At the recent New Kent High School graduation ceremonies, Dr. Robert F. “Rick” Richardson, Jr.

was the speaker. Some of you know him as Superintendent of New Kent County Public Schools.

Others of you might know him because he and his wife attend St. Peter’s from time to time. As part

of his speech, he used a piece called “The Parable of the Pencil.” I had not heard this before and

thought it was excellent, well worth passing on to you. I’ve been unable to determine the original

author, but a Google search will turn up many examples. Here is one.

The Parable of the Pencil

The pencil maker took the pencil aside, just before putting him into the box. There are five

things you need to know, he told the pencil, before I send you out into the world. Always

remember these five things, never forget them, and you will become the best pencil you

can be.

One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in

Someone's hand.

Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you will need it; it

will help you become a better pencil.

Three: Erasers are there for a reason. You will be able to correct the mistakes you will

make.

Four: The most important part of you will always be what's inside.

Five: On every surface you are used on, leave your mark. No matter what the condition,

you must continue to write.

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in

its heart.

Now, think of yourself as that pencil. Replace the pencil with yourself. Here are five

things you need to know; always remember them, never forget them and you will become

the best person you can be.

One: You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in

God's hand. Allow other human beings to access you for the many gifts you possess.

Two: You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, by going through vari-

ous problems, but you'll need it to become a stronger, better person. (Continued on page 6)

Our HVAC Challenge

March 5, 2011 was a memorable day for my family because it was the date Sarah and Sumit were mar-ried. It also marked a challenging day for the infra-structure at St. Peter’s because this was the day that

our boiler went kaput!

As I opened the door to the boiler room to deter-mine why there was no heat in the church that day, it became very clear that a significant failure had oc-curred to our heating and cooling system. After shut-ting off the leaking water supply and turning off the circulator pumps, it became painfully obvious that our boiler may have suffered a non-repairable rup-ture. Unfortunately, further investigation by HVAC technicians agreed that our 17 year old boiler was shot and it would not be safe to attempt a restart of

the system.

With this failure in the early spring, we thought that we could squeak by a few cold Sundays and still provide cooling in the summer months. Unfortu-nately, we have found that this solution won’t work because the underground piping to the church also ruptured and our “make-up” water system can’t keep

up with the demand.

So – where does that put us? First of all, it is rec-ommended that you dress lightly for summer ser-vices because the anticipated repair, or shall I say renovation, of our HVAC system will not be com-

pleted during this period.

What are we doing about this? The Vestry met May 14, and after reviewing several scenarios, agreed to proceed with the replacement of our obso-lete oil-fired boiler system with two energy-efficient LP gas boilers that would provide service to the church and parish house independently. It is also the intent to design these systems in a cascading format that allows one boiler to back up the other in case of

potential failures.

But, and there is always a “but”; St. Peter’s is a very “different” type of structure that does not permit the Vestry to simply seek pricing for the installation of an out-of-the-box heating and cooling solution. Rather, our first step is to engage a professional

A Note of Appreciation To my St. Peter’s Parish family:

I would like to extend my enduring gratitude for the outpouring of love and support you all showed me and my family following the loss of my brother, Jason. I continue to draw on my faith as this time of trouble and sorrow passes. The people of St. Peter’s are an essential part of that faith. Our communion in Jesus’ name bolsters and affirms it in me.

Thank you all for being there for us.

Sincerely,

Traci Carlson

~ ST. PETER'S ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC August 7 ~ Anna & Boogie Davis and Paul & Marian Davis, along with their families, have once again invited St. Peter’s to their beautiful Pamunkey River home for the Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday, August 7.

The service of Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 am, with a shared lunch and afternoon of fun fellow-ship to follow. Everyone is asked to bring one or two dishes to share, and blankets or chairs. Provided items will include plates, utensils, tea, lemonade, ice for the beverages, and fried chicken.

Please bring swim suits, sun screen, towels, and water toys. Boats and kayaks are welcome as well. Life preservers are also recommended. You may want to bring coolers with ice for food left over after lunch — in case you stay long enough to want to eat again!

As a reminder, EVERYONE’S help is needed to take down tables, clear trash, and other clean up details fol-lowing the day’s activities. Helping with clean up is a great way to thank the Davis family for their very gener-ous hospitality!

Directions to the Davis farm are available in the Parish House foyer. Please call the church office or Padgette Evelyn (932.3289) if you have questions. In the event of inclement weather, there will be a message on the church voice mail.

So, come by car or boat and enjoy worship and a wonderful day on the beautiful Pamunkey!

Christian Education

Youth Sunday is typically one of my favorite ser-vices of the year and this year was no exception! The pews were packed waiting to hear reflections from our graduating seniors. Erich von Hitritz and Caro-line Evelyn did a fabulous job sharing their memo-ries and experiences growing up at St. Peter's! All of the participants did a wonderful job conducting the service. Thanks to the parents and Church School teachers who invest their time and talents with these young people. The music from the Children's Choir was delightful! Many thanks to the two soloists of the day: Jack Swynford and Kendall Ezzell. You

were outstanding!

We are very blessed to have such wonderful youth and they deserve all the best that we can give them as a parish. We wish our very best to Christian, Erich, and Caroline as they each begin a new chapter in

their life. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Enjoy your summer and we look forward to Church School beginning Sunday, September 25 at

10 am.

