Stadsskogen – a rendezvous area.
WELCOME TO THE NATURE RESERVE
STADSSKOGEN
Stadsskogen, The City Forest, lives up to its name. The forest is both a source of wonderful experiences and a livingspace for animals and plants. Cultural traces are also to be found. Enter the forest and you will soon be leaving the city-feeling behind.
Stadsskogen was protected as a nature reserve in 2005. It has an area of 108 hec-tare and lies edge to edge with the larger Hågadalen-Nåsten nature reserve.

TEXTS ON THE INFORMATION BOLLARDS
The bollards are marked on the map with numbers corresponding to those below.
The largest spruce
This is the largest spruce in the City Forest. Go up to it, look up into its crown, and try to put your arms around it! It is 36 m tall and has the circumference of 370 cm at breast height.Just behind the tree there are some flat stones – the remains of an old farm cottage.
The larches
The little larches originate from the large ones you can see some way off in the woods. Larches are the only conifers that shed all their needles in the autumn. The needles turn yel-low, which makes it easy to find the larches. In spring, the new needles are a delicate, pale green.
The largest pine
This is the largest pine in the City Forest. It is 28 m tall, and about 200 years old. When this tree was a seedling at the end of the 1700s, the forest was very sparse, because of the intense felling and grazing. Uppsala city already ow-ned the forest at that time. It was then outside the built-up area, which ended at Kyrkogårds-gatan.
The Bird Ponds
These ponds are the remains of the many stone quarries that used to exist in the forest. Today, most of them are filled with soil or water. Quarrying ceased in the early 1900s. This place usedtobecalled‘TheBethelPonds’,fromthename of the chapel that formerly stood there. The ponds are only about a metre deep. Can you see the carp that live there?
The beech grove
These are the only beech trees in the forest. The old ones were planted in the 1930s. Beech does not grow wild in Uppland, but as you can see from the young trees, it does regenerate from sees. Beech is easy to recognise because of its very pointed buds and characteristics nuts. Enjoy its special beauty in the spring!
‘Löfgren s plain’
In the 1800s, the area around here was cul-tivated. Old ditches within the present forest remain from that time. We do not know who ‘Löfgren’was,butonamapfrom1850, the areaismarked‘Löfgren´sfarmland’.
The Hazel grove
Hazels generally grow like those here, in clumps, in rich, former farmland. Before the hazels come into leaf in spring, the ground is covered with wood anemones. Hazelnuts are very attractive as food for squirrels, nuthatches and nutcrackers. Why not taste a few yourself?
The grove of ‘noble’ broadleaved trees
Severalofthe‘noble’(so-calledbecauseofthere usefulness) broadleaved trees can be seen here: elm, linden, ash and maple. Other broadleaved trees, such as bird cherry, birch, mountain ash and elder, can also be seen. This vegetation reveals that the soil is rich in nutrients and has enough water to support a demanding flora. Therefore, it was also good for farming.
The marsh
This is the largest fen in the City Forest. Many alder trees grow here. Another typical plant is the horsetail. Feel its dark green stems: they contain silica, which makes them hard and rough on the surface. Linnæus wrote of the plant: ‘Craftsmen polish with this brass, horn and iron as well as wood’Tryityourself!
The Troll’s Forest
Not a tree has been felled in this area since 1970. The forest is allowed to develop on its own, towards a natural forest. Dead trees are left to fall and decay slowly, which makes them favourites with many insects, woodpeckers and playing children!
The shooting range
The three stone walls are the remains of an old rifle range, used by the military. Firing took place from the Rosendal fields, east of the forest, which gave rise to its name, the ‘600-metrewalls’.Therangewasinuseuptothe 1920s.
The Bethel Chapel
You are standing beside the foundation of the Bethel Chapel, in use during the first half of the 20th Century. It belonged to the Baptist congregation, but was also used for other activities, e.g. by the temperance movement and the Salvation Army. It was demolished in 1957.
Valltjärn
In the City Forest There are several water-filled pits, the remains of quarries. The Uppland gra-nite was formerly quarried for use in the foun-dations, walls, bridges, and docks. Quarrying ceased in 1916. This pool is such an open, water-filled stonepit, which has also served as a bathing-place.
