Since the early 1980s, the Belgium native has been responsible for pioneering and frequently transdisciplinary exhibitions, and he has held leading positions at international exhibition venues since the late 1980s. He served as programme director at the contemporary art institution MoMA PS1 in New York beginning in 1988, he became director of Rotterdam’s Witte de With Center of Contemporary Art in 1990, and 1996 saw him assume directorship of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. From 2003 to 2011, he led Munich’s Haus der Kunst, the contemporary art focus of which he expanded by architecture, design, fashion, film, and photography. 2017 will see Chris Dercon succeed Frank Castorf as artistic director of the theatre Volksbühne Berlin. Lilli Hollein is director and co-founder of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. She holds a degree in Industrial Design from the University of Applied Arts Vienna and has worked as a curator, journalist, architecture and design critic since 1996. She has been published widely in daily newspapers and magazines at home and abroad and acted as commissioner of the Austrian contribution for the Sao Paulo Architecture Biennial 2007. She is a seeked lecturer and jury member on several boards and institutions in the fields of architecture, design and art in public space. VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, that she founded together wit Tulga Beyerle and Thomas Geisler in 2007 has become Austrias most important event for creative industries with more than 36.000 visitors each year. Vienna native Amelie Klein (née Znidaric) has worked at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany since August 2011. She most recently curated Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design, which opened at the Vitra Design Museum in March 2015 and then went on tour with stops including the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. Klein studied design criticism at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Before that, she had worked as a journalist for publications including the Viennese daily Die Presse, the magazines Metropolis and Abitare, and the online media Domus and Stylepark – from which standpoint she observed the birth and growth of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK from the very beginning.
