Name badges help make St Paul’s an

inclusive community. If you need a new

name badge, fill in the form inside the

pew sheet, send it to the parish office,

and one will be made and left in church

for you.

Toilets are available at the entrance to

the parish hall, which is located behind

the church.

First aid kits are located on the wall of

the kitchen in the Large Hall behind

the church and in the choir vestry.

Ask a member of the clergy or anyone

who’s wearing a name badge. We’re

here to help.

As you take your place in your pew,

please make yourself aware of the route

to the nearest emergency exit. Should

there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right,

and assemble by the roundabout on

Burwood Road.

People needing wheelchair access can

enter St Paul’s most conveniently by the

door at the base of the belltower.

Please turn your mobile phone off or on

to silent before the service starts. It’ll

save you much embarrassment later on.

Children are welcome in church at any

service. There is a selection of

children’s books and toys at the back of

the church near the font and there are

also kids’ activity sheets and pencils

available at the back of the church

where the pew sheets and prayer books

are.

Children’s Church runs during Term

Time. Meet at the back of the church at

the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist.

Please feel free to bring your children to

the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to

receive Communion if they have been

admitted to the sacrament.

Please do not take photos

inside the church or during the services

of worship without permission.

We warmly welcome the Members

of the Order of St. John and the

Members of St. John Ambulance

Australia with us today.

We also welcome The Right

Reverend Bishop Richard Hurford,

OAM, KStJ, Sub-Prelate of the Priory

of Australia and NSW State

Chaplain.

We have been successful with the

grant application to repair the

external stonework and roofing at

St. Paul's having been awarded

$43,732.00.

This is wonderful news and, along

with funds from the National Trust

Account (which can be used for this

project), we should be able to get

all of the work done whilst we have

the scaffolding in place.

Depending on the cost of the work,

it would be good to get the cracked

stonework on the pillars on the top

of the Bell Tower repaired, the two

Celtic Crosses on either end of the

Church repaired, re-mortar the

exterior where needed, re-fix the

stone block that has fallen off the

North West Entrance, and repair the

stone blocks that have been

displaced high on the West Wall.

If the funds are adequate we could

replace the gullies on the roof and

repair the wooden slats on the

vents in the roof.

I thank God for all of these signs of

new life that God is breathing into

St Paul's.

I received an email from Serge Medina informing me that he has

resigned as a member of the Parish Council due to work commitments.

Given that Serge was one of my appointments to the Parish Council we

don't need to have another election as I can simply appoint another per-

son to fill this vacancy.

Last Tuesday's recital was amazing – the quality of the repertoire was

exceptional as was the delivery. It was a privilege to be able to listen to

such fine music making. Thank you for your kindness in coming to play

for us , Maddy and John, and for organizing the recital, Sheryl. I am most

grateful to each of you for your kindness.

Thank you, Jane and Bob and Mary and Annette for yet another

magnificent offering for our refreshments after the recital. I am truly

grateful to you for the time and creative endeavour that you devote to

preparing our refreshments.

Thank you, Rosemary and Caroline, for all that you do behind the scenes

to make sure that everything was well organized. I appreciate all that you

do greatly.

All in all, it was a great day. Thank you everyone.

– Fr James

Another yet outstanding recital from Maddy Hallworth exciting beautiful

tone and magnificently supported by the accompanist John Martin.

Thank you to you both.

– Sheryl Southwood

Director of Music

Paul and Yolande Philips would like

to express their thanks to Father

James, Father Michael, Rosemary,

Caroline and the parishioners of

St Paul’s for their prayers and

loving support during Paul’s recent

time in hospital and rehabilitation

– it has been much appreciated.

Over the years the parish has

benefitted from the generosity of

parishioners, not only when they

have been active members of the

parish, but also at the time of their

death. Parishioners are invited to

remember the parish in their wills

by making a bequest as a thank

offering to God and to ensure that

generations to come will enjoy

worship and fellowship in well

maintained buildings.

Those wishing to make a bequest

are invited to do so using these or

a similar form of words: "I

bequeath the sum of $............ to

the Rector and Wardens of the

Anglican Parish of St Paul,

Burwood, to be used at their

absolute discretion for the

charitable purposes of the parish."

If you would like to make a

donation to the Parish for the

upkeep and maintenance of the

Heritage building it can be done

through the National Trust.

Our warmest best wishes to Mrs

Leonie Sinclair who is celebrating

a birthday at this time – we wish

her many happy returns and every

blessing for much happiness and

good health.

Next Thursday night we are making our first Life Jacket run for the year.

