OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

DEAR HOLY EASTER PEOPLE OF GOD:

Reflect on the edited gospel story:

Two disciples were on their way to Emmaus. Jesus walked with them, but they didn’t recognize him. Jesus asked, “What are you discussing?” One replied, “Are you the only visitor who does not know of the things that have taken place in Jerusalem? And Jesus told them everything. They asked, “Stay with us!” And Jesus stayed; while at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them; their eyes were opened, they recognized him, but he vanished from their eyes. They said, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us?” They returned to Jerusalem and they said to the other disciples, “The Lord has truly been raised.” They recognized him on the breaking of the bread! (LK 24:13-35)

The disciples’ fear made them abandoned their mission. But Jesus – fulfilling his promise to be “with them until the end of time” appeared at the right time and right place to redirect their hearts. They regained their mission’s focus; went back to Jerusalem; and joined with the other disciples. Hereon, they become vibrant ambassadors and story-tellers of the resurrection.

We’re like the disciples. COVID-19 paralyzed us. We yielded to fear and panic. But the LENTEN SEASON, reconstructed our hearts to become fountain of hope. Henceforth, God didn’t abandon us. And God is at our side, we’re able to walk through the life-threating signs of COVID-19:

We practiced “social distancing:” we realized that six feet apart from each other is better than we’re six feet under! We decided to “stay home:” we learned that “staying home” saves lives! We discov-ered that the “home” is our sanctuary; that the family is a small faith community; it’s a domestic Church.

We resented Churches’ closing. It deprived us of the Eucharist. But deprivation strengthened our faith as we reflect, “absence makes the heart grow fonder!” We hated “lockdown:” yet it animated us to discover a dynamic spiritual experience - we’re given the luxury to LOCK ourselves in the presence of God, and get DOWN on our knees to pray individually and as a family.

Remember, COVID-19 has an expiration date, but the Risen Christ’s healing grace never ends. So, today, the Risen Christ walks with us in our Emmaus Easter Season journey. Hence, with hope and faith, we pray:

“Risen Christ, promise us your healing love: for better or for worse and in sickness and in health

so long shall we live. Amen.”

Easter blessings of health and life!

BLESSINGS

3rd Sunday of Easter

You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.

— Acts 2:28

Saint CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380)

Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Grego-ry XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Young-est of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contem-plative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contempla-tion,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for con-verting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church. .

STAY WITH US, LORD

Walk with us, Lord, along the road of resurrection! Explain for us, so slow to believe, the things that Scripture says of you. Break the bread of the Eucharist with us whenever we share our lives with our brothers and sisters. Stay with us each time night approaches and the daylight fades in our hearts!

GOD’S PLAN

Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God.

Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread.

Evangelization & Faith Page 6

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus in today’s reading came to know the Lord in the “breaking of the bread”—the Eucharist. We can see that their encounter with Jesus that day parallels the way Jesus comes to meet us in every Mass.

First, just as Jesus spoke to the two disciples on the road about the Scriptures, so Jesus speaks to us through the Scriptures in the Liturgy of the Word. Then, just as Jesus explained the Scriptures to the disciples on the road, so do we have those words interpreted for us by the priest so that we can begin to understand what they mean for our lives. The first half of the Mass, like the first half of the journey to Emmaus, focuses on

the Word of God.

Then, as we experience the “breaking of the bread,” Jesus gives us his very self, his Body and Blood. At that moment, our eyes can be opened and we are able to see Jesus in our midst. When we receive the Lord with an open and recep-tive heart, we know that he is alive . . . and with us. We begin to have a glimpse into the awe-some plan of God for our own lives. The second half of the Mass, like the second half of the Emmaus story, centers on meeting and recognizing Jesus.

Finally, like the disciples who run back to Jerusalem to share the Good News, we too, at the end of every Mass, are com-missioned to be ambassadors of Christ who has revealed him-self in the Word and in the Eucharist.

Reflect on these following ques-tions with a friend or family:

The story of the two disciples

meeting Jesus gives us a template for how we encoun-ter Jesus in the Mass...

• How does the Liturgy of the Word begin our meet-ing with Jesus?

• How is the Liturgy of the Word in the Mass like the experience of the disci-ples on the way to Emmaus?

P RAYER: Imagine that you are in the inn with the two

disciples. During the meal, the man who has been talking to you all day takes bread and blesses it. In that moment, you realize that he is Jesus. He is alive! The women were right—Jesus has been raised from the dead. He disappears, but you think: “Was not my heart burn-ing within me while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” How do you recognize Jesus today in the Scriptures? In the Eucharist?

R ESOLUTION: As you read Scripture and receive Holy

Communion this week, be open to the ways Jesus reveals him-self to you.
