RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (often
abbreviated RCIA) is the process through which interested adults
and older children are gradually introduced to the Roman Catholic
faith and way of life. The RCIA is a communal process and
involves a number of stages punctuated by liturgical rites to aid
and assist the potential convert toward the final rite, usually at the
Easter Vigil at which time they will become full members of the
Catholic Church. If you or someone you know is interested in
receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and/or
Eucharist, or if you have been away from the faith for a while and
would like to come back and learn more about it, please call Fr.
Matt at the rectory (739-4779) or speak with him after Mass.
The Christmas season is once again upon us, and
along with it comes the Parish Giving Tree. Many
needy families in West Springfield have been
helped by your generous donations.
Our Parish Giving Tree will have tags for boys and girls, teens, as
well as the elderly and families. The younger boys and girls love
toys, and can also use hats, mittens, gloves and scarves. The
older children also like items that are sports themed. The elderly
can use gift cards to grocery stores as well as restaurants. Many
residents of West Springfield can use a helping hand.
Fast food restaurant gift cards are helpful to the Parish Cupboard.
They are used to feed the homeless on the weekend when the
Parish Cupboard is not open. Gift cards should be returned by
way of the collection basket during Mass.
The Parish Giving Tree has begun and will continue until the
weekend of December 5 and 6. Please place unwrapped gifts
under the Christmas tree.
Thank you, once again, for the generosity shown by all
parishioners to help make the Christmas season a little brighter
for our neighbors in West Springfield!
If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mary Flaherty at
734-6785.
Parish Offertory Gift—November 14/15 $10,674
Thank you for your support.
My Dear Friends in Christ,
The release of the movie “Spotlight” has brought renewed
attention to the painful experience of child abuse which occurred
within our faith community. Although the movie highlights
events in Boston, we know that every diocese, including our own,
was impacted by this crisis and the violation of trust which lies at
its center. I want to take this opportunity to reiterate how deeply
sorry I am for the past failure of our Church to protect young
people, I want to apologize personally to all victims of abuse and
their family, friends and loved ones, and to assure you that we
continue to pray for you and ask for forgiveness.
At the same time, I want to re-commit the diocese to taking all
necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our
young people, those entrusted to our care and ministry. I also
want to urge in the strongest manner that if you know of some-
one, whom you have good reason to suspect may be the victim of
abuse, to report it immediately to local law enforcement officials.
If this is taking place within our faith community, I also ask that
you call the diocesan confidential Abuse Reporting Hotline toll
free number at 800-842-9055.

ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE SCHOOL NEWS
STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE
On Thursday, October 29, our 7th and 8th graders traveled to the MassMutual Center in Springfield to
participate in the 10th annual largest one-day Stock Market competition in the country. This event, sponsored by Junior Achievement of Western Mass., is a large-scale interactive game that is a great way for students to demonstrate the basics of how the stock market works. This exciting event demonstrates to students the role that mathematics plays in daily life. It offers a number of other experiences that help show the link between classroom curriculum and reality. Our students prepare and compete in the event while learning valuable life lessons along the way. Each year our students are excited to compete in an event that approaches learning in a fun, hands-on, team oriented manner. St. Thomas the Apostle School brought forty students to the Stock Market Challenge this year. Our 7th and 8th grade students, dressed in their Wall Street professional attire, competed among approximately six hundred high school students in the event. Throughout the challenge, our students showed their ability to compete in this older division and did extremely well. As our nine teams worked together discussing the strategy of buying and selling stocks, the excitement of the event increased as our teams climbed up the leaderboard. Knowledge, quick calculations, hunches, and watching the news screen for national and world events became the strategy and work of each team. When the final bell rang and all trading ended, St. Thomas students were happy to see all nine teams place very well in the final rankings. One team in particular placed 3rd in this year’s competition and were recognized for their accomplishment at the end of the event. A trophy was presented to team “Golden”, four 7th graders who increased their initial $1,000,000 stock portfolio by 250%! Job well done to these young ladies and gentlemen! Congratulations to all of the 7th and 8th graders who competed in this year’s Stock Market Challenge! We look forward to competing in next year’s event. If you wish to learn more about St. Thomas the Apostle School, please visit us at www.stthomasws.org. Thank you!
NOVEMBER 22, 2015

Please join us as we learn about our belief in the three persons of the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We will spend the day immersed in our God, learning, sharing, and growing in our faith. We will learn how each person of the Trinity relates to each other and to us. We will witness to each other how they can each be a wonderful presence in our lives. Our retreat will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on December 5 at St. Mary’s High School Gym. To register or with any questions, please call Joanne Bagge at St. Mary’s Office of Religious Education, 562-5484.
Happy Thanksgiving!
CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT—During his visit to Brazil, Pope Francis said, “The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need” (World Youth Day, Address, July 25, 2013). With these words, Pope Francis continues to bring our attention back to the poor and our responsibility toward them. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) responds directly to this call by addressing the root causes of poverty in the United States. Founded in 2004, the group Ex-Prisoners and Prisoners Organizing for Community Advancement (EPOCA) works to change the future for men and women returning to society after incarceration. Since its inception, EPOCA has steadily grown in membership, influence, and vision. Today, it forms a diverse team of 226 members working with thousands of allies every day to win legislative victories that improve the lives of families around the country. EPOCA created the campaign “Jobs Not Jails,” which proposes a jobs program for low-income, high-crime neighborhoods, offering residents hope and saving two billion tax dollars that would be spent on new prisons. EPOCA also works to enhance policies that offer people a chance to rebuild their homes, finish their education, and gain marketable job skills. CCHD supports EPOCA because it fights for the dignity of every person and implements structural changes that make our community stronger for the future. This collection, which will be taken up this weekend, November 21 and 22, is the primary source of funding for CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs, like the grant that supports EPOCA. Funding from the collection offers new hope every year to those living in poverty throughout the United States. And remember, 25 percent of the collection’s proceeds stay here in our (arch) diocese to fight poverty in our community and defend the dignity of our neighbors. Help us defend human dignity and show Christ’s charity to those in need.

MESSAGE FROM DEACON JIM MARCUS
What are your spiritual Resolutions for the new liturgical year?
Many of us make New Year’s resolutions at the end of each cal-endar year. As we approach the end of our Liturgical year, let’s think of some spiritual resolutions we can make that will bring us into a deeper relationship with Jesus and strengthen our faith in God.
Some suggestions:
Set aside time each day for prayer. Evangelize—invite a friend to Mass with you Read the Bible Pick up a copy of Pope Francis’ “Joy of the Gospel” Join a Catholic study group—We have one here at St. Thomas in the Parish Center, Monday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Use the internet to connect to your faith. Possible searches are as follows: usccb.org—U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (many re-sources here) Zenit.org—The World seen from Rome (keep up with Pope Fran-cis) stthomaswestspringfield.org—(Parish and local diocesan news) dailygospel.org—(free phone app.—have the daily readings emailed to you each day—can also be done through usccb.org web site)
As we look towards Advent and the start of our new liturgical year next Sunday, let us pray and work to build a stronger rela-tionship with Jesus.
“If up till now you have kept Jesus at a distance, step forward. He will receive you with open arms.” Pope Francis
