Dear Friends,

Recently I underwent major surgery. While I would not wish this for anyone, it turned out to be a wonder-ful blessing for me. The entire Chanel family rallied round in so many different ways to show their heartfelt concern and support. It would take volumes to tell all the touching stories. I always knew that Chanel’s mission handed down from the Class of 61 for 54 years was pure, noble, and vibrant, but now I have what you could call “documented” proof!

I think that is my main message to you in this letter – the current students at St. Peter Chanel High School have learned and are living out Gospel values and Chanel’s mission in a beautiful way.

Yes, the cover of this magazine is sporting the iPad 2 which the kids are currently using in class. It is a testament to their academic prowess and tech savvy. But the DVDs that they made for me and for Bishop Lennon as we recuperate could have only carried the thoughts and prayers that they expressed because they were born of an unbelievably wonderful Catholic education – an education that teaches the way of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints.

You, the extended Chanel family, participate in this Gospel work. You are making an incredible difference in all of our lives. Much literature is out there researching the “digital generation”. But I sleep peacefully at night because I know that our students have learned the most important lessons in life.

St. Peter Chanel High School is moving forward with courage, confidence, and hope. As one author put it: The table of God is for everyone. God goes right into the middle of life to look for all people. God wants our yes. This is what Chanel does so very well. We all say yes to God. That is the Firebird spirit.

May you always accompany us in this most remarkable journey.

God blessSister Maria

The St. Peter Chanel chapter of The National Honor Society (NHS) is promoting recycling. A new paper recycling bin has arrived at the school and is located on the southeast corner of the property. The Chanel community, as well as the area neighbors, can place newspapers, phone books, card board, and junk mail in the bin for recycling.

• The student publications continue to accept used ink cartridges for recycling. Empty cartridges can be brought to the main office for recycling. Proceeds will benefit the school newspaper and yearbook.

Students and teachers at St. Peter Chanel High School are excited to be taking a consequential step towards

bridging the technology gap in education. This year faculty and students will be able to incorporate the use of Apple’s iPad2 into their lessons. Since the earlier release of the iPhone and the previous version of the iPad, many applications,or Apps as they are commonly called, are geared towards education. What makes the iPad so perfect for the classroom? It is easy to use. Students growing up in today’s digital age have very little fear of grabbing a new piece of technology and taking it for a spin. The new features available in the iPad2 are perfect for the teachers. Jennifer Delciappo, an instructor of science and computer literacy and the onsite technology director for St. Peter Chanel states, “As teachers we are used to being the ones doing the instruction, so it can be difficult to let go and let the students learn from another source of information.” It also changes the role of the educator, from one of instructor of subject material, to that of technology teacher.

iPad 2’s can be used as a projection device which is not only great for classroom instruction, but also for showing the occasional video clip. Students can take tests and quizzes online where they receive instant feedback on what they are learning. Not only can students compose stories and poetry, but they can explore the digital realm of photography and video. Students can learn to think outside the paper and pencil box and really get creative.

The iPad2’s came to Chanel through state funds secured by the mandated services money. While there are many other options in technology available to teachers and students, choosing to purchase the iPad 2’s was an easy choice. Apple makes a great product. It is reliable and well suited to educational needs. It is no secret that Apple has been influential in education since schools began purchasing them in the mid 80’s beginning with the Apple IIc and Apple IIe in 1983 and 1984. Teachers in their 30’s and 40’s recall many of these computers as their “first” computer experience

during their own education. “I remember them well at St. Patrick’s in Hubbard. I couldn’t wait for computer class every week”, states Mrs. Delciappo. The feelings have not changed. Students gather around the cart that houses the iPad2’s as it is being pushed through the hall; they want to see the iPads and want to know when their class will get to use them. Mrs. Delciappo concludes, “Now that we have them and know how to use them, it is easy to see what we could do if we had more than 30 to work with.”

Chanel currently has a cart consisting of 30 iPad2’s and a mac book used to manage and sync them. They are very easy to maintain and can be reset and reinstalled in a matter of minutes. They are sturdy, and the Apple reliability makes them virtually trouble free.

French teacher Jackie Doerner states, “I am excited about the iPad in the school because I see it as the future of textbooks and media in the classroom. My son carries a hugh backpack, and in the future I see him carrying an iPad because it can all fit on the iPad.” Students in French class will have the opportunity to listen to free podcasts in French to enhance their comprehension and understanding of the French language. They will also have access to online flashcards and language quizzes.

Education fosters the principles of differentiated instruction, hands-on learning, and integrating a variety of learning resources into the curriculum. Mrs. Delciappo has one caution, “Just because the iPad can do something doesn’t mean it is appropriate for every class and every lesson and what works for one teacher may not work for another.” The iPad2 allows for this type of varied instruction to take place more often with less effort. Students can learn at their own pace and ability while reading an iBook, listening to a podcast, or watching a video. The iPads have laboratory apps that allow them to record changes in temperature, acidity, velocity and speed when working with chemistry or physics. They have gym and health class covered too. There are apps to record push-ups and sit-ups and to monitor nutritional eating habits which analyze and tell you what people are intaking and how they can change their nutritional choices to be more healthy. Music classes can tune their instruments and follow along with digital music sheets which analyze

what they are practicing and how well they are playing a certain piece of music.

Students feel that when they have technology available that the educational playing field becomes more level; everyone in his or her own way has a chance to succeed. It forces the traditional students to think more abstractly while allowing the creative students to express what they know in non-traditional ways. Students can email assignments, notes, and reminders to

themselves (or their teachers) or upload their documents to digital cloud based services such as Dropbox and Google Docs so they can work from home or the library.

