The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal supports the daily work of our Church throughout Brooklyn and Queens in ways no one parish can accomplish

alone by supporting the following ministries:

Catholic Youth Ministry Initiative, Catholic Charities;

Hospital, College and Prison Chaplains;Diocesan Vocations Office;

Catholic Migration Services; Office of Faith Formation; Bishop Mugavero Residence for

infirmed clergy; Futures in Education Scholarship Foundation

All donations made to the ACA above our parish goal are returned directly back to our parish for operations and improvements.

The ACA is independently audited each year for full transparency.

ST. RAPHAEL’S GOAL: $48,290

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart. (Silent pause for adoration) I embrace you as if you were already

there And unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

CORONA-CANCELLED AT ST. RAPHAEL’S:

1. All public Masses, devotions, prayer groups, meetings, classes (children and adults), until further notice.

2. Our May 14th celebration of Confirmation with and at Queen of Angels. To be re-scheduled.

3. Our May 17th First Communions. To be re-scheduled. 4. Regularly scheduled sacraments such as Penance and

Baptism, until further notice. 5. May Flea Market and maybe some others. 6. Rectory office hours and appointments.

YOUR SUPPORT IS IMPORTANT

Even though our church is closed during the pandemic, the par-ish keeps paying basic expenses such as salaries, utilities and insur-ance. Thanks to those who have mailed in or dropped off (in the rec-tory mail slot) their donations. Your partnership is appreciated.

Mothers Day is this Sunday, May 10th.

A novena of parish Masses will offered for your Mothers Day intentions.

List them on the Re-membrance envelope in your parish pack, and re-turn it for placement at the altar.

“The woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31).

PRAY FOR THE SICK…

With Masses suspended, we list here the names of those who are ill and should be held in prayer: Yolanda Rodriguez, Daria Lerro, Jan Wnek, James Leung, Liz Kleven, Migdalia Peña, Juan Xelo, Aleida Garces, Isabel Trujillo, Raymond Ritman, Anaury Guzman, Joanne Lynch, Thomas Dowling, Cesar Fernando Cadme, Gertrude O’Brien, Edda Azzalini, Hugh Forde, Cele Rossi, Kenny Gagot, Pat Griffin, Derry O’Leary, Robert Taft, Mimi Ryan, Kathleen O’Brien, Ciarran McGrath, Doro-thy Markiewicz, Josefina Estrada Martinez, Gina Maldonado, Fannie Pinto, Angelina Muñoz, Ger-man Cazeres, Rita Lopez, Carmen Del Rosario Barros, Norma Torres, Alirio Lagos, Laura Gudiño, Luz America Zarria, Zelmira Ladeno, Peggy Ann Callanan, Charlotte Rappaport, Chris Harrington, Melissa Harrigan, Kenneth Jonelunas, Richard and Bob Boehler, Kristin Revy, Ann Nelson.

BELLS OF HOPE Bishop DiMarzio has en-couraged every parish, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to ring their outside church bells daily at 3:00 pm. Through the kindness of Richard O’Connor, this began on the designated day, April 3rd, and will con-tinue until further directives. The tolling is an en-couragement to pray in silence at that time. The “Bells of Hope” is meant to be a sym-bol of solidarity with the faithful, as well as with all who are suffering during the crisis, especially those who have died and the first responders who put their lives at risk on a daily basis.

THE CARES ACT

Catholic institutions qualify for funding under the recently passed CA-RES Act. It oversees money in loans and grants to enable small businesses to survive the pandemic. Employers that maintain employ-ment or rehire laid-off employees (in St. Raphael’s case, 4 individuals) would be eligible to have their loans forgiven, es-sentially turning the loan into a grant. We received word this past week that St. Raphael’s has been approved for this loan.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DELAYED… Because public Masses have been canceled until further notice, the dates of special collections have been postponed. Some (such as Holy Places in the Holy Land, Senior Priests) took place during Holy Week; others in the near future. If you submitted contributions to any such causes in advance, be assured that those funds will be held aside and added to the even-tual totals.

THIS „N THAT 1. If you are a pet owner affected by Covid-19, the Animal

Planning Task Force can help. The pet hotline is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. Phone 877-204-8821.

2. If you are having thoughts of suicide, call the National Sui-cide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources.

3. Our Food Pantry continues its “thank-you’s” for the most recent assists: U.A. Plumbers Local Union No 1 ($500); the College Point NYPD Tow Pound for a considerable delivery of foodstuffs; Queen of Angels parish, likewise for substan-tial food donations; the Sunnyside Kiwanis Foundation ($100); GreenValley Marketplace of Sunnyside ($100); Sprint Telephone for some shelf-stable food care-kits; the Wise Needle for handcrafted face masks; bakery-owner Hazel for a few hundred fresh-baked scones; and individual parishioners and neighbors from the community who send food or cash donations. All deeply appreciated!

PARISH SUPPORT Our parish expenses continue, without the Mass collections. Thanks to all who send in their offerings or drop them off in the rectory mail slot. We now have online giving available. You can text SUNDAY to (646) 692-0050 or visit hps://givecentral.org/str-queens. Your ongoing support is needed and admired.

PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS TO THE VIRGIN MARY DURING THE PANDEMIC “We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”. In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection. Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment. Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust. Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health. Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone. Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus. Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity. Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer. Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course. To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