The nights are long and despite some milder weather this year there

have been some very cold and damp nights already.

We have had some very generous donations already and to each of you

we thank you for your thoughtfulness.

But we need 150 blankets and 150 jackets and we were well short.

Remember Peter Freedman, from RØDE who provided and installed our

wonderful sound system, well he has donated the balance; 100 blankets

and 100 jackets, some beanies and gloves. Along with these came some

lanterns that when the power runs out can be charged by hand. Thank

you Peter for your generosity. Thanks to you there will be some warmer

people this winter.

From left to right :

Bob Wood, Peter Freedman

& Fr James Collins

Thank you to the parishioners who paid to have the piano in the church

tuned.

It sounded beautiful for Maddy and John’s Recital on Tuesday.

REVEREND Canon Katherine Bowyer will become the first female Anglican

Dean of Newcastle and the first person born in the diocese to be elected to

the position.

Acting-Bishop of Newcastle Dr Peter Stuart announced the historic appoint-

ment on Sunday, revealing Canon Bowyer had unanimously been accepted

as the next Dean and Parish Priest of Christ Church Cathedral.

“Katherine is a highly experienced priest who loves the cathedral, its music

and its many ministries,” Dr Stuart said.

Canon Bowyer will replace outgoing Dean Stephen Williams, who will

conclude his ministry in August before retiring in October.

Canon Bowyer’s recent ministries have been as the Rector of Cardiff and the

Director of Formation, where she has been responsible for training future

priests.

“Katherine is a terrific preacher who has immense pastoral and liturgical

gifts,” Dr Stuart said.

“She has contributed greatly to diocesan governance.

“In her various ministries she has worked to promote a healthy diocesan

culture.”

Canon Bowyer said she was immensely proud to become the first female

Dean of Christ Church Cathedral.

“I'm very honoured,” Canon Bowyer told the Newcastle Herald.

“I was very humbled and surprised when Bishop Peter called me. “This

year we're celebrating 30 years of women as ordained in the Diocese of

Newcastle in clergy leadership and its significant, I think.

“It's a great privilege to be able to be called to this position in this year.

“I love Newcastle. “It’s a great city.

“My parents grew up on Carrington and the Cathedral has always been at

the centre of the city.

“It's the centre of my life, I guess.”

Canon Bowyer said she was looking forward to working with the many

ministries of Christ Church Cathedral, including music, the Newcastle

Grammar School as well as the community.

Canon Bowyer will begin her ministry at Christ Church Cathedral with a

commissioning service on October 4.

Restoration of the interior of the Edmund Blacket church by stripping

out the existing lighting, cooling and heating systems; cleaning, repair-

ing and repainting the timber ceiling and roof structure; cleaning and

repairing the stained glass windows and sandstone walls and installing

new lighting.

St Paul’s Anglican Church in Burwood is a beautiful example of

Edmund Blacket’s suburban church, however years of use had cause its

brilliance to dull. A series of lighting, heating and cooling upgrades

had resulted in the space becoming cluttered with detracting

elements. The timber ceiling and roof structure had not been cleaned

or painted in a number of decades, and the paint had faded and

become covered in dust and soot and appeared to be a consistent dull

brown. The existing lighting was limited, only providing

functional light to the users of the church. The sandstone walls were

dirty and had areas of hard mortar repair. The stained glass windows

were dirty and some were damaged.

The congregation at St Paul’s felt that it was important to restore the

space to its former glory. They began to raised money through the

National Trust and applied to the NSW Government Office of the

Environment and Heritage for a grant to do the work. Paul Davies Pty Ltd

was appointed to provide heritage advice and assist the congregation in

achieving their goal. Illuminated Design was employed to design the

new lighting. The Hannam Group was contracted to carry out the works.

Based on their previous knowledge acquired through their involvement

in numerous church restoration projects across Australia , including the

restoration works at Edmund Blacket’s St Andrews Cathedral, Sydney

and St Mark’s Darling Point; and further site investigation Paul Davies Pty

Ltd developed a schedule of works and selected the paint colours for the

ceiling and roof structure.

Illuminated Design, using their extensive lighting experience,

particularly their involvement in the lighting of St Davids Cathedral,

Hobart, developed a lighting design which provided light for the

congregation, illuminated the roof volume and important elements of the

building, and created event lighting for concerts and performances.

The Hannam Group coordinated a group of skilled subcontractors

including Heritage Stonemasonary, who worked to lovingly bring the

church interior to its current magnificence.

