WOMEN OF THE ELCA

A record number of thirty-five women enjoyed the

Christmas luncheon on the 12th of December, at The

Oak Hill Inn. Our guest speaker, Kathy Dewald,

shared stories and her collection of vintage

Christmas cards which were mailed between

servicemen and their families during WWII.

The In-Gathering offering of $222.00 was given to

the Santa Workshop at the Orwigsburg Food

Pantry. The following note was received:

"Dearest friends at St. Paul's - WOW!

You truly did help to make Christmas 2017 ‘over-

the-top’ with your generous gift of $222.00. We

were able to have many pantry children (we served

close to 40) pick out just the right gift for a family

member!

With loving gratitude, Susan McCarthy, Santa

Workshop Helper.”

Welcome to 2018! Oh, the possibilities of a

New Calendar Year! Even in the online

world, it’s nice to have a fresh start, a clean

slate, so to speak, to take a look at where

we started, how far we’ve come in a short

amount of time and where we hope to go

with our online ministry. Thanks to all of you

who have been sharing our videos and

posts online. We are up to 174 likes on our

Facebook page, and there are many new

things in the works which will be added to

our web-site in the next few months. Stay

tuned!

In a book I’ve been reading, The Social

Media Gospel, Meredith Gould wrote a

contemporary take on Saint Teresa of

Avila’s well-known prayer “Christ Has No

Body” that has given me much to

contemplate. I share it with you, so that you

may also take some time to consider this

simple, yet profound, message.

“Christ has no online presence but yours,

No blog, no Facebook page but yours,

Yours are the tweets through which love

touches this world,

Yours are the posts through which the

Gospel is shared,

Yours are the updates through which hope

is revealed.

Christ has no online presence but yours,

No blog, no Facebook page but yours.”

Flower & Bulletin Sponsorships 2018

For 2018 we have changed the procedure for

flower and bulletin dedications. We have prepared

a notebook with three pages, Altar Flowers,

Bulletins, and Chancel Flowers, for each

month. There is plenty of space for dedications,

and the notebook is bright green. You’ll find the

Sponsorship Book on the table below the bulletin

board in the Gathering Room. Please remember,

the book is first come, first served. If you would

like to be a sponsor on a date that is important to

you, please reserve your sponsorship early. Even

if you pay at the time of your dedication, please

don’t mark yourself paid.

A from Justin…

To all singers, ringers, instrumentalists, lectors,

bakers, worship team members, and everyone else

who helped with our 2017 Christmas Concert:

Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and

faithfulness to St. Paul’s! Despite being in the

midst of transition and some uncertainty, we were

able to proclaim that the light of Christ is still

shining at St. Paul’s. Many blessings in the New

Year!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When the song of the angels is stilled,

When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and the princes are home,

When the shepherds are back with their flocks,

The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost,

To heal the broken,

To feed the hungry,

To release the prisoner,

To rebuild the nations,

To bring peace among people,

To make music in the heart.

Howard Thurman.

An update from Church Council…

First, we know from our Constitution (Chapter 12, Section 2) that Council members must “be elected at a

legally called meeting of the congregation during the month of January.” We have therefore decided to hold

a brief meeting at 9:15 on 28 January 2018 for the Congregation to vote on the re-election of Scott Butler,

Chris Long, and Ron Rozansky and the election of Crystal Brensinger and Robert Schuld II. We will ask the

supply pastor who serves on 4 February to install all members.

Second, Council would like anyone who requests that an announcement be made at the beginning of the

Service to make sure that the announcement benefits the congregation. If it does, please place your

announcement in Justin’s mailbox by Thursday of the week in which you want it to be read.

And third, as you may know, Council Secretary Sue Schenck is our liaison with the Synod. She reports that

although Pastor Carl Shankweiler has had no success in finding an interim pastor for us, Laurie Christman,

who secures our supply pastors, is doing an excellent job. She had sent all of the contact information for the

pastors serving in December to Sue on 21 November. This included clergy for the Saturday night Services

and all three Christmas Eve Services!

Besides communicating with the supply pastors, Pastor Shankweiler has given Sue two additional tasks. The

first was to set up an online account for St. Paul’s to be used by the Call Committee—that has been done.

His second request, that she begin entering information on our Ministry Site Profile, is a work in progress.

In 2014, this document was called the Parish Study Report and contains facts and figures about our

congregation. It must be done again in 2018.

Thank you for your patience. Rest assured, Church Council wants to do all we can to keep things running,

and progressing, smoothly.

From the Call Committee…

CONGREGATIONAL SURVEY

Beginning next weekend, January 13 and 14, and continuing at all three services through the month of

January, the Call Committee will offer a survey to members regarding our future pastor at St. Paul’s. The

survey is anonymous, and the results are sent directly to the Synod, where they will be used to formulate our

next Parish Study Report. That Report will be made available to any Pastor who is interested in St. Paul’s. If

you are unable to attend Saturday or Sunday Worship, the Survey is included in this newsletter. You may

send the Survey back to St. Paul’s by mail or drop it in the office. (Your response will still remain

anonymous).Your feedback is very important to us. We sincerely hope that you will take the time to

complete this survey.
