DEAR PARISHIONERS...
We are in Easter time, a time to celebrate, rejoice, and give praise to God! It is also a time to celebrate others joining us at the table of the Lord and receiving Jesus. This month we honor Mary, our Mother who birthed Jesus into this world; may we bring Him forward in all of our environments and share Him with all we know, to birth Him into this world.
Other moms choose to love and nurture a child as their own and lavish love on a child they chose to adopt. Moms today say “yes” to life and to bringing life into this world, to bringing a child created in the image of God. Whether your mom is alive or passed on, we all have a mother in Mary who said “yes” to God and “yes” to life. She is always pointing us toward her Son, Jesus.
This month we also honor Mary, Mother of the Church. She continues to point us to her Son, Jesus. We look to make her fiat our own in our lives.
Last Saturday evening St. Raphael hosted Encounter, an evening of praise and worship and Adoration of our Lord. It was a powerful spiritual time of going deeper and encountering the living Christ in Adoration. Opportunity of Reconciliation brought us even closer. One person commented, “I never knew what praise and worship of our Lord was until I came [for Encounter].” On a personal level, I can share that the Spirit moved powerfully and the Sacrament of Reconciliation brings freedom.
Easter time in the church year is a time of joy and sharing in the power of experiencing the risen
Christ. Claim it for yourself and live in the power of the Risen Christ. Look forward to Pentecost, the
celebration of Jesus’ Spirit who comes to dwell in us!

Baby Bottles Are Back!
Starting this weekend, there will be an
opportunity for everyone to help Bella Medical
Clinic. The baby bottles will be available in the
Gathering Space. During the month of May fill
it with whatever coins or currency you can
provide and then return it to St. Raphael by Memorial Day
weekend. The bottles are used over and over again and
cost over $1 a piece, so please, if you take a baby bottle,
return it by the end of May.
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome our visitors. This weekend is New Member
information Weekend. Please stop by Good Samaritan Hall for information, fellowship, and to enjoy a
fresh cup of coffee and donut holes.

Finals Week is Coming Soon at UW-Oshkosh
Can you help Father Jason and
the Catholic Newman Center?
Finals at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh begin May
12 and end May 16. To minister to the students, the
Catholic Newman Center provides snacks and serves a
dinner (we get between 10 and 15 students a night). We
need your help in this ministry.
How you can help?
Bring a dish for dinner (casseroles, lasagna, salad, soup,
etc). Call the Newman Center (920-233-5555) and let us
know what day you will bring a dish and about how many
people it can serve. Then bring that dish to the Newman
Center before 4 pm on the day of the dinner. We need
dishes for four meals, May 12-15.
Bring snacks (bakery, chips and salsa, vegetables,
etc). Please bring these items during the beginning of
finals week (May 12). While not necessary, we would
appreciate a call before you bring the items over so that
we are ready.
Pray for our students. Please pray that they do well on
their finals, but most importantly that they follow the
Lord Jesus Christ well.