“Teachers have to become comfortable themselves with the technology in order to help the students make an enjoyable transition and to make learning beneficial,” states Mrs. Delciappo. Teachers here at St. Peter Chanel will have the opportunity to take weekly mini lessons to learn the newest apps, quick tips and tricks, and to ask questions that may be classroom or subject specific. These lessons will allow the teachers to learn and integrate the technology at a pace that is appropriate for their class and lessons and to insure the teachers are comfortable with the technology as well.

Continue TraditionSt. Peter Chanel is honored to see alumni kids in every class! Sons and daughters of alumni enrolled as current students carry on a tradition of excellence every day as they learn the values that are part of the Chanel tradition.

This new generation of scholars carries on the tradition of academic excel-lence that has been Chanel’s hallmark since 1957. The following sons and daughters of alumni are enrolled at Chanel for the 2011-2012 school year.

David J. Abood ’85, son Nathaniel ’14Charles G. In addition to the many new teachers this school year, our Chanel family is also happy to welcome the new Vice President for Advancement, Mr. Casey Murphy. Mr. Murphy is in charge of bringing in financial gifts and contributions to the school. He is responsible for building and maintaining relations with both alumni and donors who support St. Peter Chanel. His primary goal is to “bring in as much philanthropic support to the school as possible.” Mr. Murphy also

helps with fundraising projects, such as the Benefit Auction and the Golf Tournament, and the recruitment and enrollment of students. He meets with school supporters approximately three days a week.

Mr. Murphy is a native Clevelander, though he has spent the last five years in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School in his youth. From there, he graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in history. He then moved to Arizona where he worked at Bourgade Catholic High School as the school’s Advancement Director.

His goals for the year include “to secure the future of St. Peter Chanel High School” and to “get to know as many people, faculty and staff as possible.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the St. Peter Chanel High School as Director of Athletics; and thank you also, for your support of Chanel athletics. It is this type of support, as well as many of Chanel’s other wonderful attributes: devoted alumni, talented teachers and coaches, outstanding facilities and the Catholic ideal, that makes Chanel such a special place to learn, work and grow.

It is with immense pride I wish to inform you of some great news in our community. First, our wrestling coach, Mr. Graham Coghill, has been named Ohio High School Wrestling Coach of the Year. This tremendous honor also automatically nominates him for National Coach of the Year consideration. This type of recognition is so richly deserved by a man who has devoted his life to the service of Chanel and its students. Thank you so much for all you do, Coach Coghill!

Also, our soccer team won the North Coast League, White Division, Championship this season. What a tremendous feat for a team that was

not widely heralded in the pre-season! Also along the way, Andrew Bucur was named “Plain Dealer - Player of the Week” for his accomplishments during the first week of October. What a tremendous season for Coach Nick Urban and the entire team!

Finally, our volleyball team, boys & girls cross-country teams, golf team and football team also enjoyed many successes this season. While it may not be totally reflected in win-loss records, each team displayed the heart, determination and class that personify what St. Peter Chanel High School is all about. Simply put and with all sincerity, I could not any prouder than I am of every one of these players and coaches!

With this in mind, I want to invite everyone in the Chanel community to get excited, to participate and to remember – all of us are, now and always, ambassadors of St. Peter Chanel High School.

Thank you, again, for your support and if I can be of any assistance to you at any time, I encourage you to contact me. My door is always open!

May God Bless You!

Continue Tradition

The Class of 1961 – The Class of 1961 had a 40% turn-out with 34 graduates celebrating their 50th Reunion on September 23 & 24, 2011.

The Friday evening event was held at Chanel with welcoming comments by Jack Hildebrand, 1961 Class President; a school update was provided by Sr. Maria Berlec, Chanel President/Principal; and a “Re-live Your Past Facility Tour” was conducted by Scott Gongos.

A brief memorial service in honor of the 13 deceased classmates was lead by members of the Class of 1961, Fr. James McCafferty, S.M. and Br. David James Sarnecki.

The Saturday evening event was held at a local hotel with a buffet dinner, dancing and a lot of reminiscing.

The Class of 1971 – Held their 40 year reunion on November 1, 2011 with a Mass at Chanel with the entire Chanel community that was said in honor and tribute to the parents of their Class of 1971.

The Class of 1981 – The Class of 1981 had their first reunion since graduating over 30 years ago, and a great time was had by all.

On a beautiful Friday, August 19th the group gathered for a 2 hour cruise on the Good Time III, along the downtown Cleveland shores of Lake Erie. Afterwards, the group headed down to the Winking Lizard in Independence for a late night meal and libations.

On Saturday, August 20th, the group gathered at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Independence, for a sit-down dinner and entertaining conversation.

A special thank you to alumnus Michael Craig for coordinating the logistics for a very enjoyable weekend.

The Class of 1991 – The Class of 1991 celebrated 20 years on the weekend of August 5th. Friday night was a meet and greet at Panini’s in Sagamore Hills. Saturday was a family day picnic at Walton Hills Lake.

As a surprise to the attendees, we had former Chanel staff members in attendance – Joe Lynch, Fr. James Lacrosse, Roger Abood and Mark Cotleur. A special tribute was made to Kevin Patton who passed away a few years ago.

It was good to catch-up. Although it was twenty years, it didn’t seem like that long once we all started chatting. However, looking at old photographs confirmed that we have all aged very well! We all found it rather amusing that our priorities had changed – ten years ago we were all going to do ‘this’ and ‘that’, now the chat was about children and all of their activities. We hope to have another reunion in 5 years.

The Class of 2001 – Held their 10 year reunion the weekend of October 21, 22, and 23, 2011. Friday they attended the Chanel football game and then met at DePompei’s to reminisce. Saturday they all met at Dave & Busters with their families and in the evening they went to Cadillac Ranch for dinner. Sunday was a final to their fun filled weekend at Yours Truly for brunch.
