Letter from the Pastor

August is upon us. Soon the kids will be back in school, all the traveling and vacation from summer will be done, and fall is fast approaching. It seems like not long ago, summer started, but as we sit here, we’re coming up on the tail end of it. As I write this, I’m thinking about everything we’ve done over the past summer. The church has been very busy, despite this being our “slow” season.

We’ve had the Bicentennial that, by all accounts, was a success. We had 3 days in the taco stand down there, and from what I’ve heard, we did well. We also had the band concert that we volunteered to work and had a good night there as well. A lot of you volunteered and stepped up when the call arose.

We had the meeting on shared ministry here at church, which was a rousing success. While expecting 50 people to show, we ended with 92 attending. I can’t tell you how many people came up and told me afterwards how impressed they were with not only the seminar, but the hospitality that we as a church showed—all the volunteers that showed up and worked, as well as brought cookies. It was an absolutely great night, and it really got people talking about us.

I know there have been other events, too, that we’ve asked for people to volunteer for, and I have not been disappointed with the willingness of people in the church to step up—and to indulge me in some of my more “off-kilter” services and sermons. Now, I’ve grown up in church all my life. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been going with my parents, and other than the few months break I had, I’ve seen a lot.

I can honestly say that I’ve never seen a church so willing to step up and to volunteer. I need merely ask once and I have an overwhelming response of people who want to help out with whatever the practice; I’ve not had to scrape up volunteers and wait until the last minute with hopes that I’ll have enough people to cover whatever the event is.

This is one of those underrated things that really makes me thrilled to be serving you. A lot of the time it takes a whole bunch of pleading and cajoling to get people to do work. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for being willing to help out. It makes my job so much easier, and it really fills me with hope that the church is willing to take on extra projects. A big part of turning this around is being visible in the community we serve. Well, we are certainly doing that. One of the first signs of a dying church is that apathy has set in. I can absolutely tell you that isn’t the case here. So again, thank you so much for the work that you’ve done so far. It’s so truly awesome to see a church so willing to be involved, and, for that, I can’t express my gratitude enough.

a shelter for abused women in Warrenton. We will collect personal care items for the shelter at this meeting.

Suggested items include: toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, laundry detergent, over-

Our Mission this year was to collect small change, which supported the

Southern Warren County Food Pantry.

Together, with the congregation, we collected $393.38 in small change to help

provide the food pantry with options for perishable food items, etc. that cannot

otherwise be stored.

a huge success—through

decorating, music, leadership,

donations, etc. It truly was a

team effort. Everything went

smoothly, and everyone had

a great time! A VERY SPECIAL

JOB WELL DONE!!! We had

43 students register,

and 33 volunteers.

Although many volunteered

every day, some tag-teamed

(alternating), attending the

days their schedule would

allow. The participants enjoyed

an opening and closing

message each day, and will

share some of the songs on

Rally Day—Sept. 10th, during the service of worship.

Children also enjoyed a craft

project, bible story, science

experiment, games, and a

snack each day.

Dr. Kamphoefner is a professor of history at Texas A&M University. He grew up in the Defiance area, and “put up hay in

Daniel Boone’s backyard.” He earned his PhD at Mizzou. He has published widely

on German immigration and the Civil War in Missouri and elsewhere.

This program is in recognition of

Marthasville’s Bicentennial. It is free and

open to the public.

• A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front of the Sun and casts a shadow across Earth. It's

also known as an occultation. The reason solar eclipses happen is that the distance between the Sun and

the Earth is about 400 times the Moon's distance from the Sun and the Sun's diameter is approximately

400 times larger than the Moon's.

• What this means is that the Sun and the Moon both have a very similar size when viewed from Earth, so

when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, it blocks the light from reaching Earth.

Three main types of solar eclipse

Solar eclipse FACTS:

Facts about solar eclipses • Each year there are between 2 and 5 solar eclipses.

• The total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely obscures the Sun and leaves only the faint solar

corona, is known as a Totality.

• Total solar eclipses are rare, happening only once every 18 months.

• There is another type of solar eclipse, known as a hybrid eclipse, which shifts between a total and annular

eclipse depending on where you view it from on Earth. These are comparatively rare.

• The speed of the Moon as it moves across the Sun is approximately 2,250 km (1,398 miles) per hour.

