FROM THE PRESBYTER'S DESK

Greetings to you in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!William Carey was a shoemaker. One day he heard of the millions of people in India who had not known the good news of Jesus Christ. He believed in the great commission to go into the world and preach the Gospel. He believed that the verse was directly speaking to him. So he volunteered to come to India. For seven years he worked without seeing a single convert but by the end of his life, he saw hundreds of churches and thousands of converts. Today he is known as the 'Father of Modern Missions.' He used his available resources to spread the Gospel to all. He fought against the evil social practices which were prevailing in the society. Like him, we all are missionaries of God. In our daily lives we must spend time to find possible ways to do God’s Mission. Some of you may have heard of Mr. P.U Thomas. He hails from Neendoor in Kottayam district in Kerala and started Navjeevan Trust - a nonprofit organization providing shelter and relief to the desolate and not so accepted mentally and physically challenged people. Dressed in a white mundu and shirt, Thomas has a charisma which motivates people around him to look beyond the materialistic world and help the needy. The story of Navjeevan Trust started when he as a kid was admitted to a hospital for acute stomach infection. Seeing the miserable condition of other patients who could not even afford food, he started sharing his own food with them. Delighted to see the smiles on their face, Thomas started visiting the hospital more often and seeing his dedication, the hospital granted him a job of a ward boy. His job did not end there. Later in 1970, he rented a small room at the medical college lodge with a nominal monthly rent of Rs. 250 and named it Navjeevan Trust. Today the trust provides food to almost 4000 people across 3 hospitals and spends close to Rs. 50,000 a day! The trust is built on a 5 acre land serving around 230 desolate people found on the roads and corners of the street. This is a living picture of Jesus’ mission.I greatly appreciate our Parish’s decision to spend a good percentage of its income for the purpose of charity. It is part of our mission that is entrusted to us by the commandment of Lord Jesus Christ. As of now, we are part of Shalom Mumbai Mission. Our decision to become a part of SHALOM exposes our desire to be helping underprivileged people in the society. Mission should be spread From Everywhere To Every Where!!. May God bless each one of us to do His mission faithfully wherever we are!!!

VITAL SIGNSThe Church waited for Christ's extraordinary promise, the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The waiting was rewarded, the extraordinary came, and Christ's community was immersed in the very life of God. What was next? More waiting, more praying. Luke says the church was devoted to four things: teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer. The extraordinary was to be lived out in the ordinary patterns of life. The church continued the way it began: waiting. Waiting was becoming a habit.Prayer is one of the vital signs of a healthy church – like a heartbeat. If the pulse is weak and erratic, the body is sick. If it is strong and steady, the body is healthy and strong. Look at the health of the Jerusalem church: There was a pervasive sense of awe as the people saw wonders and miraculous signs. There was great joy as they shared their money, their time and their homes. Outsiders wanted to be on the inside, as “the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:47).What the church needs today is what it has needed from the beginning: more and more of the presence of Jesus. Our greatest need isn't for more programs and meetings; our greatest need is for more of the Lord. Look again at what was happening in the Jerusalem church. God comes in churches and individuals who wait for him. To wait is to pray, to pray is to wait – not as an occasional, extraordinary thing, but as a pattern, a habit of life.Pray: Lord Jesus, we need you so desperately! Form within me, and my church, a devoted habit of waiting on you in prayer. Amen.

GOSPEL TO THE BLINDMr. Manoj Tayade, Missionary from the “Mission to the Blind” organization visited us in All Saints’ Church on Sunday, the 20th January. He has briefly explained the activities of the Mission, of which spreading the Gospel among the visually disabled persons was of the prime importance. Manoj was accompanied by a visually disabled person who sang a Hindi spiritual song. Through your benevolence they could get a handsome offertory of Rs.39,320 from box collection. If you wish to donate pre-used clothes, that will be welcome. Please bring such usable clothes to St. Paul’s Church on the 10th or to the Trust Office on the 17th February. Financial assistance is also welcome. If you need any further information please feel free to contact P. K. Kurien (9371057324).

ORPHANAGE VISITMembers of the Women’s Fellowship visited the Mother Teresa Home at Wakad on the 5th January. The group was of about 50 persons, including Sunday school children and a few well wishers. The Mother Teresa Home is managed by the Sisters of Charity. The Home has 200 inmates inclusive of the staff. Those who are being looked after are physically challenged except a few who are able to do their daily chores on their own and all of them are a disciplined lot. It is indeed heart-touching to see our own fellow beings in such disabled condition but at the same time they remind us how grateful we ought to be to our Mighty Lord for keeping us hale and hearty.. Sunday school children and teachers presented songs, a skit and gave a touching message. Achan also gave a brief talk on Christ’s love and appreciated the loving care the Sisters and staff show to the inmates. He also remembered the founder St. Teresa for her exemplary work in uplifting the downtrodden. The session closed with a vote of thanks and prayer.By your benevolence, Rs.83,200 is collected. Out of it we bought for the orphanage, pulses, grains, sugar, tea leaves, toilet soaps, cleansing lotions, diapers etc., and donated Rs 25,000/- in cash. We shared a meal with them. It was very nice to see the Sunday school children, teachers and WF members serving food and even feeding the sick persons. The visit was much thought provoking as we have got an opportunity to be with the less privileged and also it gave an insight how our Lord and Master is guiding and leading us in our lives. When we witnessed the work and life of the Sisters and the others who are working there, it made all of us to think a while and to be more thankful to the Lord for the manifold blessings we enjoy in our lives. We thank all those who have contributed to this cause and also those who have joined the visit. May the Lord bless them always to receive His strength and mercy. We thank Achan for his guidance and sincerely appreciate those who took time off to visit. A special thanks to the Sunday school for its active participation.“ Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” Ps 118:1

ANNUAL CONVENTIONOur Annual Convention, as planned, was held in the evenings of January 24-26 in the Trust Office, closing with worship service in St. Paul’s Church on the 27th. There were also retreats in separate sessions for Youth and Men’s & Women’s Fellowships. All these sessions were well attended. Rev. Anil Thomas, Missionary in Charge of CSI Andhra Mission disseminated the gospel for us through eloquent sermons. The theme mainly was ‘Attitude,’ and this subject was elicited from the Gospels and spoken in a simple language that is comprehensible to everyone present. He exhorted the congregation to adopt an attitude pleasing to God. Let us pray the Almighty that the seeds sown in us may produce a hundred, sixty or thirty fold.

SHORT PRAYERJesus, it is the pleasure of your company that makes prayer and service worthwhile. Make me aware of your sweet presence that I may serve you with gladness all my days.
