"Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The
train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest
public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us
curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and
the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in
today's Gospel.
The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two
missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories,
he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come
away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."
Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager
crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the
needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd,
"His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were
like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over.
"He began to teach them many things."
For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-
needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly,
perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been
feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsider-
ate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a
lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of
Christ's
life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles,
his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special
affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of
the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the
world"
(On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to
teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern
for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over
personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're
lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus.
When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do
you respond?

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
According to the Law of the Church, no one who has committed a serious sin may receive Holy Communion without
first receiving absolution for that sin in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. To promote a holy spiritual life, the Church
recommends frequent Confession for all believers (Pope Francis confesses daily). For those of us who are not aware
of committing any serious sin, St. Bishop Anthony Mary Claret (1807~1870) devised an examination of conscience
for venial sins:
The sin of giving entrance into your heart to any unreasonable suspicion or unfair judgment against your
neighbor.
The sin of introducing talk about another’s defects or offending charity in any other way, even lightly.
The sin of omitting out of laziness our spiritual practices or of performing them with voluntary neglect.
The sin of having a disordered affection for somebody.
The sin of having a vain esteem for oneself, or of taking vain satisfaction in things pertaining to us.
The sin of receiving the holy sacraments in a careless way, with distractions and other irreverences, and without
a serious preparation.
Impatience, resentment, any failure to accept disappointments as coming from God’s Hand; for this puts
obstacles in the way of the decrees and dispositions of Divine Providence concerning us.
The sin of giving ourselves an occasion that can even remotely blemish a spotless condition of holy purity.
The fault of advertently hiding from those who ought to learn them, one’s bad inclinations, weaknesses, and
mortifications, seeking to pursue the road of virtue not under the direction of obedience, but under the guidance
of one’s own whims.
NEW EVANGELIZATION
Evangelizing others begins by reflecting upon and
constantly reevaluating our own personal lifestyles.
People watch what we do before they do what we say.
By their lives as well as by their words, Jesus and Mary
taught the virtues of Faith/Trust in God, humility , and
obedience to what they discerned to be the will of God
the Father.
“Repent and be saved” is the first step toward holiness;
obeying God’s laws and correcting our flaws is the Way
to Truth and eternal life. The early Christians were
identified by how they lived: “See the Christians, how
they love one another”. For our part, do we look to serve
the needs of others or do we always place ourselves
first? Before preaching God’s message of Love to others,
spend time in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Live and
study your Faith before reaching out to others.
BIBLE
Occasionally parishioners have made requests to
reintroduce a Bible Discussion-Study Group here at
St. Raymond. At a recent meeting, several individuals
trained in Theology and Sacred Scripture met to plan for
such sessions. Discussions will focus on the Mass read-
ings for the upcoming Sunday and have two objectives:
1) to provide the opportunity for participants to share their
own personal insights into the readings and 2) to present
guidelines set down by the Church for studying and inter-
preting the Bible. Although these sessions are tentatively
scheduled to begin regularly in September, an exemplary
session will be offered to all who are interested this
Tuesday morning, July 24, after the 8:00 a.m. Mass
(about 8:45) in the Parish Social Hall. If you are
interested and available, please make an effort to attend
daily Mass on this day and participate in this introductory
session.