Reflecting on the Scriptures (Acts 2:14, 22-33, Ps. 16:1-11, 1 Peter 1:17-21, Luke 24:13-35)
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke: 24: 32)
Confused, disappointed, dejected, and grieving---these two disciples had heard Jesus, seen the miracles, and truly
encountered Jesus. This Jesus lived forgiveness, love, healing. This Jesus raised Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha.
The result of those past three days was incongruous with the Christ they had come to believe in. All hope had vanished. They moved slowly, depression robbing the spring from their steps. They were hurting in their grief. Their Messiah and
their dreams had just been crucified. Most of all, there was fear, not fear that they themselves might be crucified. Theirs was that more horrible fear that comes from the realization that perhaps nothing makes a difference after all, maybe our
dreams and our hopes point to nothing more real than the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny.
The stranger on the road had been a consolation for these two dejected travelers. Why not ask him to stay? They
continued to share conversation and bread. Suddenly their eyes were opened: in the breaking of the bread. Their hearts were burning, recognizing Jesus. They understood. Jesus was with them again. Their dreams popped like fireworks anew
and alive! Their hope, their dream had not died on that dark Friday afternoon. The Son had risen and their hope was alive again.
Some days I feel like I am trudging along on the road, but I am never in despair, never without hope, not even on the
darkest of days. Not even on the days I am forced to journey the rest of the way with one less friend, one less family member. In the big picture, I am just tent camping here on earth until I arrive home, in the lap of the one who loves me,
who died for my “schmuckiness” of sin.
I encounter people who live the Holy Saturday wait, who are afraid to hope. Jesus said, “Be not afraid”. To any fear, I
say “Get behind me, Satan”. I am journeying and Jesus is with me. It is in his company that I discuss my concerns, questions, and doubts, as they steal in. I am also called to share my hope and offer consolation, bringing others to the
breaking of the bread in the Eucharist. At the Eucharistic table, I recognize Jesus, his sacrifice, his death, and rising to life and hope. May you and I bring others along on the journey to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread of life.
Resurrection joy and Easter hope as we journey homeward! Alleluia! Alleluia! Betty Schwandt - Pastoral Associate
THANK YOU PARISHIONERS OF ST. RAPHAEL CHURCH!
The David, Kentucky adult mission team is glad to report that the trip was a success. We thank all parishioners that we represented for their generosity and prayers. Our team of ten was able to put up a two bedroom addition to a trailer home for a family of six. We were able to get the roof up and shingled, the rooms insulated along with attic area, heat installed and windows installed. We also were able to do required general maintenance to the home. The young couple was very eager to help us in any way possible. Two members of the team were able to do some yard work at the mission and help with unloading food for the food pantry.
We thank Sister Kathleen and St. Vincent’s Mission for giving us a place to stay that allowed for good fellowship and relaxation at the end of the day. All participants found it a rewarding experience and our hope is that more parishioners will be able to participate in the future. One need not have a lot of skills, for there is work available for all levels of experience. Thank you again to the generous parishioners of St. Raphael for their support.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES – It was Monday morning. When the alarm went off at 5:30 am. Beth reached over to turn it off so it wouldn’t wake Frank and the kids. Then she quickly made coffee, showered and dressed before calling upstairs to the rest of the family. It was the first day of the week.
By the time everyone was on their way Beth felt like she had already put in a full day instead of just getting started. Backing out of her garage into the Monday morning rush hour traffic she thought about the sermon she had heard in church on Sunday. “How much simpler it must have been for the disciples,” she thought. “After all, they had actually seen Jesus in the flesh.” As the light turned red she found herself wondering why, on their way home to Emmaus, two people who knew Jesus well, people who saw Him every day, would not have recognized Him.
But then the light turned green and the thought was lost in traffic. Her day passed pleasantly enough, for a Monday – the usual orders to process and disgruntled customers to pacify. Working for a small cleaning supply company was hardly glamorous but the boss was fair and she liked the work. Almost before she knew it, it was 5:00 pm. She would have just enough time to stop by the cleaners on her way home and have dinner on the table for her family by 6:00. No time to think about Sunday’s sermon now.
Later, after the kids had gone to bed, Beth thought about her day and all the people who had walked with her. She thought about her husband, her children, her boss and her customers. Yes, she believed that in some mysterious way Jesus was present in all of them, but that wasn’t the same thing as those two on the road. These were people she knew. These were people she saw every day. This was different, not like those disciples at all. If Jesus showed up at her dinner table she would definitely recognize Him. At least she was pretty sure she would…wouldn’t she?

Clothing Drive for our sister parish One Hundred Migrant Men
In early July, migrants from Mexico, will come to Macon County, TN, to work on the tobacco harvest. These young
men, most of whom are about eighteen to their twenties in age, come to stay in the US for about six months. They leave
their wives, children, and mothers at home. They harvest tobacco and send the money back to their families.
Harvesting tobacco and the subsequent handling, drying and
packing of it is physically hard work. It also comes with several health related dangers including Green Tobacco
Disease and contact with various molds and pesticides.
Fr. Vic has asked for our assistance in providing extra clothing for these men when they first come to work in Macon County.
Workers learn that in order to avoid direct contact with the tobacco leaves, they need to have long sleeved shirts and
changes of clothing. We are calling this clothing drive “One
Hundred Migrant Men” because our goal is to provide about 100 of each item. Some men will need a few things; some
may need all.
For the next two weekends, St. Raphael will collect the following items:
Long sleeved shirts, gently used, sizes S to M
Jeans or work trousers, sizes S to M
Sweatshirts or very lightweight jackets,
sizes S to M
Underwear, socks, lightweight work gloves (new)
Please return these items to church by May 18.
There will be bins in the Gathering Space. The Human Concerns Bulletin Board contains more pictures and
information about tobacco and the harvesting process.
God bless,
Tom and Maureen Donovan, Sister Parish Coordinators
Catholic Identity Pick of the Week: Understanding Marian Devotion
One of the biggest misunderstandings of Catholics by non-Catholics is that Catholics worship Mary. Catholics don't worship Mary. We worship the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus' mother, Mary, we honor and love. Since she is the mother of the Church, we understand her to be our mother as well. Instead of worshiping Mary, we regularly ask her to intercede for us: "Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death". We know that Mary is in heaven, and we ask Mary to take our prayers to her Son, because what son can deny his mother's request. Mary is the model of Christian virtues and so we imitate her. In your prayer, contemplate Mary's role in the life of Jesus, and how she can be a bigger part of your life.
