St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church
December 17, 2017
The violet vestments worn by the priest in the season of Advent indicate a penitential spirit as the church prepares for the glorious celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As the great feast approaches, the spirit of joy and thanksgiving overtakes the sense of penance. The liturgy today is enhanced with joy and celebration. The violet vestments give way to rose vestments. The third Sunday of Advent came to be known as Gaudate Sunday. Although we may not use the Latin term, the liturgy challenges us to rejoice and celebrate. First reading from Isaiah is a song of joy. The joy is the result of God’s love and care for the human family. God’s love brings freedom, justice and peace to all, especially in the poor, the suffering and the forgotten ones. In the second reading, in the letter to the Thessalonians, we hear Rejoice always, pray without ceasing. In the Gospel we hear the reason for rejoicing. Our Savior is about to be born. John’s gospel gives us an account of the mission of John the Baptist. John the Baptist clearly understands that his role is to prepare the way for Christ. He explains to the authorities that he came to announce the coming of the Messiah, the redeemer who will bring salvation to all. The time is now to prepare, to repent of sin, to embrace justice and to live in faith, hope and love for all people. Christmas will soon be here. Don’t miss the true meaning of all the festivities. Take time to rejoice.