• From either the North or South Pole, only a partial solar eclipse is able to be viewed.

• A total solar eclipse can last a maximum of 7 minutes and 30 seconds.

• 269 km is the maximum width of the path of totality.

• Almost identical eclipses occur after 18 years and 11 days – known as the Saros Cycle.

More Valuable Information: • To watch the ENTIRE eclipse, allow yourself at least 2 hours, from start to finish. Soooo worth it!!!

• The moment of totality will occur at approximately 1pm or so.

• Bring your lawn chairs and plan to watch from Noon to 2pm.

• MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOLAR VIEWING GLASSES OR #14 WELDING GLASSES!!!

• Also, see pages 11 and 12 of this newsletter for further Solar Eclipse information.

• Partial solar eclipse. This is when the Moon does not line up completely with the Sun, and so only

partially blocks the sunlight from reaching Earth.

• Annular solar eclipse. This is when the Moon and the Sun are both exactly in line but either the Moon is

further from Earth or the Earth is closer to the Sun. When this happens, the apparent size of the Moon is

smaller than that of the Sun and the Sun then appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the dark

disk of the Moon.

• Total solar eclipse. A total eclipse happens when the dark silhouette of the Moon completely covers the

intense bright light of the Sun. Only the much fainter solar corona is visible during a total eclipse.

any instant the Moon covers 100% of the Sun’s disk.

THIRD

CONTACT During a total

solar eclipse, the instant totality

ends.

FOURTH

CONTACT During a solar eclipse, the moment that the

disk of the Moon breaks contact with

the Sun—this moment marks the end of the eclipse.

• The BAILY'S BEADS EFFECT is a feature of total solar eclipses. ... The name is in honor of Francis Baily who provided an exact explanation of the phenomenon in 1836.

• The DIAMOND RING EFFECT is seen when only one BEAD is left; a shining diamond set in a bright ring around the lunar silhouette.

Watch for these effects! These mark the beginning and end of totality.

BAILY'S BEADS DIAMOND RING

On August 21, 2017, America will be treated to its first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in nearly 100 years.

That's why we're calling it the NATIONAL ECLIPSE. From Oregon to South Carolina, the eclipse will

trace a 67-mile-wide path across the country and millions of Americans will witness a once-in-a-lifetime

event as the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and day turns to night for up to almost three

minutes. There’s no denying the fact that a total solar eclipse is a relatively rare event for any given place.

So, for an area to get not one, but two, total solar eclipses in just seven years is a truly remarkable

occurrence! Parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky will be the nexus of the next two total solar eclipses to

occur in the U.S., on August 21, 2017, and April 8, 2024. Because the 2017 eclipse travels across the country

from northwest to southeast and the 2024 eclipse makes its way through the nation from southwest to

northeast, the two paths cross each other and create a zone of overlapping totality.

On April 8, 2024, the places to be to view the eclipse (that are closest to home) are Carbondale, Makanda, or

Marion, Illinois, Cape Girardeau or Farmington, Missouri, or Paducah, Kentucky.

Solar eclipse safety first!!!

HOW DO I LOOK AT THE SUN WITHOUT GOING BLIND?

This is a biggie! You CANNOT look at the sun while ANY PART of its bright disk is still visible. The moon does cover quite a bit of it during the partial phases leading up to

totality, but you MUST use special solar viewing glasses (also called "eclipse

glasses") to look at it during the partial phases. You MUST use these glasses to look at the sun during this time, and if you use them correctly (according to the instructions

printed on them), it's 100% safe. During the brief period of TOTALITY ONLY, when NO bright part of the sun is showing, you can look directly at the totally eclipsed sun with-

out any kind of filters, and you will not believe the sight. In fact, during TOTALITY ONLY, you can even look with binoculars if you want. The view is simply stunning, but IMMEDIATELY after totality, (as soon as you see the really bright diamond ring

effect again, when the bright part of the sun returns to view), the glasses have to come back on. To repeat: You MUST use the eclipse glasses whenever the sun is not TOTALLY eclipsed - whenever ANY bright piece of it is visible, no matter what "eclipse times" you may get off the internet, or out of any books or magazines. And you CAN look directly at the sun without the glasses ONLY during the very brief time when the sun is in total eclipse (that is, if you're in the path of totality!). It's only a minute or two at the most, but the memory of it will last your lifetime! *****************************************************************************
