Welcome as we enter the New Year in worship and song. Welcome each and everyone who has joined with us today, and if you are a visitor we are happy to say yet another welcome! Please stay after the service for a cuppa and let us get to know one another better.

We emerge from our Christmas break to find ourselves in the season of Epiphany, a word used to describe a moment of insight or revelation in which things become clear.

I love the expressiveness of the ‘Flick’ electricity advertisement when one sees the slow motion change of facial expression as it dawns on someone that they’re paying too much for their electricity. I think that the disciples had many such ‘epiphanies’ as they linked up with Jesus and discovered that the ‘religious faith’ they had always accepted and, in some ways, had become resigned to, was far different in Jesus’ worldview! Until then they had simply ‘gone with the flow’, but Jesus called them to let go of the safety of their nets and taste the, previously hidden, real realm of God.

Jonah too was caught up in his religious stereotypes. For him the Ninevites (Assyrians) were his mortal enemies and he could not conceive of a faith that would ask him to see it any other way. God’s act of grace towards them caused him such anger that he longed for death!

Are we caught in longing for ‘the good old days’, perhaps when we thought we had all the answers or when our faith made no demands on us. Are we open to new insights and understandings – even if they lead to a degree of insecurity and pose a challenge to the way we live our daily life?
