Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9:18-24.

Evangelio según San Lucas 9,18-24.

U n día en que Jesús oraba a solas y sus discípulos estaban con él, les preguntó:

"¿Quién dice la gente que soy yo?".

Ellos le respondieron: "Unos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista; otros, Elías; y otros, al-

guno de los antiguos profetas que ha resucitado".

"Pero ustedes, les preguntó, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?". Pedro, tomando la palabra,

respondió: "Tú eres el Mesías de Dios".

Y él les ordenó terminantemente que no lo dijeran a nadie.

"El Hijo del hombre, les dijo, debe sufrir mucho, ser rechazado por los ancianos, los

sumos sacerdotes y los escribas, ser condenado a muerte y resucitar al tercer día".

Después dijo a todos: "El que quiera venir detrás de mí, que renuncie a sí mismo, que

cargue con su cruz cada día y me siga.

Porque el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá y el que pierda su vida por mí, la salva-

rá.

O nce when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he

asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"

They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets

has arisen.'"

Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Messiah of

God."

He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.

He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief

priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised."

Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up

his cross daily and follow me.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will

save it.

L as oraciones no son palabras mági-

cas y la palabra ‘Padre’, Jesús la pronun-

cia siempre en los momentos emocio-

nantes de su vida. No debemos pensar

que las oraciones sean ‘palabras mágicas’,

y por lo tanto no hagamos como los pa-

ganos.

Lo indicó el Santo Padre en su homilía de

la misa matutina en la residencia Santa

Marta, comentando el Evangelio de hoy,

en el cual Jesús enseña la oración del

‘Padre Nuestro’ a sus discípulos, para

indicar el valor de la oración en la vida

del cristiano. O sea que el espacio de

una oración entra en la palabra ‘Padre’.

Un Padre que “sabe lo que necesitamos

antes que se lo pidamos”. Un Padre que

“nos escucha escondido, en el secreto

como Él, Jesús nos da el consejo de rezar

en secreto”, dijo.

Un Padre “que nos da la identidad de

hijos, y cuando digo ‘Padre’, llego a las

raíces de mi identidad: mi identidad cris-

tiana es ser hijo y esta es una gracia del

Espíritu. Nadie puede decir ‘Padre’, sin la

gracia del Espíritu”.

“’Padre’ es una palabra que Jesús usaba

en los momentos más emocionantes,

cuando estaba lleno de alegría, de emo-

ción: ‘Padre te alabo, porque tú revelas

estas cosas a los niños’; o llorando delan-

te a la tumba de su amigo Lázaro: ‘Padre,

te doy gracias porque me has escucha-

do’”.

El Papa señaló también: “Sin sentirse hijo,

sin decir ‘Padre’, nuestra oración es pa-

gana, es una oración de palabras”. Y re-

zarle al Padre es la piedra angular, Èl co-

noce nuestras necesidades. Seguramente

podemos rezar a la Virgen, a los ángeles

y a los santos, pero “la piedra angular de

la oración es ‘Padre’”. Y si no somos ca-

paces de iniciar la oración de esta mane-

ra, “la oración no va bien”.

Este es el espacio de la oración cristiana:

‘Padre’. “Y después rezamos a todos los

santos y ángeles, hacemos las procesio-

nes y las peregrinaciones. Todo es her-

moso, pero siempre iniciando con

‘Padre’ y con la conciencia de que somos

hijos”.

El Santo Padre llevó su pensamiento a la

parte de la oración del ‘Padre Nuestro’,

en donde Jesús se refiere al perdón del

prójimo como Dios nos perdona a noso-

tros. “Si el espacio de la oración es decir

‘Padre’, la atmósfera de la oración es

decir ‘nuestro’: somos hermanos somos

familia”. Y recordó lo que sucedió con

Caín que odió al hijo del Padre, odió a su

hermano. Porque el ‘Padre’ nos da la

identidad de familia.

Por esto –aseguró Francisco– es tan im-

portante la capacidad de perdón, de olvi-

dar las ofensas, esa buena costumbre:

‘Pero dejemos pasar… que el Señor haga

Él’, y no llevar rencor, resentimiento ni

deseo de venganza…”.

“Rezar al Padre perdonando a todos,

olvidando las ofensas, es la mejor ora-

ción que uno pueda hacer”. Y es bueno

que algunas veces hagamos un examen

de conciencia sobre esto. Para mí Dios

es Padre, ¿yo lo siento como un Padre? Y

si no lo siento así, debo pedir al Espíritu

Santo que me enseñe a sentirlo así, por-

que “el ‘Padre Nuestro’ nos da la identi-

dad de hijos y de familia para ir juntos en

la vida”.

P ope Francis says that bringing beau-

ty and joy to a sometimes gloomy and

sad world is also an act of mercy.

The Pope affirmed this today when he

gave a brief address for the Jubilee

to itinerant artists — from puppeteers

and street musicians to open-air painters

and circus performers.

The Holy Father told the musicians and

performers that they are “‘artisans’ of

celebration, of wonder, of the beautiful.”

“With these qualities you enrich the soci-

ety of the whole world,” he said, adding:

“You do so through exhibitions that have

the capacity to elevate the spirit, to show

the audacity of particularly demanding

exercises, to fascinate with the wonder of

the beautiful and of proposing occasions

of healthy entertainment.”

The Pope said the artists and performers

are in fact a “special resource” in evan-

gelization: “With your continuous mov-

ing, you can bring to all the love of God,

His embrace and His mercy. You can be

an itinerant Christian community, wit-

nesses of Christ who is always on the

way to encounter those who are most

distant.”

The Holy Father also congratulated them

for various initiatives in the Year of Mer-

cy to make their entertainment programs

available to the poor, prisoners, and other

needy groups. “This too is mercy: to sow

beauty and joy in a world that at times is

gloomy and sad,” he said.

The Pontiff also recognized the difficul-

ties these groups have in participating in

parish life. “Therefore, I invite you to

take care of your faith,” he said. “Take

every occasion to approach the Sacra-

ments. Transmit to your children the love

of God and of neighbor.”

He also called on particular Churches to

be attentive to the needs of these and

similarly mobile groups.

“As you know, the Church is concerned

about the problems that accompany your

itinerant life, and she wishes to help you

to eliminate the prejudices that some-

times keep you somewhat on the mar-

gins,” he assured. “May you always be

able to carry out your work with love and

care, confident that God accompanies

you with His Providence, generous in the

works of charity, willing to offer the re-

sources and the genius of your arts and

of your professions.”
