Building Relationships in Christ
Now and Forever
WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT ?
In July 1984 pop singer Tina Turner released a hit song, "What's Love Got To Do With It?"
It won a Grammy Award in 1985 and became the title of a 1993 movie about the life
of Turner and her escape from an abusive relationship with her husband. The refrain
that probably everyone know is: “Oh what's love got to do, got to do with it / What`s
love but a second hand emotion / What`s love got to do, got to do with it / Who
needs a heart / When a heart can be broken / What`s love got to do, got to do with
it / What`s love but a sweet old fashioned notion”
Many songs about love are really not about love at all, but rather about affection,
longing, goose-bumpy types of emotional thrills at the thought of someone who
means a lot to us. This love runs hot, it runs cold, it runs lukewarm. It brings tears of joy,
tears of depression, screams of excitement and hollers of disappointment.
The love that the Bible speaks of in John 15:23 when it says that “greater love has no
one than this, that he lay his life down for his friends.” How do we know or perceive or
understand love? It is not found in this world, rather revealed to us as Jesus says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in
Him, should not perish, but have eternal life.” This love is found more than 500 times in
the Bible!
Love is an action word; it doesn't describe, it moves, it does something first and it does
something in return. To love is to put yourself last. It's not about you but it's God and
how His love gave us Jesus. We are called to take the love of Christ and apply it to
our lives and relationships.
Sadly, Valentine’s Day is now about flowers, candy, romantic dinners, being nice and
giving gifts. Even “Saint” is dropped from the day. This becomes how we redefine
“love” (like we want to redefine gender, marriage, life and spirituality!)
Still, nothing man or society tries to do to disqualify true love, it still is God’s love to us;
we benefit and thrive in what is ours as God=Love. Because of that, love has every-
thing to do with everything.
It is truly the surprising and amazing love of God that gives us hope, peace, grace
and joy to the Christian, even if life finds us hurt, broken, alone or scared. His unex-
pected and calming promises remain our strength and courage.
There is another Tina I want to talk about! Not like Tina Turner at all, this Tina is my wife!
She amazes me with her love as she reflects the kind of constant and unwavering
love of Christ. She does little things that are great blessings. One example is my “daily
planner.” Sometime and somehow she gets a hold of it and writes little notes on the
months. Sometimes because of a celebration, other times just because she wants to
communicate her love to me. Other times there are ‘stick it’ notes stuck in various
places or a message on the whiteboard on the refrigerator. It is clear that love does
have a lot to do with it, in our relationship in marriage and our walk by faith. When we
are assured of God’s love to us in Christ, then our expression of love to others is possi-
ble. This is our call to faith and our joy in loving.
A Blessed and Love filled February.

This month of February allows us to especially show
our love to those needing immediate help. We will
support and pray for the ministry of the “Rochelle
Rescue Mission” and the service they offer for indi-
viduals and families in need of temporary housing and
a foundation to get on their feet again.
The weekend of February 16 & 17 will be our oppor-
tunity to respond to the needs of others. There will be
baskets provided for our special and generous gifts in
bringing hope and help to those in our community who
need extra support and encouragement.
Please remember this ministry in your prayers as we
also offer our gifts on this weekend of February 16 &
17. Thanks for your contribution to this cause.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE IT? WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?
These questions are getting all the more important
to have answers for in our culture and society to-
day. Despite the “fake” impression that everyone
can believe anything they want, and everyone is
fine with it, we are being shown that the committed
Christian is and will be attacked and not tolerated in
a “tolerant world.”
Having a personal faith is imperative, while it is
also important to have a faith you can have courage
enough to stand up for in the public arena. So, to
help you take a stand and have confidence in what
you say you believe, teach and confess, there is a
class for YOU!
Beginning Tuesday, February 19th at 6 p.m. a
Class taught by Pastor is offered. This class will
take you on a journey into the Bible and the convic-
tions and confession of the Church from the first
centuries, through the Reformation to today.
This is open to everyone, members and friends and
family. Also, for those interested in learning about
the Scriptural and Confessional Lutheran faith, and
for those wishing to become a member of St. Paul
and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
Please call the church office (815.562.2744) to re-
serve your place and study book (which is $15)
If you know someone who might be interested,
please let us know so we can send a letter of invite.
Join in this time of study and fellowship together,
beginning Tuesday, Feb. 19th at 6:00 p.m.
The Lenten Season
On Wednesday, March 6th we enter
into the Lenten season, beginning with
our Ash Wednesday observances. This
time period of 40 days prepares our
hearts and lives for the Passion Week
and the victorious Resurrection Cele-
bration. Plan now on attending the wor-
ship opportunities on every Wednesday, at the
Lenten Chapel service at 8:45 a.m. or the Lenten
Worship at 7:00 p.m. After Ash Wednesday we
will offer a fellowship meal before the evening
worship, served by various congregational boards
and groups. Please plan on dedicating some extra

