STAAD.Pro is a widely used software for structural analysis and design from ResearchEngineers International. It is simple to use and user friendly. No prior knowledge of the
language of the program is necessary to get started.
The STAAD.Pro software consists of the following:
The STAAD.Pro Graphical User Interface (GUI): It is used to generate the model, which can then be analyzed using the STAAD engine. After analysis and design is
completed, the GUI can also be used to view the results graphically.
The STAAD Analysis and Design engine: It is a general purpose calculationengine for structural analysis and integrated steel, concrete, timber and aluminiumdesign.
The objective of this manual is to familiarize the user with the basic principals involved
in the implementation of the various analysis / design facilities offered by the STAADengine. As a general rule, the sequence in which the facilities are discussed follows the
recommended sequence of their usage in the input file.
Input GeneratorThe user communicates with STAAD through an input file. The input file is a text fileconsisting of a series of commands which are executed sequentially.
Types of StructuresA structure can be defined as an assemblage of elements. STAAD is capable of
analyzing and designing structures consisting of both frame, plate/shell and solid
elements.
Unit SystemsThe user is allowed to input data and request output in almost all commonly used
engineering unit systems including MKS, SI, and FPS.
Structure Geometry and Coordinate SystemsA structure is an assembly of individual components such as beams, columns, slabs,
plates etc. In STAAD, frame elements and plate elements may be used to model thestructural components.
- Global Coordinate SystemThe following coordinate systems are available for specification of the
structure geometry.
- Conventional Cartesian Coordinate System- Cylindrical Coordinate System- Reverse Cylindrical Coordinate System
- Local Coordinate SystemA local coordinate system is associated with each member.

Finite Element InformationSTAAD is equipped with a state of the art plate/shell and solid finite element.
Member PropertiesThe following types of member property specifications are available in STAAD:
- PRISMATIC property specifications- Standard steel shapes from built- in section library- User created steel tables- TAPERED sections- Through ASSIGN command
Member / Element ReleaseSTAAD allows releases for both members and elements
Truss / Tension / CompressionIn STAAD, the MEMBER TENSION or MEMBER COMPRESSION command can
be used to limit the load direction the member may carry
Tension / Compression only SpringsIn STAAD, the SPRING TENSION or SPRING COMPRESSION command can beused to limit the load direction the support spring may carry.
Cable MembersCable members may be specified by using the MEMBER CABLE command.
Member OffsetsSome members of a structure may not be concurrent with the incident joints therebycreating offsets. This offset distance is specified in terms of global or local coordinatesystem.
Material ConstantsThe material constants are: modulus of elasticity (E); weight density (DEN);
poissons ratio (POISS); co-efficient of thermal expansion (ALPHA); compositedamping ratio; and beta angle (BETA).

SupportsSTAAD allows specifications of supports that are parallel as well as inclined to theglobal axes.
Master / Slave JointsThe master / slave option is provided to enable the user to model rigid links in thestructural system.
LoadsLoads in a structure can be specified as joint load, member load, temperature load and
fixed end member load
Load GeneratorSTAAD is equipped with built in algorithms to generate moving loads and lateral
seismic loads on a structure.
Analysis FacilitiesThe following PERFORM ANALYSIS facilities are available in STAAD- Stiffness analysis / Linear static analysis- Second order static analysis- Dynamic analysis
Member End ForcesMember end forces and moments in the member result from loads applied to thestructure. These forces are in the local member coordinate system.
Multiple AnalysesStructural analysis / design may require multiple analyses in the same run. STAAD
allows the user to change input such as member properties, support conditions etc. inan input file to facilitate multiple analyses in the same run.
Steel / Concrete / Timber DesignExtensive design capabilities are available in STAAD for steel, concrete and timbersections.

Footing DesignA footing design facility capable of designing individual footings for user specifiedsupports is available.
Printing FacilitiesAll input data and output may be printed using PRINT command available inSTAAD.
Miscellaneous FacilitiesSTAAD offers the following miscellaneous facilities for problem solution:
- Perform rotation : After the geometry has been specified, this command can beused to rotate the structure shape through any desired angle about any global axis.
- Substitute: Joint and member numbers may be redefined in STAAD through theuse of the SUBSTITUTE command.
- Calculation of Centre of Gravity: STAAD is capable of calculating the centre ofgravity of the structure.
STAAD.Pro screen has five major elements as discussed below:
Menu bar: Located at the top of the screen, the Menu bargives access to all thefacilities of STAAD.Pro.
Toolbar: The dockable Toolbargives access to the most frequently used commands. Main Window: This is the largest area at the centre of the screen, where the model
and the results are displayed.
Page Control: The Page Control is a set of tabs that appear to the left of the MainWindow.
Data Area: The right part of the screen is called the Data Area, where differentdialog boxes, tables, list boxes, etc. appear depending on the type of operation one isperforming.

The basic steps involved in modelling, analyzing and designing a structure are:
Starting the program
Click on STAAD-Pro icon from the STAAD-Pro 2006 program.
Creating a new structure This Dialog box will appear
every time we start the program
The structure type is to bedefined appropriately by
choosing one among Space,Plane, Floor & Truss
The units for force & Lengthhas to be chosen. The units canbe changed later at any stage of
the modeling if necessary
We have to provide filename &path (location)
After specifying these click onthe Next button

Creating joints and members
Select the tools to be used to initially construct the model. Add Beam, Add Plate
or Add Solid are the starting points for constructing Beams, Plates or Solids. OpenStructure Wizard provides access to library of structural templates. These options
are also available in the menus of GUI. After selecting one of the above, Click onFinish.

EXAMPLES AND EXERCISES
The various structures that are commonly adopted in our day to day analysis and design
are trusses, plane frames, grids and space frames. The various loadings are dead loads,
imposed loads, wind loads and seismic loads. In the following examples and exercises
the above structures along with the various load cases and their combinations have been
dealt with.
