IN OUR PARISH

Dear Parishioners and EAA Visitors,

People have different ideas about vacation time. Most persons understand it as getting away from it all. Some seem to see vacation time as letting go of everything. Still others see it simply as a change of pace. Perhaps vacation time can be understood as a bit of all these things, but none taken to an extreme.

We have a number of people here this week for the EAA Convention. We welcome them and their example of vacation time. They have come to explore the wonderful joys of planes and flight. They leave their homes with a purpose to come away to this convention. In so doing they get away, without simply doing nothing.

For our visitors and many locals, vacation time is about changing our pace without letting go of important things. We continue to care for others around us, learn about new things and grow in our relationship with God and others. Our God wants us to have recreation, that is, re-create ourselves. He calls for Sabbath rest and prayer because it is good for us.

Perhaps during this time we realize how much we push ourselves when we are not on vacation. We need to rest better during other times of the year, making time for Sabbath rest and prayer because it brings us more understanding and focus in our ordinary lives. We have vacation time because in rest, we spend time to truly learn and grow in our relationships with God and others.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – (MARK 6:30-34)

Sheila is a math teacher in an inner city school with City Police in the halls and metal detectors at the entrances.

Her husband worries about her and asks her why she can’t just get a job in some nice quiet suburban school

closer to home. Sheila understands his worry. She worries herself, sometimes. But something keeps her where

she is. These kids “…are like sheep without a shepherd…” she explains. “They need someone to teach them.”

Fred conducts adult literacy classes at the County Jail. The inmates range from 18 to 54. Many of them have

been here before, and while some will go on to jobs and a life outside these walls many more will be back. Most

of his students have never known what it’s like to hold down a regular job. As they tell Fred their stories he

learns that some of them, the ones lucky enough to have had a place to call home, grew up in dysfunctional

families. The less fortunate, if you can call such an upbringing ‘fortunate’, grew up on the streets. Fred’s family

worries about him. They ask him why he can’t get a job teaching at a nearby junior college. But, like Sheila,

Fred tells them, “These people ‘…are like sheep without a shepherd…’. They need someone to teach them.”

Yes, Sheila and Fred could probably make more money doing something else. And their families would

certainly be relieved to have them in more traditional teaching situations. But while they mean well, their

families just don’t understand. They don’t understand that when Sheila and Fred look into the eyes of their

students their “…heart[s are] moved with pity for them…”. They don’t understand why, every September,

Sheila and Fred always come back – back to the inner city school, back to the County Jail, back to their students.

“Why must you be the one to teach them?” they ask. And, to tell the truth, Sheila and Fred have often asked

themselves the same question. But in their hearts they knew what they must do. “They are like sheep without a

shepherd…” they responded, “…and [they] began to teach them many things”.

RCIA begins in September

Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic but aren’t sure how or where to begin the process? Do you have questions about Mary, the sacraments, the Mass, saints, the Pope, Catholic views? The answers are just around the corner with RCIA beginning on Monday, September 10th at 6:30 PM. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process that begins the Catholic journey of faith. Beginning September, inquirers and team members meet Monday evenings to break open the scriptures, share life and faith experiences, reflect on God’s grace and focus on questions about the Catholic faith. If you or someone you know is interested in or curious about the Catholic faith, consider the RCIA program. There is nothing to sign or commit to. The process is open to all adults. Contact Judy Mayo at 920-426-3627 or [email protected]

Stations of the Cross:

Catholic Cemeteries of Oshkosh is proud to announce that we have had the Stations of the Cross installed at Sacred Heart Cemetery. The fourteen Stations were cast in Bronze for us by the Inspired Artisans Firm in Milwaukee. They were mounted on Granite monuments and installed for us by Bob Reinke of Reinke Monuments of Oshkosh.

Stations are placed next to benches previously memorialized by families from many of our Oshkosh Parishes. This makes the perfect setting for quiet prayer and meditation. Please stop out to see them and to take time to pray for your loved ones.

If you or a group of family members want to memorialize a loved one or family, the price is $2,000. This will cover all costs including the lettering of your memorial message. Please contact me with any questions at 920-379-6482 or call the St. Jude office at 920-231-9782 and ask for Jan.
