Most Difficult Vocation My dear parishioners, we seek the company of others with whom we can share our frail humanity. We do this on many levels. We instinctively search for meaning when things go badly and with our good God’s blessing, we learn and grow. However, the litany of mankind's unhappiness cannot suppress a profound spiritual truth. Suffering is intrusive to human dignity. Man was not created to suffer. Al -though suffering is within the norm of human life in our broken world, it is never normal. Our reluctance to speak of affliction, especially in spiritual terms, is understandable. Human vocabulary is painfully thin, and suffering is rarely the topic of day-to-day conversation. Not infrequently, when a painful or tragic situation occurs in the life of someone dear to us, we do not know what to say. Suffering shatters the powerful strongholds of human intellect and will. Man may deny grief, but he cannot dispute its existence. The passage of time may relieve the sharpness of pain, but sorrow does not end on its own accord or by force of will. Paradoxically, a sorrowful experience can engrave itself in human memory with vexing clarity, while the process of healing seems wholly indistinct, even frustrating. Feeling overwhelmed and broken, the grieving person may believe that his soul has dissolved into a limitless abyss. The grief process invites the sufferer to become spiritually renewed even as he dwells in the heart of the desert. Grief seeks healing, and this form of reconciliation must be suffered through. Compassion is a most difficult vocation, precisely because it is not a negotiated transaction between relative equals. It is not enough for a person walking the heights of the mountain tops merely to shout out words of consolation to a person suffering in the dark valley below.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Here is a message from Daniel Cardinal DiNardo to the Archdiocese, March 17, 2020 concerning the COVID-19 (coronavirus): • “MASS: The public celebration of all weekday and Sunday Masses will be

suspended in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston effective Wednes-day, March 18, 2020. Churches are to remain open for individual and pri-vate prayer observing their normal hours, as discerned by the Pastors.

• “HOLY WEEK: Particular directives will be given for Holy Week in the event the crisis continues through that

time period. • “FUNERALS: Funerals may take place only in the form of ‘The Rite of Committal with Final Commenda-

tion’ (also known as the ‘graveside’). A memorial Mass can be scheduled appropriately at a later date.” • We will update our website, www.stphiliphuffmantx.org, and Facebook page as necessary and will also

communicate through the MyParish app. Please also visit www.archgh.org for the most recent updates from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

As we all use good judgement to limit our contact with other people in a public place, I hope you will take the opportunity to find peace and quiet with our Lord in prayer. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all un-derstanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 4:6-7] In the peace of Christ, Kathy Corbett

March 22nd parent meeting and March 28th & 29th Confirmation retreat are CANCELED.

We ask parishioners to pray for our Confirmation students, their sponsors and their parents.

Parish prayer for Confirmandi Students

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide our Confirmandi students in everything that they do. Transform their hearts and lead them closer to you. Help them to always seek to be a disciple that is centered on Christ and his love. We ask all of these things in the name of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

Congratulations, Brother Jesse!

Jesse Araiza received the 2nd & 3rd Degree in the St. Philip’s Knights of Columbus council 9794. On February 29, he was among 62 candidates at the Co-Cathedral in Houston. His wife Linda, daughter Jeanette, and grandchildren Cameron, Savannah, and Caiden were in attendance. The Knights look forward to his active participation in council charities, service, and events.

LENTEN REFLECTION

Paul reminded the Corinthi-ans, "We proclaim Christ crucified." Christ's weakness is stronger than any human strength. The power of the cross is greater than anything the world or evil has to com-bat it.

The Lenten season is one of repentance, self-denial, almsgiving, and prayer. Many in our modern world do not see any wisdom in denying themselves anything. Those swept away in a consumer culture want more and they want it faster, bigger, and better. They also are looking for easy and quick satisfaction, unwilling to wait long.

Paul speaks of the "foolishness of God" and how it is wiser than any human wisdom. Lent is a time to put aside that which we feel and think as humans and put on the attitude of Christ. The cross of Christ is neither easy nor fleeting, and it will ask us to deny our very selves for him. To the human mind it makes no sense. However, by putting on Christ and seeing with his eyes, we see reality with clarity. Our sacrifice can lead to riches that only a "foolish" man would covet. But it is exactly there that we are satisfied and fulfilled.