The Parish Nurse’s Notes: The Health Letter for this issue of the newsletter was

with newborns and their families.
WE NEED ORGAN DONORS You see it on the news and on the medical TV shows but
have you really considered the possibilities? What a life
changing decision you can make when you say “YES” to
becoming an organ/tissue donor.
As of 2017 the number of men,
women, and children waiting for a
transplant is 23,000+. The number
of transplants performed in 2017
were 34,770. You can see the scale
is tipped in the wrong direction to
even try to balance things out. It is
estimated that 30 people die each
day waiting for a transplant. That is equivalent of 22
jumbo jets crashing every year with no survivors. About
4000 people are removed from the waiting list every year
due to being “too sick to transplant”, stated by donor re-
covery and organ donor website.
In the U.S. 95% of adults support donation but only 54%
actually sign up as a donor.
Every 30 minutes another person is added to the waiting
list and only 3 in 1000 people die in a way that allows for
organ donation.
Here are some facts on organ and tissue donations and
what the impact can be:
One organ can save up to 8 lives.
One eye and tissue donor can save or improve the
lives up to 50 people.
Organs include kidney, heart, lungs, liver, small
bowel, and pancreas.
Tissue includes eyes, heart valves, bone, skin, veins
and tendons.
There is no set age limits on becoming an organ do-
nor. At the time of death,
the potential donor’s organs will be evaluated to de-
termine their suitability for donation.
If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital,
the FIRST PRIORITY for the emergency physi-
cians and nurses is to SAVE YOUR LIFE regardless if
you an organ donor or not.
In Illinois, at age 16, you can register at the DMV to
be a donor.
You always have the right to change your mind from
being a donor at any time.
There are no fess or charges to be a donor.
How do you begin…. It is easy. Start by having a family
discussion on your wishes to be a donor. Having the whole
family together and talking allows everyone to understand
your wishes so they can see your wishes are carried out. You
can sign up online in Illinois to be a donor here is the web-
site: https://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/organ-donor.php
In the Christian movie “God’s Compass,” Suzanne Waters’
husband receives a new heart and a few more years with his
family because of another man’s death. As with most organ
donations, the story in “God’s Compass” is simultaneously
hopeful and devastating. It means the end of one man’s life,
yet the continuation of another. In this way, organ donation
is a beautiful demonstration of how God works all things for
the good (Romans 8:28). What a great way to show love for
your neighbor.
Blessings,
Linette Feltes, BSN, RN

