2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Ambassadors for Christ
Thank you to all who have given so generously to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Thanks to all who participated in last week’s in-pew pledge weekend, helping to get us closer to our parish goal of $50,000. We will get a 50% rebate on contributions that ex-ceed our goal. I am confident that we can reach our goal if every household participates. Every sacrificial gift, no matter the amount, is important and greatly appreciated. With your gift you contribute to the ongoing mission of the Church by making possible the many diocesan ministries and services that impact us all. If you have not made a pledge or given a gift, there is still time to participate. Mail your gift to: Diocese of Metuchen, Bishop’s Annual Appeal, P.O. Box 4000, Metuchen, NJ 08840 or give online at www.diometuchen.org/BAA.

2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Prayer Ambassadors for Christ
Lord God,
You appointed St. Paul your apostle to preach the good news of salvation to the nations.
May his example and prayers inspire the faithful of the Diocese of Metuchen to become
Ambassadors for Christ.
Fill our hearts with the spirit of your charity so that we may please you in our thoughts, words and deeds and be witnesses to the
hope that does not disappoint.
You have given each of us different gifts and made us your stewards
to generously share on earth the blessings we have received through your goodness
so that the world may be reconciled to you. May the prayers of St. Paul and all the saints
be our constant encouragement so that we may be
worthy ambassadors for your Son.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

CHRISM MASS
APRIL 10, 2017 AT 7:30 P.M. CATHEDRAL OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI, METUCHEN
On Monday, April 10, 2017 Bishop James F. Checcio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this custom – which we now call the Chrism Mass – in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of con-firmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the al-tar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priest-ly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His Peo-ple; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen at 7:30 p.m.

Respect for Life
“Abortion is the least regulated invasive procedure in the country. Many states do not require that a mother be fully informed about abortion, its potential risks, and alternatives - something required for every other medical procedure in this country.” Carol Tobias, Nation Right to Life News
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” JOHN 4:13
Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. True Joy and Peace only comes when we fol-low Jesus; when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered.”

What is Almsgiving and why do we do it?
Almsgiving is donating money or good to the poor. It is a witness to fraternal charity and a work of justice that is pleasing to God.
Give alms from your possessions. Do not turn your face away from any of the poor, and God's face will not be turned away from you. Son, give alms in proportion to what you own. If you have great wealth, give alms out of your abundance: if you have but little, distribute even some of that. But do not hesitate to give alms; you will be storing up a godly treasure for yourself against the day of ad-versity. Almsgiving frees one from death, and keeps one from going into the dark abode. Alms are a worthy offering in the sight of the Most High for all who give them." (Tob. 4:7-11)
Do you struggle to give alms? Why?
Oppose NJ Assisted Suicide
Bill S2474, the NJ “Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill” Act, was released from the Senate Health, Hu-man Services, and Senior Citizen’s Committee on No-vember 3, 2016 and could be posted for a vote in the full Senate at any time. An identical bill, A2451, passed the General Assembly on October 20th. The bill would allow physicians to prescribe drugs to end the lives of individuals considered to be terminally ill.
This assisted suicide bill is a direct threat to anyone viewed as a cost liability to an insurance company. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded as an economic lia-bility, and decisions to encourage death could be driven by cost.
The facts are clear - in California, in Vermont and in Oregon - states that have passed assisted suicide bills - insurance companies have denied individuals healthcare coverage but offered them low cost drugs to end their life. Please contact your state legislators and tell them that you oppose A2451/S2474. You may send a pre-written note by visiting: http://njcatholic.org/faith-in-action.

HOLY HOUR The Oratory is hosting a Eucharistic Holy Hour
This Sunday, March 19 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Peter’s Church.
All are invited and welcome!
Prayer to St. Philip Neri
O holy St. Philip Neri, patron saint of joy, you who trusted Scripture’s promise
that the Lord is always at hand and that we need not have anxiety about anything, in your compassion heal our worries and sorrows
and lift the burdens from our hearts. We come to you as one whose heart swells with abundant love for God and all creation.
Hear us, we pray, especially in this need (pause to make your request here).
Keep us safe through your loving intercession, and may the joy of the Holy Spirit which filled your heart, St. Philip,
transform our lives and bring us peace. Amen.
THE ORATORY The New Brunswick Congregation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri has been entrusted with the pastoral care of St. Peter the Apostle parish since December 2005.
We are an incorporated 501(c)3 organization of Catholic men who are secular priests and brothers sharing the common life inspired by St. Philip Neri, based in prayer, charity, joy and humility. Our community is a Pontifical Institute of Apostolic Life.
Every Oratory house is autonomous and self-sustaining, responsible for the formation of our own members. Your participation in these fundraisers help us be able to send new members to the seminary to study for the priest-hood. Your support also enables us to provide members not already working in ministry with health insurance and all other living needs. Thank you!
For more information about the New Brunswick Oratory, please see our website at www.nboratory.org. You may also make an online donation there. God bless you!