~ Carol Nelms, Church School Superintendent

Children's Choir

Our Children's Choir had another good year! We tried a few new things such as

singing in rounds and using musical instruments. We

also had wonderful performances on Youth Sunday

by Jack Swynford, who sang, and Clayton Evelyn,

who played the sticks. Hawthorne Davis accompa-

nied the choir that day on the banjo. Kendall Ezzell

brought tears to many eyes when she sang "Amazing

Grace" a capella. We continue to enjoy tapping into

the many talents of our children. Hawthorne, Joyce,

Jennifer, and I would like to thank the parents for

encouraging your children to participate in the Chil-

dren’s Choir, and we look forward to seeing you

again in September! ~ Carol Nelms, Joyce Molina, Jennifer Ezzell,

Back to School Fair

Matthew's Haven will host its 10th Annual Back to School Fair Friday, August 19. We are now accepting

donations of school supplies for this event. Any gift of paper, pencils, notebooks, binders, markers, etc.

will be greatly appreciated. We are anticipating more families this year who will need school supplies.

Matthew's Haven also needs volunteers to help prepare for this event by setting up clothing and pack-

ing school supplies. We will be setting up clothing the week of August 15. Volunteers may come in the

evening or during the day, which ever suits your schedule. We plan to pack the school supplies on August

17 beginning at 4:30 in the afternoon. Brown paper grocery bags with handles are needed. Please save

these for us.

Matthew's Haven is also in need of an additional volunteer to handle phone calls. This will require di-

rect involvement with clients by assisting them with clothing or other needed items. This person will be

required to check the voice mail system every third week. It actually takes very little time. If you are

interested in helping our clients this way, please contact me at 966.9057 for more details.

Three: You will be able to correct mistakes you might make, or if not, you will be able to

grow through them.

Four: The most important part of you will always be what's on the inside.

And Five: On every surface you walk, you must leave your mark. No matter what the

situation, you must continue to serve God in everything.

If you can understand this and remember it, let us move forward with a meaningful purpose in

our hearts and a relationship with God that grows day by day by day.

Thank You to St. Peter’s ~

Thank you everyone from St. Peter’s Church for thinking of me on my graduation. It really means a lot to me. Although I don't go to church regu-larly, I consider everyone there a big part of my life. St. Peter’s has laid the foundation for my Christian beliefs. I would like to thank all of my Sunday school teachers, especially my Aunt KK (Mrs. Moore), who kick-started my Christian Education. The person that I would like to thank the most is my Memaw (Edna Christian), for making me wake up on Sunday mornings and taking me to church with her. Once again, I would like to thank everyone for the generous

and unexpected gift.

Thanks, Christian Harper

In Appreciation. . .

Inclement Weather Policy (Adopted by the Vestry Feb. 2005)

In the event of bad weather which may affect a service, the Vestry will make contact with their calling tree. Also,

the church voice mail will be updated accordingly. If you’re in doubt of what to do, contact your Vestry person or

call the church. If there is a function or event – not a service – at the church and there is inclement weather,

please make note that if the New Kent County Schools are closed on that day, then the function/event at the church will be can-

celled. Every effort will be made to change the voice mail system during the week to update for functions as well. Please keep

this information handy during times of inclement weather.

Caroline and Erich’s Youth Sunday

presentations made us proud.

mechanical engineer to develop and design a rather unique system and help the Vestry develop construction specifications for bidding such a solution. The determination was made to broaden the solicitation to include other consultants in order to compare costs, and an initial proposal for these engineering services was secured May 31. The Vestry issued a Request for Proposals seeking these offers on June 6. Responses were due by

June 17.

As of this writing, it is anticipated that we will contractually engage an engineer that best suits our needs. From that point, the Vestry will solicit bids for a renovated HVAC system. Presently, I do not know how long the construction process will take. There is a tremendous amount of work that will be needed in the existing boiler room under Richardson Hall that will include the demolition of the old system and related piping and electrical accessories. We will also face an asbestos abatement with this demolition, as some of the existing pipe insulation in the boiler room contains this material. Next, steps will include a lot of new plumbing for not only the boilers, but also removing the existing oil tank, installing the new LP tank, and piping in new LP gas supply to the boilers. And finally, there will be a rather extensive underground construction effort to replace

the existing water lines from the parish house to the church with a far more efficient piping system.

By now, I’m sure you are interested in knowing how much an undertaking of this nature may cost. Until we have a consulting engineer under contract that can provide us with estimates, I do not know the answer to this question. Just through conversations with a few plumbing and heating contractors, it is a universal agreement that, due to the uniqueness of our needs, you can’t simply apply a normal square footage multiplier to our re-quirements. It will be very expensive, and it is quite possible that a fund raising campaign will be needed for

this vital project. It is too early to assess the financial needs.

I would like to commend the Vestry for their rapid response to this issue and particularly recognize Ken Ru-bert for his research, counsel, and availability. His engineering background has truly been an asset to our ef-

forts and we will continue to seek his advice during this project.

It is the Vestry’s intent to maintain continuing communication with all parishioners regarding this issue as the findings present themselves. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member

of the Vestry.

Faithfully yours,