Parish Nurse Office Hours are 8:00 - 11:30 am Monday
through Friday unless otherwise noted. There will be no
office hours on Tuesday, February 19th due to a meeting of
the NID Parish Nurse Network in Country Club Hills. You
may also call Marcy at home after hours (815-562-6823). If
she is not home, please leave a message. It will be returned
as soon as possible.
Cards and Coffee will meet in the parish nurse office Feb-
ruary 1 (10-11am). If you can knit, crochet, lace, cut, paste,
count to 12, print labels, or package items you have a needed
skill. The monthly group adds an element of fellowship, but
if you prefer to work at home, we will provide supplies. In
2019 we will provide cards with homebound members, all
residents of local nursing homes and senior living sites and
others in the area--as well as seniors in Bethlehem and Sin-
gapore.
Prayer Shawls (knitted or crocheted) are needed to re-
place those that have been distributed. We will supply the
yarn; you supply the time and talent. Patterns are available
in the parish nurse office.
Parish Nurse Team Meeting will be February 16th at 9:00
a.m.
Single Sunday is Sunday, February 3 at noon at the Sunrise.
This is especially for those who are widowed, divorced,
never married, or just single on Sunday. Call Marcia (815-
562-6823) if you wish to participate so we have sufficient
reservations.
Bethlehem Mission Trip 2019 will have a some-
what different look. It is a year of transitioning into
a new format. Marcy Schnorr will be returning with
a colleague from the NID Parish Nurse Network and
will focus on service. Marcy will be teaching a
Christian Caregiving course to members of the Ajyal
(older adults), arranging for a caring event at St.
Nicolas Home (a facility for seniors--especially with
memory disorders), and possibly other activities.
Marcy's colleague (Pat) is a nurse practitioner and
parish nurse with Chicagoland Lutheran Education
Foundation. Pat will be teaching CPR and First Aid
to the Ajwaz (parents group) and also teaching some
health topics to children in the school. We will also
offer the usual blood pressure checks, heart rate and
rhythm, and blood glucose checks. We also plan a
video conference between the seniors of Bethlehem
and the seniors of St. Paul.
If necessary, Marcy and Pat will travel as a
team...but we welcome others to join us who would
like the experience of visiting and serving in and
around Bethlehem. There are plenty of opportuni-
ties for non-nurses to serve in Bethlehem. Although
primarily a service opportunity, there will be some
opportunities for a pilgrimage visit to some sites in
Jerusalam and Galilee.
We hope to have the team established by March--but
absolutely must have identified team members by
early May. If you are interested, please contact
Marcy in the parish nurse office (815-562-2744) or
at home(815-562-6823) for more information.
Senior Summer Trip will be July 15-18 BUT
registration is needed by
May 15th! We plan a
roundtrip cruise on the Mis-
sissippi River between Le-
Claire, IA and Dubuque with an overnight in Du-
buque. The cruise line requires early reservations--
but there is a refund policy for up to 30 days before
we travel. Information is in the 2019 Senior Minis-
try Program Book or you can visit with Marcy in the
parish nurse office.
OK Club will meet Friday, February 8 at noon at
Aldos. We will continue the short Bible study, One
God/many gods (CPH) which provides a brief over-
view of different world religions and provides tips
for the Christian witness. We will also share
"valentine memories" from childhood. All seniors
are welcome. Please contact Evelyn Hintzsche (815
-562-4668) if you plan to attend.
Senior Fellowship Activity for Febru-
ary will be February 10 at noon. Elda
Mae and her daughter Judy plan to host
chili and a “Judy dessert” at their home
(1241 Tilton Park Dr.) We will sign and
prepare for mailing the valentines to share
with our members in nursing homes or
assisted living sites.
Blood Pressures will be checked in the parish nurse of-
fice on Sunday, February 10th from 8:30-8:45am.
Community Outreach for Seniors continues with a sim-
ple Bible Study, Traveling Light, facilitated by Marcy
Schnorr (CLM-Parish Nurse). Anyone is welcome to
join us at the Hawthorne Inn on February 12 at 2pm or at
Lincoln Manor on February 14 at 5pm. In recognition of
Valentine's Day, there will be a "healthy heart to heart"
activity.
The Board for Health and Human Care will meet
Wednesday, February 13th at 5:30pm in the parish nurse
office.
Senior Supper Club will meet Friday, February 15th at
5:30pm at Salt 251. Any senior is welcome to partici-
pate. A short devotion, some table talk, and a "Valentines
Day quiz" will be the diversion. If you are able to par-
ticipate, please contact Elda Mae Jordal at 815-562-4755.
OK Club will meet Friday, February 22 at noon at the
Butterfly. An activity in memory of George Washington
will be a diversion. If you wish to attend, please contact
Evelyn Hintzsche at 815-562-4668 so we have adequate
reservations.
The Thursday Worship Service will be Thursday, Feb-
ruary 28th at 2pm. This is especially for those whose
health concerns make it difficult to attend the regular
week-end worship. Pastor Hoffmann will lead a short
communion service. A member of the parish nurse team
will be available to check blood pressures for those who
desire the service. A time for fellowship follows. If you
need a ride, please contact Marcy or the church office in
advance. Every effort will be made to provide a ride for
you.
Prayer Chain: Persons
wanting to remain on the
prayer chain or who wish
to become a member of
the prayer chain are asked
to contact Marcy ([email protected]) with
your intent and your current phone number by February
17th. A new updated prayer chain will be developed
soon.

A preacher who

feared death felt
powerless to
comfort others
who were facing
it. Toward the
end of his life, he
moved to an-
other house.
When all the
furniture had
been packed, he
lingered in the home where he’d
raised his children and prepared
many sermons. An assistant inter-
rupted those reflections by say-
ing, “Everything’s gone, sir, but
the new house is better than this
one. Come away.”
The preacher never forgot this
lesson. God has prepared for his
children a home infinitely better
than earth — “an eternal house
in heaven, not built by human
hands” (2 Corinthians 5:1, NIV).
St. Paul Lutheran School “Putting Faith in Education”
Thoughts from the Principal… Thoughts from the Principal 1-18-19
Many of you saw it happen. It was certainly not my
best moment. Because of my mistake as the score-
board operator, our JV boys lost a game. But they
really won.
If it had not been for my mistake of forgetting to start
the clock, time would have run out before the other
team scored the winning basket. But they did score it
and our team lost. But they really won.
You see the next day I made a point to go to each of
the players and apologize for my mistake. I wanted
them to know that it was my fault and that I was sorry.
I don’t know what I expected, but here’s what I got.
Every single one of them said, “That’s ok Mr. Hall”.
Ethan Goodwin said, “You made a mistake. You’re hu-
man.” They all smiled and forgave me. I know kids are
resilient. But they are also kind, loving and forgiving.
Like I said, they really won.
Your kids aren’t good because they are at St. Paul. St.
Paul is good because your kids are here.
I will never forget how embarrassed I was to have
messed up so bad. But I will also never forget those
team members who took that burden from me. Never.
