Bring forth the royal diadem And crown Him Lord of all. Crown Him, ye martyrs of our God, Who from His altar call; Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod And crown Him Lord of all. Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod And crown Him Lord of all. Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, Ye ransomed from the fall, Hail Him who saves you by His grace And crown Him Lord of all. P: The Lord lifts up the | humble;* he casts the wicked | to the ground. Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises | to our God;* for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is | fitting. C: He determines the number | of the stars;* he gives to all of | them their names. P: Great is our Lord, and abun- | dant in power;* his understanding is beyond | measure. Old Testament Reading: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? As I live, declares the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins shall die. . . . “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. Epistle: Philippians 2:1-4, 14-18 If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. . . . Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse: Page 156

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 21st chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord. (sung) Holy Gospel: Matthew 21:23-27 When [Jesus] entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ. (sung) Sit Hymn of the Day:

O God, my faithful God, True fountain ever flowing, Without whom nothing is, All perfect gifts bestowing: Give me a healthy frame, And may I have within A conscience free from blame, A soul unstained by sin. Grant me the strength to do With ready heart and willing Whatever You command, My calling here fulfilling; That I do what I should While trusting You to bless The outcome for my good, For You must give success. Keep me from saying words That later need recalling; Guard me lest idle speech May from my lips be falling; But when within my place I must and ought to speak, Then to my words give grace Lest I offend the weak.

Lord, let me win my foes With kindly words and actions, And let me find good friends For counsel and correction. Help me, as You have taught, To love both great and small And by Your Spirit’s might To live in peace with all. Let me depart this life Confiding in my Savior; By grace receive my soul That it may live forever; And let my body have A quiet resting place Within a Christian grave; And let it sleep in peace. And on that final day When all the dead are waking, Stretch out Your mighty hand, My deathly slumber breaking. Then let me hear Your voice, Redeem this earthly frame, And bid me to rejoice With those who love Your name.

Thee will I love, my strength, my tower; Thee will I love, my hope, my joy. Thee will I love with all my power, With ardor time shall ne’er destroy. Thee will I love, O Light divine, So long as life is mine.

Thee will I love, my life, my Savior, Who art my best and truest friend. Thee will I love and praise forever, For never shall Thy kindness end. Thee will I love with all my heart— Thou my Redeemer art! I thank Thee, Jesus, Sun from heaven, Whose radiance hath brought light to me; I thank Thee, who hast richly given All that could make me glad and free; I thank Thee that my soul is healed By what Thy lips revealed. O keep me watchful, then, and humble; Permit me nevermore to stray. Uphold me when my feet would stumble, And keep me on the narrow way. Fill all my nature with Thy light, O Radiance strong and bright! Thee will I love, my crown of gladness; Thee will I love, my God and Lord, Amid the darkest depths of sadness, And not for hope of high reward, For Thine own sake, O Light divine, So long as life is mine.

Distribution Hymn: Come, Let Us Join Our Cheerful Songs LSB 812

Come, let us join our cheerful songs With angels round the throne; Ten thousand thousand are their tongues, But all their joys are one. “Worthy the Lamb that died,” they cry, “To be exalted thus!” “Worthy the Lamb,” our lips reply, “For He was slain for us!” Jesus is worthy to receive Honor and pow’r divine; And blessings more than we can give Be, Lord, forever Thine. Let all creation join in one To bless the sacred name Of Him who sits upon the throne And to adore the Lamb.

IT IS WITH A HEAVY HEART that Christopher and Charline Fast have made the

decision to cancel the Affirmation of Holy Matrimony service that was going to be held on October 24th at SPL due to the increase of Covid-19 cases in Fairmont. Weddings can be places where covid is easily spread, so they made this decision for the sake of the safety of their friends and community. Please stay safe and stay well.

DEAR MEMBERS OF SPL CONGREGATION, as you have now heard,

Christopher and Charline Fast have cancelled their Affirmation of Holy Matrimony Service due to Covid. Any of you who would like to join the Committee in recognizing their marriage are invited to place a monetary contribution in an envelope and deposit it in the offering box affixed to the wall inside the south door of the church. Our group will enter names of all who participate on a wedding card and present them with the proceeds that are gathered. Be sure to include your name on the envelope so that we can inform them of your participation. Please do this by October 16th. Thank you. The

“BUT IF WE SAY, ‘FROM MAN,’ we are afraid of the crowd …” Foolish Pharisees!

They fear men more than they fear God, and so they miss out on the great blessing of knowing Jesus and His love. All our sins are like this: we fear something more than we fear God. And how foolish that is! Just think of the blessings we miss out on whenever we place our fear or trust in something other than God. (Matthew 21:26)

SPL WILL BE HOSTING their own Walkathon for Nonpublic Education on Friday,

October 2nd from 12:30-2:30 p.m. 100% of the money raised will go into growing and developing Mr. Kutch’s music and art programs to buy both band/classroom instruments; and some new art supplies. Helpers needed to stand on the corners of the city block to monitor the walkers, count student laps, help with the snack table, music, and other fun activities. To volunteer, call the school office and leave your name and number, or contact Erin Simpson at 236-0175 or [email protected]. If you aren’t able to help, but want to show your support, feel free to join us for some laps or leave a cash donation (checks made out to SPL PTL) at the school office. Show up anytime between 12:30-2:30 and walk a lap with the students!
