Stewardship Message

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul makes a list of gifts dispensed to members of the Christian community by the Holy Spirit. Each gift bestowed has a specific purpose for the person for whom it is intended: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, mighty deeds, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation. Good stewards know these gifts are not meant to be kept hidden by the recipient but to be shared with the community and beyond. As we begin a new year, let us reflect on the gift the Holy Spirit has giv-en to each of us. Do we recognize this gift? How was it in-tended that we use this gift? Are we being good stewards of this gift?

RE Winter Retreat February 15 & 16

Mark your calendars for the RE Winter Retreat on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16. Our theme will be a Hawaiian Luau. Wear your Hawaiian shirt, grass skirts and flip flops for this fun colorful break from cabin fever and the cold. We will be doing activities that focus on discipleship and the apostles.

I have rescheduled the Sisterhood Drama for the retreat. Another weekend of snow has put a damper on our Peace Workshop Sunday activities. I will reschedule our speaker for the Winter Retreat.

Thank you to all of the Confirmation kids and parents who tried for two weeks to have a breakfast for us. Mother Nature must think we need to go on a diet. Our next Youth Sunday Breakfast won’t be until February 24 hosted by the freshman Confirmation class.

Due to the snow days, some activities will be rescheduled to help the catechists adjust their teaching plans. Please watch your email for updates and changes that might affect your weekend plans.

Godspeed,

Theresa

Day Of Prayer For The Legal Protection Of Unborn Children The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person com-mitted through acts of abortion.” We are joining again with Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana and Right to Life of Indianapolis for a day of prayerful witness in remem-brance of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This will take place on January 22, 2019.

The Day Events: 11:00 AM Indoor Life Rally: Indiana Convention Center 100 S. Capitol Ave Indianapolis, IN 12:00 Mass at St. John the Evangelist with Archbishop Thompson and Bishop Doherty followed by a peaceful March to the Capi-tal. 12:00 Right to Life of Indianapolis Memorial Service for the Unborn: Indiana Convention Center 100 S. Capitol Ave Indianapolis, IN 1:30pm March from Georgia Street to Soldiers and Sailors Monument to Capitol Building 2:00pm Rally at the South Steps of Indiana State House Join us for all or part of the day's activities. For more information, please email Brie Anne Varick or call 317-236-1543.

In preparation for the celebration of our 150th Anniversary of being established as a parish, we will be giving a brief history of the parish and community every week. Our his-tory will be a composite of old writings by past parishion-ers, early documents and records and newspaper articles. Our concluding celebration will be on Saturday, September 14, 2019 when Archbishop Thompson will be here for the 5:00 PM Mass and Anniversary Celebration

Our Growing Catholic Community 1916-An important factor that contributed to the growth of the early community of Fortville was their deep faith and their keen interest in the spiritual side of life. This was im-portant year for St. John’s mission parish. Father Lendger presided over a congregation of about 60 members who felt the need for a new church building. Trustees James Ganley, Lawrence Durack, P.J. Kelly and T. Tobin acted as a building committee for this project. Brother Christopher was appoint-ed construction superintendent. Frank Crouch was the build-er. It was at this time that the parish chose the name St. Thomas the Apostle (It was said that the choosing of this name was in honor of Thomas Tobin, who worked untiringly for the erection of the original church building in 1869). The brick edifice was built the help of most of the members of the parish. The men of the parish at the time were mostly farmers who donated their services and horsepower as all the hauling was done by horses and wagons. The gravel and sand was donated by john and Henry Boucher and Mary Ann Kelly. The first load of gravel was hauled by George Keller-meyer and Emmett Kelly for the foundation. The brick came from Martinsville and that too was hauled by the members from the railroad. The church was completed in October of 1916 for the cost of $4,988.33.
