Staff Connection... Parish Mission Statement George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 Dear friends, I dont know about youbut in reflecting on my 63+ years of interactions with other people, I have come to a solid conclusion: People are fickle! When others do something for us with which we agree and are happy, or when they ask us to help them do something and we want to do itwe not only recognize their authority but we also accept their authority. Howeverwhen people challenge us to a new way of thinkingor challenge us by asking something that we would have a difficult time do- ing for them, we often ask them but what authority do they speak?Actually, we usually say some- thing like who do you think you areasking me such a thing! How dare you!At face value, our Gospel this weekend sounds like a miracle story about an exorcismJesus expels the unclean spirit that has possessed a man. However, upon closer examination of this gospel perico- pe, the central issue is one of authorityJesus teaching as one who has (had) authority instead of the scribes! And in response to this exorcism, the people were in awewondering aloud… “What is this?A new teaching with authority? And so Jesus, clearly, amazed the people. Upon expelling that unclean spirit, He spoke with a calm gentle strength that revealed an inner authority. The people thought that maybe he was the prophet about whom Moses spoke”… for they knew that God would raise up this prophet from among their own kin. We, two thousand + years later, have the benefit of hindsight! Those who resonated with Jesus responded to Him with open, softened hearts. Those who did not agree with His words or deeds tested Him while they hardened their hearts. All in all though, the gentle strength of Jesusauthority manifested peace in the midst of turmoil. People came to know God in new ways and to live their faith in ways that now seemed normal, even though they once seemed very foreign indeed. Youve all seen, Im pretty sure, the signs Keep Calm and…” I tried in early January to live up to the sign I received on Facebook Keep Calm and Go Bills! That, for sure, didnt workbut the sentiment almost always does work! Our readings this weekend could be a source for a complete new line of signs with spiritual wisdom: Keep Calm and Turn to Jesus.Keep Calm and Make Christ your Center.Keep Calm and Live with Gentle Strength.Keep Calm and Let God Sur- prise You.And perhaps my favorite, and it fits in so nicely with our Responsorial Psalm this week- endKeep Calm and Harden Not Your Hearts! For if today, dear friends, we hear Gods voice, clearly and loudly, or dimly with a slight poke in our side, we too will react with an authority that has been presented to us from God alone! Blessings, Deacon Hurley Sacraments Baptism: A preparaon session is required before the bapsm of your child. Please call 273-6121 prior to your due date for an appointment. A teacher was talking to her class about whales The teacher was asked if whales could eat humans The teacher said it was physically impossible for whales to swallow humans because even though the whale is very large the throat is small and narrow One little girl raised her hand and said ldquowhat about Jonah He was swallowed by a whalerdquo The teacher stated again that it was totally impossible The little girl said to the teacher ldquowell when I get to heaven then I will ask Jonahrdquo The teacher said ldquowhat if Jonah is in hellrdquo The little girl replied ldquowell then you can ask himrdquo Rich Rasmussen Youth and Pastoral Minister Immaculate Conception Church Ithaca NY

Share the Journey-Stand with Immigrants Jesusrsquo word in the Gospel of Mark has the power to heal Jesus speaks in the synagogue and casts out an unclean spirit Those who are present react with amazement Later this becomes a cause of division among the people As a nation we suffer many divi-sions including opinions about who we will accept as legal resi-dents of our country The DREAM Act has strong bi-partisan support because those who are eligible have already fulfilled cer-tain conditions They have been educated in our schools and earned a college degree or its equivalent in a two-year training program or have served honorably in our military Persons who qualify got through a step by step process including eight years of conditional residence We are standing with the US Catholic Bishops in asking Congress to pass this Act Please call your Rep-resentative at (202) 224-3121
