The Blessing of Small Groups

In the book “Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost, Making Church Matter” by Michael White and Tom Corcoran, they talk about the importance of small groups: “...Small groups are the place where our great big church can get small and personal, where we’re known, loved, and cared for. As such, we like to say that small groups are our primary delivery system for pastoral care. If they’re in a small group, people can get the pastoral care they need, and so much more than our staff could ever give them... In a parish of our size, no matter how much attention the staff lavishes on pastoral care, people will fall through the cracks. This is liable to happen, but with small groups it doesn’t have to happen...Besides, if we’re really go-ing to be the Church that Christ calls us to be, we all need to care for one another. The Bible commands us to do it. Parishioners absolutely can provide pastoral care for one another, and they will if they’re in a small group. Look-ing after members who are sick; checking in on people dealing with family problems; offering the helping hand that’s sometimes needed to get through a difficult week; providing a meal or a ride; watching the kids or walking the dog during a period of loss, these are little things that can be big things of great value in the life of the whole parish community. And when, from time to time, tragedy shows up, you’ve already got a team ready to help.” In my years as Parish Secretary at St. Paul, I have witnessed the blessing of being part of a small group time and time again. It is truly a witness to our Catholic Christian faith to see parishioners rally around someone in need and simply be the support system they so desperately need. What is small group? It’s every single group we have here at St. Paul!

Mass Changes This Fall! Football Season is upon us, and based on the traffic patterns, traffic accidents, and blood-pressure-raising traffic delays experienced by our parishioners and visitors to St. Paul, we have chosen to NOT have a 4:30pm Saturday Mass when there is a home football game scheduled. This change will only affect a few Saturdays:

Please mark your calendars! We’ll have this informa-tion on our website, www.hoosiercatholic.org, and we’ll put periodic reminders in the bulletin, too.

If Saturday Masses are your preferred Mass time, you are always welcome to attend St. Charles’ 4pm Satur-day Mass on Home Football Game days.

March for Life 2018

Washington, DC

man life, especially vulnerable life in a mother’s

womb.” —Pope Francis

The Knights of Columbus are planning our ninth an-nual bus caravan to Washington, DC, for the annual March for Life on the Washington Mall. Any person in the Bloomington area Catholic community is welcome to join us for this rally in support of life. It is an incredi-ble experience to be with hundreds of thousands of people in support of Life.

We will depart Bloomington on Wednesday, January 17, in the evening. We will commute to Indianapolis and then board buses to Washington, DC. We will re-turn on Saturday evening, January 20.

Christmas Sharing

It’s October already, and Christmas is right around the corner.

St. Paul Catholic Center has offered a Christmas Sharing Program since 1986, providing gifts to the poorest of our neighbors—many who cannot qualify for other Christmas Sharing programs because they are homeless or sharing housing with friends or fam-ily and cannot prove residency.

This program depends upon the generosity of the volunteers who help coordinate and deliver Christ-mas cheer, as well as the kindness of our parishion-ers who purchase and wrap the gifts for our neighbors in need.

In order to know how many families we can serve this year, we need to know how many parishion-ers are able to volunteer as Sponsor Families (contacting a few families to confirm the gifts on their wish lists, collecting presents and deliver-ing them before Christmas) and/or serve on the leadership for this ministry.

The Interfaith Winter Shelter de-pends upon volunteers of good will who seek to support com-munity members experiencing homelessness by providing a warm, safe place to stay during the night from November 1 to March 31. If you feel called to help out with this life-saving
