Old Palm will be burned to provide Ashes for

Ash Wednesday, which is February 26, 2020.

Please bring your old Palm to Church by the

weekend of February 22/23. You can place

them in the box on the table in the back of the Church.

Ash Wednesday - February 26, 2020 6:00 p.m. Mass at St. Raymond Church.

People are not property. We cannot exchange them

at will or simply use them for our own designs and

purposes. What does the word “commitment” mean to

you? We can begin to understand its meaning by looking

at some synonyms: dedication, devotion, allegiance,

loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity, and bond. Commitment

is primarily about relationship, and Jesus is all about

relationships. How our lives affect others, how we treat

our brothers and sisters, how we resolve conflict, and

how we view the vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings

on obeying the commandments, murder, reconciliation,

marriage, divorce, and adultery all stem from the sacred-

ness of commitment. All of this has a God connection.

We can easily see one another as interchangeable and

dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way. What

works today may not be what I want tomorrow. We

search and search for the right thing only to find our

hearts still restless in the end. Is real happiness achievable

this side of the grave? Sometimes we expect too much

out of others and want our relationships to fill a hole that

we must figure out how to fill ourselves. Any seasoned

married couple will tell you that their love for one another

changes as time passes. Even though the understanding

of romance changes as life changes, the dedication,

devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, and fidelity all

remain and even deepen.

Some relationships can be hurtful, and God does not

want us to live with abuse or pain. Also, how a relation-

ship develops is sometimes out of our control, and we

become the victim of someone else’s decision. But we

can’t be self-focused in our relationships and see them

exclusively as self-fulfilling ends. We are companions on

life’s journey with varying depths of relationships being

enjoyed by all who are with us along the way. We have

the freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely, with

right judgment and thinking.

BIBLE St. Ephraem the Deacon, a spiritual writer who lived in

the Mideast about 350 AD, offers some advice when

reading the Bible. He cautions us not to shrink away

because we find it either too simple or too complex. He

writes that “whenever anyone discovers some part of the

treasure, he should not think that he has exhausted God’s

word nor say that the word is sterile or simple because

this portion was all he happened to find. Be thankful for

what you have received, and do not be saddened that an

abundance still remains. What you have received and

attained is your present share, while what is left will be

your heritage. So do not foolishly try to drain in one

draught what cannot be consumed all at once, and do not

cease out of faintheartedness from what you will be able

to absorb as time goes on.

NEW EVANGELIZATION According to Pope Paul VI, in his 1975 Exhortation

“On Evangelization in the Modern World, Evangelii

Nuntiandi”, our efforts at evangelization should be

directed primarily toward “those who have never heard

the Good News of Jesus” and those “who practice non-

Christian religions.” But we should also focus our

attention on non-believers, and even seek to “make even

more mature the faith of those who are already called the

faithful or believers” (##52~56). To all evangelizers he

offers the following guidelines: “that they seek their

nourishment in the Word of God and do not allow

themselves to be ensnared by political polarization; that

they avoid a hypercritical attitude; that they remain firmly

attached to the local. . .and to the universal Church; that

they maintain a sincere communion with the pastors;

that they never look on themselves as the sole agents

of evangelization; that they constantly grow in fervor,

commitment and zeal” (#58).

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Although the popular concept of a church is the

building in which believers worship, the biblical and

catechetical meaning of “Church” is the “Assembly of

God” or the believers or the worshipping community

itself. Thus, St. Paul addresses his letters to the Church

(People of God) at Rome, Corinth, etc. The Catechism

of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that there are four

“marks” or distinguishing characteristics of the Church,

“which in the Creed we profess to be one, holy, catholic

and apostolic. The Church does not possess [these marks]

of herself; it is Christ who, through the Holy Spirit, makes

his Church [such]” (#811). These marks are the qualities

and attitudes that we must develop in ourselves: seek

similarities not differences, confess our sins, learn and

live the Creed, and study the teachings and participate in

the liturgy that has come to us from the Apostles through

history and tradition.
