A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 1:9

He saw the spirit descending and remaining on him.

Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John. No sooner had he come up out of

the water than he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit, like a dove, descending on him. And a voice came

from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’ The Gospel of the Lord.

We congratulate are newly confirmed students who had the honour of being confirmed by Bishop Terry Curtin last Sunday. We

thank them for committing to Christ in a very reflective and reverent way. I would also like to thank the staff who supported the

children and were very proud to witness their last right of Initiation in the Catholic Church.

The parish celebration of Confirmation gives the candidates strength in their faith and our parish and Church hope for the

future. Now these newly confirmed must continue to grow in the faith and guide their lives by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I ask

you to continue to pray for them that they will stay close to Christ and His Church and bear witness to the Lord in their lives. Clara Privitera Religious Education Leader

NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

St Thomas More is a hive activity not just with concert practise, but with a myriad of breaktime clubs, the Middles Coding investigations, the Grade 2 Book Writing Fair, the Grade 5 Food festival, Grade Prep Life Education Van and the Grade 6 Confirmation last Sunday.

Our St Thomas More Confirmation last weekend was a wonderful celebration of the Third Rite of Initiation, where our Grade 6 students made the Baptismal promises for themselves, initiated by Bishop Terry Curtin into the Church as young adults. This is a huge step for them as they are close to embarking into the world of young adulthood, morphing from children into teenagers and moving from Primary School to Secondary school.

Sadly, we have received many complaints from residents that live on Angus Street about STM parents parking in their driveways. It is in breach of the law to park on private property and whilst some parents may not think people are home when they do this, some have been and are quite annoyed by it. Please refrain from driving into residents’ driveways so these complaints stop. A huge congratulations to Miss Rosaria Cannizzo and her fiance Aleks Nikolovski who were engaged last weekend. We are very excited for Miss Cannizzo as she begins her wedding preparations.

There’s so much happening with Parents and Friends organising Father’s Day celebrations and a Music Trivia/Social night. Our Family Fun Day committee are also holding a fun/informal craft making morning, please come and join in the fun if you have time to spare. Hopefully, this will be the first of a few sessions to be held between now and the Family Fun Day on April 28th 2018.

And don’t forget our annual children’s book week that begins on the 21st of August and culminates with the Dress Up day on the 25th of August.

Thank you for your ongoing support Marcy De Nardis Principal

Term 3 Inquiry Focuses As always, we would like to keep you all in the loop with a snapshot of our Inquiry this term. As a school, we love having parents work with our children in the classrooms and we would like to extend an invitation to you all to help our students in inquiry this term. If you are involved in an occupation, hobby or have an interest in any of the inquiry focuses below, our students would benefit from your expertise and passion. If you feel that you could help in any way, please see or email your child's teacher or myself. Prep: For the Health of It! In term 3, our prep children will be exploring health and wellbeing. Specifically, they will investigate how we can all make ‘good’ daily choices to stay healthy physically and emotionally. They will look at healthy food choices, hygiene practices (including brushing your teeth, washing hands etc), exercising, sleeping and relaxing. The Preps will be exploring how we can improve the health of our school, as well as discussing how their families make choices to be healthy and happy at home. The major understandings that they will be exploring are:

1. We can make sensible daily choices to keep us healthy 2. We need to take care of our bodies and our minds

Year 1 / 2: Mini Engineers This term the Year 1 and 2 children are becoming ‘Mini Engineers’. They will be exploring the role of engineers in our world: in particular the software, mechanical and civil engineering. They will be investigating the process of problem solving that engineers undertake to solve the problems in our world: from traffic lights, to website design, to construction. In particular, they will explore the world of code and how our world uses code to make our lives easier and more efficient. The major understandings that they will be exploring are:

Engineers use a process to solve problems in our world Engineers design solutions to problems by using a sequence of steps and decisions

Middles: Kids who Code In term 3 the middle children will also be exploring the world of engineering, but more specifically software engineering. Software engineers harness the skill of coding to design and create products and solutions to problems in our world. They innovate to think flexibly and use their skills to develop websites, apps and various products. They will participate in a research project that investigates the potential of coding and the possibilities of its application in our world.

Coding is the way we command and communicate with machines

Page 3: St THOMAs MoRE - St Edwards Term 3 Week 4 2017.pdfSt Thomas More is a hive activity not just with concert practise, but with a myriad of breaktime clubs, the Middles Coding investigations,

Coding and programming is an incredible skill that engages both our creative and our problem solving sides.

