The STACKThe Stack 4-4 is our base formation. It protects our linebackers from offensive linemen, and shifts quickly

into our two other formations. Correct alignment is required on every down.

The SPLITThe Split 4-4 is a variant of our base formation. The OLBs shift over and align on the outside shoulder of

the tight end position. They also take a half step closer to the LOS.We may use the split against double tightend formations. It is easier for wings/split ends to crack the OLBs and get to the outside, so we use it withcaution.

The HAMMERThe Hammer 6-2 is the last variant on our base formation. OLBs move to the LOS and become Defensive

Ends. They align outside the tight end positions in a 3 point stance. They must box EVERY TIME -penetrate as deep as the deepest back, THEN turn in to pursue. It is to defend the sweep and reverse. If theends do not box, then it is weak against the sweep.

Green Defens ive Cal lThere are two defensive color calls: Green and Red. A color is called on every down. On a Green call, the

linemen GO through the assigned gap to get the ball carrier, trying to tackle him in less than two seconds. The linemen must get to the ball carrier no matter what. This is all out pressure on the QB and RBs.

Red Defensive Cal lThere are two defensive calls: Green and Red. A color will be called on every down. On a Red call, the

linemen fire into the assigned gap, control the offensive linemen, STOP, and read the offensive backfield. The linemen must fight hard to keep their positions. They must Stay at Hometo deny cut backs, counters, and reverses. They pursue the ball carrier if he moves toward their immediate area. Called as a changeup toour Green call.

Play Cal l ingThe defense take their positions in the 4-4 Stack as the Offense approaches the line of scrimmage. As the

offensive linemen move to take their positions, the defensive coordinator calls the play. The defensive callwill be a defensive assignment or a stunt call. The defense immediately shifts to the proper formation andattack as called.

Gap Cal lsWe use five basic gap calls, and three line stunts. These gap calls tell the linemen which gap they should

use to get in the offensive backfield.

Stunt : Gor i l laIn the Gorilla stunt, the Guards flex --- they line up a step back from the LOS. At the snap, the Tackles

drive fast into the Offensive Guards, knocking them down on their way into the backfield. The OffensiveTackles are trained to block them so they follow them. The Defensive Guards fire low and fast behind theirTackles into the C gaps, where no one is there to block, and look for the quick tackle of the ball carrier.

The free safety caps the play, watching for cutbacks as well. They work together as atriangle, mirroring the ball carrier, closing the triangle until they are close enough to tackle.

If there is a lead blocker, the nearest ILB plays sniper. He jams the lead block out of the play so the triangle can work. If the assassin cannot reachthe lead block and has no angle on the running back, he runs for the top of the triangle; the safety will be working outside contain if the corner getsblocked out of the play. The remaining ILB shifts to a middle linebacker position, slightly deeper, to provide better cutback coverage. The remaining LBers and secondary stay at home to protect against counters and reverses. As the sweep develops, they take deeper fade steps toallow good angles of pursuit once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage.