The work was not easy. The 12m internal height of the church, and the

requirement that to clean, sand and paint the entire internal roof struc-

ture, meant that the whole volume had to be completely scaffolded with

5 levels of scaffolding. The cleaning and controlling of possibly 100 years

of dust was difficult, with buckets of water having to be carried up and

down 12m during a hot summer with no means of cooling. The original

Blacket painting design involved painting the complex roof structure

brown and then cutting in red highlights on every chamfer of every

beam which the painters painstakings replicated. The electrical power of

all the lighting had to be carefully concealed in the structure so that the

uplighting would not highlight it, the pendant lights had to be lined up

across the whole volume of the church, the uplights carefully adjusted

to ensure even lighting across the ceiling and the spots lights adjusted

to provide the all important highlighting of significant elements. The

hard mortar patching had be carefully scrapped out and the lime

mortar restored.

The outcome of all this work is a delightful space. Edmund Blacket’s

original design is now superbly celebrated in colour and light.

Worked on the project:

Paul Davies Pty Ltd, The Hannam Group, Illuminated Design

What the Judges said:

“Careful, thorough and a great result. This Edmund Blacket church is a

joy.”

We are conscious of conflict in Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Middle

East and we pray for peace and goodwill amongst all people and that the

persecution of Christians might cease.

God of the nations, whose kingdom rules over all, have mercy on our

broken and divided world.

Shed abroad your peace in the hearts

of all people and banish from them

the spirit that makes for war;

that all races and people may learn to live

as members of one family

and in obedience to your laws;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Various colours available with ‘St

Paul’s Burwood’ and ‘May God’s light

shine on you’ is engraved on each

one.

These are available at the Trading ta-

ble after the 9.30am service on

Sundays.

Cost: $3 each or 2 for $5

The money raised will be used to buy the next batch of torches to be

distributed to the homeless with the next Life Jacket run.

Awakening the Sacred through Literature and the Arts Conference

Friday 7 July - Saturday 8 July 2017 at the Australian Catholic

University situated at 25A Barker Road, Strathfield NSW 2135

Awakening the Sacred is the fifth in a series of conferences presented

by The Sacred in Literature and the Arts (SLA), a community of

interest that brings Australian and international writers, artists,

musicians, academics, religious and members of the general

public together to explore the interplay between the arts and the

sacred.

The 2017 conference asks how literature and the arts can help to

awaken an experience of the sacred: do the arts provide a common

ground for people of different faiths and no faith to open themselves

to the ineffable? There will be a special focus on the meditative

traditions and practices of East and West and the ways in which they

are often nurtured and supported by literature and the arts. The

conference is held in conjunction

with The World Community of Christian Meditation.

The conference features a wide range of speakers, including

Laurence Freeman OSB, Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr, Sasha Grishin,

Rachael Kohn, Maeve Heaney, David Tacey,Imam Afroz Ali, artists

Michael Galovic and Chelsea Adkins, and the ACU Choir. The

conference will also feature an exhibition of traditional icons and

contemporary religious art by Michael Galovic, alongside works by

Chelsea Adkins.

Registrations for the Meditation event and the SLA conference are

open from 2.00-3.15 pm on Friday 7 July.

Sessions begin at 3.15 and run till 9.15pm on Friday and from

8.30- 5.00 pm on Saturday 8 July.

Unlike the most recent conferences, there will not be a call for papers.

Inquiries can be addressed to Michael Griffith at

[email protected] or

Donna Mulhearn at [email protected].

Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our

Services. In James 5: 14-15 we read:

14 Are any among you sick? They should call for

the elders of the church and have them pray over

them, anointing them with oil in the name of the

Lord 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and

the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has

committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV)

If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed

for then please ask one of the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anoint-

ed during any of our Services.

The Wednesday mid-week Eucharist includes prayers for healing every

week.

Sunday 18 June 2017

Genesis 21.8-21; Psalm 86.1-10, 16-17;

Romans 6.1-11; Matthew 10.24-39.

Jesus shows us that God’s mission is to claim

the priority in our lives, even above family

loyalty: ‘I have come to set a man against his

father, and a daughter against her mother’, he says. He then goes on to

say that our lives can only find their ultimate meaning in him because

‘those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my

sake will find it’. May we never be afraid of dying to self so that we may

be born anew, taking our part in the mystery of God’s mission to the

world.

Pray that nothing will deter us from making God our first priority.

Give thanks for those who engage in the mystery of God’s mission

both here and overseas.

In love and charity please

remember the recently departed,

God may grant them a place of

refreshment, light and peace.

Pray, too, for Fr John Maxwell Kohler

& Brenda Phillips and for any others

whose year’s mind falls around this

time.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord,

and let light perpetual shine upon

them!