Code exists everywhere in our world and helps create simple solutions to everyday problems

*Please note: if you have any working technology that you do not use anymore, we would really appreciate donations to the school. The children will use this technology to investigate how it works, systems and circuits. Year 5 / 6 : What’s Growing On Next term, the grade 5 & 6 students are participating in an inquiry, focusing on the stage of life surrounding puberty. Throughout this unit the students will investigate the social, emotional and physical changes that occur during puberty. They will explore how stereotypes are generated by the media and how this affects young peoples’ perceptions of themselves and their identity. They will also examine cyber safety and peer pressure and how this is linked to the social, emotional and physical changes that take place during puberty. They will identify positive strategies to deal with these changes and become more aware of the need to be sensitive and show respect to others during puberty. This unit will focus on three key understandings:

We experience social, emotional and physical changes during puberty There are many influences on the development of one's identity There are many ways we can deal with changes during puberty and we need to respect both ourselves

and others during this time.

Parents as experts We warmly welcome our parent community to come and share their expertise and experience with our children. If you work in any areas that lends itself to the above inquiry units, then please feel free to contact myself or any teacher in that year level. You may also have a keen interest, hobby or general interest, and would like to help in any way, we also encourage you to get in touch with us. Vocations that we are looking for include: Prep: Doctor, nurse, fitness instructor, personal trainer, dentist, nutritionist, chef Year 1 / 2: Engineer of any description, IT technician, web designer, computer programmer Middles: IT technician, web designer, computer programmer Year 5/ 6: Doctor, nurse, anyone working in the media We look forward to sharing the students’ learning journey with you via See Saw throughout the term! Best Wishes Kate Korber - Learning & Teaching Leader

The Woolworths Earn & Learn program is back!

We are excited to be taking part in the 2017 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Thanks to you, during the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned. The more points we earn, the more opportunity to redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources across all curriculum areas including Maths, English, Science and art & crafts materials from Modern Teaching Aides.

From now until September 19th 2017, anyone from our school community – staff, parents, grandparents, neighbours and

friends who shop at Woolworths can collect stickers for our children that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker card. Completed sticker sheets can be returned

to school and placed in the Woolworths collection box. Thanking you for your ongoing support!

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATION DAY Each year, Australian Schools celebrate Book Week - run by the Children's Book Council of Australia. In it's 72nd year, this annual event calls for schools and families to celebrate a love of reading and focuses on raising awareness of accomplished authors and illustrators via their national awards.

Each year during Book Week, our children read the nominated picture books of the year. Book Week culminates in a celebration day where our entire school community dresses up and participates in a parade, as well as participating in fun events and a school wide quiz. This celebration day will be held on Friday 25th August and we welcome all to attend.

This year, the theme is 'Escape to Everywhere'. We encourage everyone to come dressed up as something from their favourite story!

We do not want anyone spending money on new costumes, there are many ideas that can be created with things around the house. Awards for the most creative costumes will be given in each year level at the parade, held in our hall at 9.30am.

Your child is set to have a wonderfully fun day exploring a love of reading and the wonderful world of books. If you have any questions, please feel free to see your child's teacher or Mary Turville, in the library. For more information about book week, please visit their website: http://cbca.org.au/bwactivities.htm

BY MICHAEL GROSE

If boys don’t have the processes needed for independence, they will always

be dependent on others regardless of their ability and skills.

If you want kids to become independent you need to teach them skills so they can become self-sufficient.

Dressing yourself, making a snack, looking up a bus time table and making a CV are

examples of self-sufficiency skills that are relevant for different ages.

Awareness, teaching and opportunity are the main requirements for kids to pick up

these skills. They need to be aware of what can be done. They need to acquire the skills

– some take more teaching than others. They also need the opportunity to put things into practice.

Choose any skill you want your son to learn and see how each of these applies.

But there is a deeper level you can go to develop independence. You can help your kids develop processes necessary to become independent. If they don’t have the processes

needed for independence, they will always be dependent on others regardless of their ability and skills.

Here are three processes of independence you can develop:

Planning ahead: Thinking ahead is needed for real independence. What are the three things you need to get ready for school? What do you need to do to complete your

homework in time for the weekend? Help kids to develop processes for planning their time and thinking ahead so they can become pro-active and accountable. Otherwise kids become reliant on others.

Procedural thinking: The trouble with everything being instant and off-the-shelf is that kids don’t see steps and procedures required to make, bake or do anything. It also means

kids don’t develop procedural self-talk (‘that comes first, when I’ve done that now I need to do this’) because they haven’t been exposed to sorting, sequencing and other steps that are required to make stuff happen.

Self-organisation: The ability to organize yourself is paramount to real independence from others. Forgetful kids usually don’t have a process for remembering. My adult son

came to stay recently and put his car keys in the refrigerator on the top of his 6 pack of beer that he wanted to take with him.He has a process for remembering! You guessed it.

He didn’t leave the beer behind! I checked.

Think process as well as skill if you want your kids to become truly independent. Kids will most likely copy a great deal of good organisational processes from you. But you

may also need to do some direct teaching, particularly with boys who by nature can be organisationally-challenged!
