Hymn of Invocation: Eternal Father, Strong to Save LSB 717 Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to Thee
For those in peril on the sea.
O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain,
O’er which our traffic runs amain
By mountain pass or valley low;
Wherever, Lord, Thy people go,
Protect them by Thy guarding hand
From ev’ry peril on the land.
O Spirit, whom the Father sent
To spread abroad the firmament;
O Wind of heaven, by Thy might
Save all who dare the eagle’s flight,
And keep them by Thy watchful care
From ev’ry peril in the air.
O Trinity of love and pow’r,
Our people shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad praise from air and land and sea.

Old Testament Reading: Zechariah 9:9-12
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off
the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow
shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from
sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because
of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the
waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare
that I will restore to you double.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Epistle: Romans 7:14-25a
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. I do
not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very
thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is
good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I
know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire
to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I
want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do
not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.
For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members
another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to
the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will
deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our
Lord!
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 11th chapter.
C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. (sung)
Holy Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that
you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed
them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things
have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except
the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom
the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. (sung) Nicene Creed: Page 191

Hymn of the Day: Come unto Me, Ye Weary LSB 684 “Come unto Me, ye weary,
And I will give you rest.”
O blessèd voice of Jesus,
Which comes to hearts oppressed!
It tells of benediction,
Of pardon, grace, and peace,
Of joy that hath no ending,
Of love that cannot cease.
“Come unto Me, ye wand’rers,
And I will give you light.”
O loving voice of Jesus,
Which comes to cheer the night!
Our hearts were filled with sadness,
And we had lost our way;
But Thou hast brought us gladness
And songs at break of day.
“Come unto Me, ye fainting,
And I will give you life.”
O cheering voice of Jesus,
Which comes to aid our strife!
The foe is stern and eager,
The fight is fierce and long;
But Thou hast made us mighty
And stronger than the strong.
“And whosoever cometh,
I will not cast him out.”
O patient love of Jesus,
Which drives away our doubt,
Which, though we be unworthy
Of love so great and free,
Invites us very sinners
To come, dear Lord, to Thee!

Distribution Hymn: Just as I Am, without One Plea LSB 570 Just as I am, without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, though tossed about
With many_a conflict, many_a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
Just as I am; Thy love unknown
Has broken ev’ry barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Distribution Hymn: Before You, Lord, We Bow LSB 966 Before You, Lord, we bow,
Our God who reigns above
And rules the world below,
Boundless in pow’r and love.
Our thanks we bring
In joy and praise,
Our hearts we raise
To You, our King!
Page 8
The nation You have blest
May well Your love declare,
From foes and fears at rest,
Protected by Your care.
For this bright day,
For this fair land—
Gifts of Your hand—
Our thanks we pay.
May ev’ry mountain height,
Each vale and forest green,
Shine in Your Word’s pure light,
And its rich fruits be seen!
May ev’ry tongue
Be tuned to praise
And join to raise
A grateful song.
Earth, hear your Maker’s voice;
Your great Redeemer own;
Believe, obey, rejoice,
And worship Him alone.
Cast down your pride,
Your sin deplore,
And bow before
The Crucified.
And when in pow’r He comes,
Oh, may our native land
From all its rending tombs
Send forth a glorious band,
A countless throng,
With joy to sing
To heav’n’s high King
Salvation’s song!

Firm may she ever stand
Through storm and night.
When the wild tempests rave,
Ruler of wind and wave,
Do Thou our country save
By Thy great might.
So shall our prayers arise
To God above the skies;
On Him we wait.
Thou who art ever nigh,
Guarding with watchful eye,
To Thee aloud we cry:
God save the state!

additional ways to keep you connected with your church family during this
pandemic.

