ST. RITA SCHOOL

Where Faith and Knowledge Meet!

SRS STRONG!

+ There are only a few short weeks left of school for St. Rita School’s students, faculty, and staff. The last day of online learning will be Friday, June 12. With Zoom classroom meetings, pictures of school work sent to teachers to assess, projects, online presentations, and perhaps a few late assignments being turned in, students and some teachers as well will be counting down to the final day of distance learning. However, the fun will continue for one more week as the teachers and students celebrate SRS Strong until June 19 which will be the official final day of school for the students.

+ With the last few weeks of school fast approaching, there are alternative plans being made for some of St. Rita School’s year-end traditions. Principal Mary Ellen Wagner, SRS faculty, and some members of PAC have been working hard to come up with special celebrations for our SRS God Drops, especially our Fifth Graders who will be moving onto Middle School and going separate ways next school year. Some of the events that will be reorganized this year are: the Moving Up Liturgy, Godspeed, and Blue and Gold Day celebrations. Unfortunately, there are some traditions that cannot be replaced like the Departing Family Breakfast, Fifth Grade trip to SeaBreeze, and the tug of war contest for all grades, alumni, and Fifth Grade parents at Blue and Gold Day. Please continue to pray for our students, faculty, and staff these final weeks of the 2019-2020 school year.

Our Tabernacle Light will burn from June 1 to June 7

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Social Trust and Pentecost

Social Trust, in a nutshell, is a society that simply trusts each other to do the right things. It is a measure of people’s belief in the honesty, fairness and good intentions of another party. The theory of Social Trust and its influence upon a society has been around for centuries. I am by no means a philosopher or a great thinker, but our current state does have me thinking deeper about what it means to have a trusting society.

Catholics have a high degree of Social Trust, believing that everyone wants to do what is right and fair for others. I believe that because, as individuals and as a society, that is what we are called to do - take care of those in need; loving our neighbors. Consider this, we are all children of God and what God makes is good! There is an inherent goodness in all of creation, in all of us. God doesn’t create distrust, cynicism, selfishness or malevolence. Consider also, that God trusts us, just like we trust God. We trust God because He has repeatedly shown His love for us. He makes himself known to us in dark times, in unexpected times, in nature, in new birth and a plethora of other times throughout our days. We trust His promise of salvation because He sent His Son who died for our sins. And today, on Pentecost, we can rest with the assurance of The Holy Spirit journeying with us for the life we are now living.

So you may now be asking why God trusts us. Haven’t we failed repeatedly over time? Well yes, and He forgives us. But we have also acted in beautiful, self-giving ways . . . revealing our inherent goodness. God made us, so He knows the Goodness, the GREATNESS, we are all capable of. Think of the Saints, the hospitals and schools the Catholic Church supports and runs, the work of Catholic Charities and Catholic Relief Services. Think of all this parish has done during this pandemic to help and stay connected with those who are suffering.

That it is why Social Trust is an important topic in today’s pandemic world. We need to trust each other to do the right things in order to stop the spread of this disease. We need to trust the science. We need leaders with the humility and vision to learn from the past in order to create an even brighter future for the next generations.

Therefore, trusting in The Holy Spirit, let us pray for the suppression of a world of suspicion, distrust and cynicism for we KNOW the goodness that dwells inside of us; that goodness that God planted in us to grow and to be set free in our world. Amen.

Pentecost Sunday

In the hope that you will enter more fully into the Mass!

“As The Father Has Sent Me, So I Send You”

T his is the celebration of Pentecost. It commemorates the decent of the Holy Spirit upon

the disciples of Jesus. 'Pentecost' is a Greek word meaning 'fiftieth”. In Judaism, the

Festival of Weeks (Shavu’ot) was celebrated seven weeks and one day after the

Passover. It commemorated the day the first fruits of the harvest were brought to the

temple. It also commemorated the day God gave the Torah to the people of Israel. Pentecost

Sunday is often referred to as the birthday of the Church - the day when we Christians

became Church. It is the day the Holy Spirit imparted the grace, the wisdom and the courage

to spread the word of the risen Christ throughout the world.

Our First reading (Acts 2:1-11) tells this story vividly. Fifty days after Jesus' Passover supper, the disciples were celebrating

the harvest festival of Pentecost. Suddenly, the promised Advocate descended upon them and enlightened and

emboldened them. No longer would they cower in fear in the upper room.

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky

a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them

tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a

large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were

astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each

of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea

and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as

travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own

tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

In our Epistle reading (1 Corinthians 12:3, 12-13), St. Paul explains the many different spiritual gifts and forms of service that

come from the same Holy Spirit. Each of us are called in some unique way by the Spirit to do God’s will.

Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual

gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the

same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some

benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also

Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we

were all given to drink of one Spirit.

In our Gospel reading (John 20:19-23) Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit into the Apostles and sent them out into the world to

be his peace and to forgive sins. This Sacrament of Reconciliation is Jesus' gift directly to us. Our priests act as direct

representatives of Jesus when they hear our confession and give us absolution for our sins.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the

Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed

them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with

you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,

“Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

T his Advocate, the Holy Spirit came just as Jesus had promised. It was an earthshaking event that changed the

world. This "Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father and the Son" lives and remains active in our world today.

This is our prayer today and always, "Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of

your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth.”
