Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Prayer services, reflections and art often focus on the seven last words of Christ. These efforts try to capture the suffering and the agony of body and soul that Jesus experienced. In seven words we hear the intensity and the weight of the battle between evil and good, sin and grace,

death and life. It is a solemn reflection on the difficulty of the spiritual life we lead as followers of Jesus.

If some focus on His seven last words, we might also focus on His seven most difficult words: Take up your cross and follow me. In that short sentence, all the faithful find their mission and purpose in life, given at Baptism and sealed in Confirmation. We follow Jesus. Trusting in His promises, accepting the Holy Spirit, and with a willing mind and heart, we take up our cross. It is the battle of faith, the power of hope and the glory of love. Through struggle, suffering and even death, we choose to follow Christ as our life and our light.

Our final week of preparation for Easter is here and Palm Sunday is the time once again to take up the cross. In our own lives, we will live the Passion of Jesus. We struggle with the meaning of our life, the deci-sions we make, and the sins we commit. Never lose hope! The Lord knows the way. Just pick up your cross and follow Him.

Reflexión

En esta semana, la Semana Santa, que nos conduce a la Pascua, seguiremos este camino de la humillación de Je-sús. Y sólo así será santa también para nosotros. Veremos el desprecio de los jefes del pueblo y sus engaños para acabar con él. Asistiremos a la traición de Judas, uno de los Doce, que lo venderá por treinta monedas. Veremos al Señor apresado y tratado como un malhechor; abandonado por sus discípulos; llevado ante el Sanedrín, condenado a muerte, azotado y ultrajado. Escucharemos cómo Pedro, la roca de los discípulos, lo negará tres veces. Oiremos los gritos de la muchedumbre, soliviantada por los jefes, pidiendo que Barrabás quede libre y que a él lo crucifiquen. Veremos cómo los soldados se burlarán de él, vestido con un manto color púrpura y coronado de es-pinas. Y después, a lo largo de la vía dolorosa y a los pies de la cruz, sentiremos los insultos de la gente y de los je-fes, que se ríen de su condición de Rey e Hijo de Dios. Esta es la vía de Dios, el camino de la humildad. Es el ca-mino de Jesús, no hay otro. Y no hay humildad sin humi-llación. Al recorrer hasta el final este camino, el Hijo de Dios tomó la condición de siervo. En efec-to, humildad quiere decir también servicio, significa dejar espacio a Dios negándose a uno mismo, despojándose, como dice la Escritura. Esta, este vaciarse, es la humilla-ción más grande. Hay otra vía, contraria al camino de Cristo: la mundanidad. La mundanidad nos ofrece el ca-mino de la vanidad, del orgullo, del éxito... Es la otra vía. El maligno se la propuso también a Jesús durante cuarenta días en el desierto. Pero Jesús la rechazó sin dudarlo. Y, con él, sólo con su gracia, con su ayuda, también nosotros podemos vencer esta tentación de la vanidad, de la munda-nidad, no sólo en las grandes ocasiones, sino también en las circunstancias ordinarias de la vida.. Durante esta Semana Santa, pongámonos también noso-tros en este camino de la humildad, con tanto amor a Él, a nuestro Señor y Salvador. El amor nos guiará y nos dará fuerza. Y, donde está él, estaremos también nosotros (cf. Jn 12, 26).

BÀI ĐỌC 1: Is 50,4-7 Đây là bài ca thứ 3 về Người Tôi Tớ của Thiên Chúa. Người Tôi Tớ này không bao giờ cưỡng lại Thiên Chúa. Trái lại luôn lắng nghe lời Ngài và làm theo ý Ngài. - Người Tôi Tớ này cũng không chống lại sự áp bức của người khác. - Người Tôi Tớ đặt trọn niềm trông cậy vào Thiên Chúa. - Mặc dù bản thân đang chịu đau khổ, Người Tôi Tớ lại tìm cách nâng đỡ những người khác đang chịu đau khổ.

BÀI ĐỌC 2: Pl 2,6-11 Đây là một thánh thi diễn tả những bước thăng trầm của Chúa Giêsu: Ngài đã hạ mình xuống đến mức tột cùng, nên Thiên Chúa đã nâng Ngài lên địa vị cao sang nhất.

TUNG HÔ TIN MỪNG: Chúa Kitô vì chúng ta, đã vâng lời cho đến chết, và chết trên thập giá. Vì thế, Thiên Chúa đã tôn vinh Người, và ban cho Người một danh hiệu vượt trên mọi danh hiệu.

BÀI THƯƠNG KHÓ: Lc 22,14—23,56 Mỗi quyển Tin Mừng nhìn ra một nét riêng biệt nơi Chúa Giêsu chịu nạn chịu chết. Raymond E. Brown đã tóm tắt rất súc tích như sau: . Chúa Giêsu chịu nạn trong Tin Mừng Matthêu và Marcô là một Thiên Chúa "gục đầu" vì đau khổ và bị bỏ rơi. . Chúa Giêsu chịu nạn trong Tin Mừng Gioan là một "Vị Vua đang ngự trên ngai". . Chúa Giêsu chịu nạn trong Tin Mừng Luca là một Thiên Chúa nhân từ đang "mở rộng vòng tay" đón tiếp các tội nhân. Như thế, nhân từ là nét nổi bật nhất về Chúa Giêsu trong bài tường thuật của Luca : Ngài đã chữa lành tai người đầy tớ của Vị Thượng Tế, Ngài đưa mắt nhìn Phêrô ngay sau khi ông này chối Ngài nhờ đó làm cho ông sám hối, Ngài dừng lại an ủi những phụ nữ khóc thương Ngài, Ngài hứa ban thiên đàng cho người trộm lành v.v.

Cách chịu đau khổ là thước đo nhân phẩm: Một điều hiển nhiên là cuộc đời ngập tràn đau khổ. Giáo lý đạo Phật dạy "Đời là bể khổ". Nhiều người đã tìm nhiều cách để tránh khổ và diệt khổ. Nhưng có lẽ cái khổ sẽ không bao giờ tránh hết và diệt hết được. Đức Giêsu không tránh khổ, không diệt khổ. Ngài "vác" lấy đau khổ (thập giá), và Ngài dạy môn đệ mình "Ai muốn theo Ta, hãy vác thập giá mình mà theo". Nino Salveneschi có suy nghĩ này : "Thật lạ khi người ta có thể tính toán chính xác về sức nặng có thể chất lên một chiếc xe, một chiếc tàu hay một chiếc máy bay… nhưng không tính nổi sức nặng có thể chất lên vai con người. Xét cho cùng, càng có thể vác nặng bao nhiêu thì càng có giá trị bấy nhiêu" (Savoir souffrir)

Growing up on the edge of poverty, Hector wrestled with homelessness, and was struggling to find food. While playing basketball in a local Church league, he met Fr. Paul O’Brien, who encouraged him to go to college.

Fr. Paul was there for Hector at every step of his journey to college and beyond. With his help and guidance, Hector went on to play basketball for Regis College, graduate, and now works as a school counselor to give back to students the same hope and inspiration he received. Like Fr. Paul, our senior priests in good standing have been helping others for decades.