CCE Transitioning to Online Classes

I hope this finds you all healthy and well-stocked with soap and toilet paper. To alleviate parents' and teachers' concerns about meeting in large groups and to provide our families a solid plan moving forward, CCE will be tran-sitioning to on-line classes for the remainder of the se-mester. Catechists will email lesson material to their classes each week for the students to complete with their parents at home. • For K-5, this email may include using Loyola Press' on-

line resources that families can log on and com-plete. Your child's teacher will tell you which unit and lesson to do each week. These lessons also include interactive assessments and reviews that students can complete and then email results back to the teacher. If needed, the appropriate pages from the textbook or other supplementary information will also be provided in the email.

• 6th/7th Grade does not have online lessons, so eve-

rything to complete a particular week's lesson will be included in the weekly email. Loyola Press does pro-vide an 'Interactive Session Review' on-line which your teacher may ask the children to complete after each lesson and email results back to them.

• To access the on-line resources, go

to FindingGod.com; click on the Orange box (ignore the blue box); then click on 'Parent Resources'. From there, click on your child's grade level and you will see a list of all units and lessons.

Why I became a Knight

A couple of our brothers recently shared why they be-came a Knight:

“I knew many of the Knights at St. Philip and respected how they were so active in many of our ministries. I wanted to be more engaged in charity events. It was up-lifting to see the Knights al-ways working together, know-ing that sale proceeds were to

be directed to charitable giving. The late James McCullough invited me to join “online” after a KC spon-sored Rosary at The Overlook. That was the time for my “YES.”

“I joined the Knights of Columbus because it is a worth-while organization. I believe in the beatitudes; I believe

Prime Timers News

Our active group of folks 55+ have started 2020 with great enthusiasm for a wonderful year with a trip to KSHJ1430 Catholic radio station. In February, we traveled by bus to Huntsville to visit HEARTS Museum and the Gibbs-Powell House Museum. The HEARTS museum is all about people especially the veterans who served to protect our nation, preserve our freedom, and to

secure the freedom of people around the world. The Gibbs-Powell Home was built in the Greek Revival style popular in Huntsville and in the South at that time. The Gibbs-Powell home was often visited by Sam Houston. In March, a small group moseyed on over to Htown to attend the Houston Livestock and Rodeo before it was cancelled. A great big “Thank you” to all Prime Timers who worked very hard Monday, March 9 to help move us back into our beloved St Philip. We will soon return home to St. Philip.

Tentative Upcoming Events On Friday, April 17, plans are complete for a bus trip to the Stages Repertory Theater. We will see a hilarious musical packed with a country song list that spans decades of classic and contemporary hits. This outing is subject to corona-virus restrictions. We are excited to be leaving from the St. Philip parking lot for the first time this year. In addition, trip plans are being made for outings on Saturday , June 20 and possibly the Amazon Distribution Center on Saturday August 22. Questions? Claudia Herron (832) 270-3385 or Sammy Dennard (432) 267-5459

This year the United States census will be conducted and our archdiocese is en-couraging us to participate because it is important to our communities and nation. We are told that it is Easy, Safe, and Important. It is a fact that from one-third to one-half of our population has moved since the last census ten years ago. This changes the needs of every community due to the needs of the people in that com-munity. The Census is Easy because it only consists of 9 questions. There is no question

regarding immigration or citizenship. The Census is Safe because no other governmental agency will be able to access the information collected. It is against the LAW. The Census is Important because the distribution of 675 billion dollars will be impacted by the results of this year’s census. Improvement of our roads, build-ings, bridges, etc. will all be improved or neglected due to the results of this census. Even our electoral votes are affected by the census! By March 12th everyone will receive a letter encouraging us to participate. We may respond online or call in our information. On April 20th the census form will be mailed to everyone, even if you have already respond-ed. If you are interested in being a census taker go to the following site.

