MISSION STATEMENT
As a Christ—centered family, rich in tradition and cultures, we are called to live God’s Word by
welcoming, loving and serving all people as we joyfully witness, worship and grow in our Catholic Faith.
Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?”
The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.”

THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION
The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God.

HOW DOES OUR PARISH ATTRACT INQUIRERS WHO CONSIDER
BECOMING CATHOLIC?
The short answer is YOU! Members of a welcoming and evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors. Give thanks to God as He continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do His will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith.

890AM KEEP INFORMED:
As the Church of Monterey continues to grow, our needs for the ministry of service continue to grow by leaps and bounds. The Deacon’s ministry is threefold: to the service of Charity and Justice; service of the Word; and service of the Liturgy. The Deacon is called to be a symbol of that service to which all God’s People are called and indeed is to be an animator of lay ministry. Deacons are serving the poor in many locations, service to the incarcerated, the sick and dying, migrants, those struggling with addictions, victims of violence, etc. They bring those experiences to their ministries of Word (preaching, teaching) and Liturgical service: presiding at Baptisms, Weddings, Funeral Vigils and Committals, and assisting at Sunday Eucharist.
To learn more about the life and ministry of a Deacon in the Church, there will be an information session held at

the horn of my salvation, my strong hold.

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP
God our Father, We open our hearts in trust as we await the selection
of a new bishop for our Monterey Diocese.
May our new bishop be a loving Shepherd, blessed with a compassionate heart.
And may our desire to humbly accompany him bring him courage and peace.
We ask this through the intercession of our Lady of Bethlehem and Saint Junipero Serra.
Amen.

THANK YOU ST. PATRICK’S!
The Seventh Annual Empty Bowls Community Luncheon had
its most successful year raising approximately $45,000. The
proceeds will be used to provide services to our neighbors in
need. The 5Cities Homeless Coalition is recognized as a
leading advocate for the homeless in South County. Last year
we served over 1,000 families. We could not have achieved
our success without the continued support of St. Patrick’s
Church and its parishioners.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk.