SUNDAY’S HYMNS BIBLE CLASS—The Adult Bible Class Sunday,
July 5, will study the hymns we are singing in church this weekend: LSB 717
Eternal Father Strong to Save; 570 Just As I Am, without One Plea; 966 Before
You, Lord, We Bow; and 965 God Bless Our Native Land. A link to the handout
can be found on the SPL website at https://www.splfairmont.org/
uploads/1/3/7/6/13768230/hymns_bible_study_2020.pdf. We will be following
this format for a couple weeks while Pastor Bertram prepares a longer study.
PASTORS WEARING MASKS during the service has made it hard for
some in church to hear them clearly. Some adjustments to the sound system
have been made to improve the sound quality. Please be patient as we try to
adapt to this unprecedented situation. If you are experiencing hearing loss and
need a hearing aid (or use one currently), the nave of the church (the two large
sections of pews) have a “hearing loop” which broadcasts the sound from the
microphones directly into the T-coil technology of hearing aids. SPL members
with very significant hearing loss are able to hear clearly using this technology.
PASTOR BERTRAM’S 6TH-7TH GRADE (2019-2020)
CATECHISM CLASS (non-SPL School) will meet “socially distanced” in
the church basement from 3:30-5:00 p.m. on July 8th. Bring your Bible and
Luther’s Small Catechism with Explanation.
WE APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS in leaving the close
parking spots available for the people that really need them. Thank you!
CONFIRMATION DAY: The Rite of Confirmation will be held Sunday,
July 12th at 10:30 a.m. This service was added to accommodate especially the
families of the confirmands; the 9:00 a.m. Service will happen as usual, all with
proper social distancing protocol observed.
KSUM RADIO BROADCAST SPONSORS now being accepted.
Cost—$40, payable to St. Paul LWML. Available: Oct. 4, 11, 18. To reserve,
contact [email protected] or 238-9491.
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS for July, please take note: This
year our procedure has changed. ONE: Please use the east main entrance door to
Lakeview Methodist Home to pick up and return your coolers/clipboards, as the
west entrance is closed due to construction. TWO: Due to the COVID-19 issues,
we have been assigned only two routes. PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOU PICK
UP YOUR CORRECT ASSIGNED ROUTE. Drivers are not required to wear
masks or gloves; that is totally up to you. Recipients of these meals understand our “social distance policy” and do their best to follow the guidelines. Thank
you for your help in distributing these meals to our neighbors in town. If you
have any questions, please call Pat Hall at 236-4921.

IF YOU DESIRE to be included in the prayers of the church for your
birthday, anniversary, or any other special occasion, please notify one of the
pastors or the church office. (To be included in the Messenger, please notify

SPL & MLHS ARE PART of the Coca-Cola Give program. This opens up
new funding opportunities to help the learning environments for our students.
The best part? Donations don’t come out of your own pocket. When you make
Coca-Cola purchases, you simply enter the product codes here: https://us.coca-
cola.com/give/schools/ and then search by zip code (56031-Fairmont; 56075-
Northrop), select SPL or MLHS from the list, and scan or enter product codes
from participating Coca-Cola products. Each product code scanned or entered
on their website has a unique donation value. To learn more, go to https://
us.coca-cola.com/give/. Thank you!
THOSE LIVING ALONE are often lonely, but in this current situation of
“stay at home” they are even more isolated than usual. Please consider calling
single people, widows, and widowers on the phone to ask how they are doing.
Some people don’t want to burden their adult children with their problems, but
are willing to share their concerns with their friends. If you think someone is
spiritually troubled, please let a pastor know. If you think someone is at risk
emotionally, please encourage that person to get professional help. Christians
are called together as the body of Christ, but we are mostly separated right now
so we need to reach out to help and support each other.
“COME TO ME, ALL WHO LABOR and are heavy laden, and I will
give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Jesus has come to do the work so that we might
have rest from burdens and labors we are not capable of bearing. He frees us
from sin, death, and the demands of the Law. In that peace and rest of Jesus we
find a new purpose. His light yoke, which is no burden to bear, is a joy.
TLCARE MINISTRY IN ROCHESTER, MN—TLCare ministry
desires to serve those needing assistance while in Rochester receiving medical
care through intercessory prayer, either phone or face-to-face contact with one
of their caring members, a ride to church and/or one of their Bible studies.
Beyond that, they try to tailor their ministry to the unique needs of their guests
and feel immensely blessed to have the opportunity to serve Christ in this way. If you are or will be in town receiving medical care away from the support of
your home congregation, and you would like them to contact you, please call or
email Tricia at 507-218-1531 or [email protected].