• Your child will use the textbook pages provided and parents will use the online resource to help them understand the lesson, share information about the saints discussed and have the child take the 'Interactive Session Review'.

• 8th/9th grade and Confirmation textbooks do not

have online resources. All materials will be emailed each week with instructions. If any family does not have the technology at home to make this work, we can arrange to get you a textbook and the corresponding instruction pages from the teacher's manu-al. Call Becky Pursell @ (713) 516-7376 to make arrangements to get the material.

Be assured that the entire CCE team is here to assist you with these lessons in every way possible. Do not hesitate to call, text, email or send a carrier pigeon if that's what it takes. We are happy to hear from you and lend assistance.

We are a strong community of faith, and we will get through this new challenge with calm and grace. Tru-ly, St. Philip is more prepared to take on the challenge of disruption and change than any other group I know. As of now, no further scheduling changes are planned, but keep checking the St. Philip app, website, email and weekly bulletin for further updates as need-ed. I know the entire CCE team will miss seeing our students in class and look forward to a wonderful sum-mer VBS program.

Prayer During Coronavirus

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this ill-ness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen. Prayer during Coronavirus, Archbishop Jose Gomez, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, March 13,2020.

Journey in the Catholic Faith

Our next Bible study of March 23rd at 7:00 pm has been CANCELED until further notice. We routinely meet the 2nd and 4th Mon-days of every month.

Contact Ray & Deb at 719-660-8880 or email [email protected] for more infor-mation.

Suffering is, in short, a station of the cross. No mortal is offered immunity from the consequences of the hu-man condition or his moral duty to accept them. If re-demption is to be found in sorrow, then it will be found in Jesus Christ and among those who share his merciful love. We pursue the spiritual life precisely that we may be schooled in compassion. We learn to suffer the experience of another by entering the de-sert and pitching our tent with him as Christ did for humankind. That we might not be strangers to God, Our Lord di-rects us to offer proofs of love to the spiritually wounded. Trusting in Jesus Christ to guide and pro-tect us in ways that we cannot, we pray: "Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountiful-ly with you. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I walk before the Lord in the land of the living." [Psa 116:7-9] Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary. PARISH DINNER

Saturday, April 25 at 5 pm in the parish hall

POSTPONED until further notice

We cannot travel into the darkness without a source of light. Those going through the Sec-ond Scrutiny have come seeking light instead of darkness. When Jesus heals the blind man, he not only gives to him a physical sight that is real, but he also provides for him a new spir-itual lens through which he can see the world. Those who witness the healing, those who then encounter the man, and even those who maintain a cynicism toward him, all have been offered this new way of seeing the world. Those of us who have been baptized have this gift of new sight, but too often we either choose to put on glasses of sin or despair or act like we cannot see that which exists clearly in front of us. We pray for those who will be baptized at Easter to be freed from their darkness, while we oftentimes choose to live with our eyes closed. As we listen to the words of Jesus in the Gospel proclaiming he is the Light of the World, let us resolve to allow God to provide a light for our path so that we may share the good news of this Light with all around us.

My people, what have I done to you? Or in what have I offended your? Answer me. What more should I have done, and did not do? I led you out of the land of Egypt, and you prepared a cross for me. I opened the Red Sea before you, and you opened my side with a lance. I gave you a royal scepter, and you have given me a crown of thorns. With great power I lifted you up, and you have hung me upon a cross. My people, what have I done to you, or in what have I offended you? Answer me.

4th Sunday of Lent

Can we see the goodness around us?

Today we have the story of a man born blind. In Jesus' time, blindness was viewed as a punishment for sin. Lent is all about looking inward and rooting out sinful desires and actions. So this story of a

blind man and Jesus restoring his sight is a story about the forgiveness of sin.

How often do we hold on to sinful ways or thoughts? Do we need Jesus to give us something in our lives to see again? Or do we need to concentrate on something we do well so that our "sight" may be improved?

This week, let us look through eyes of faith and attempt to see goodness around us. Also, let us help each other to remove sin so that we might see God more clearly.
