FROM FATHER’S DESK

Beloved faithful in our Lord Jesus Christ,

When I was still a teenager in college in Pittsburgh Iremember when the mayor of Pittsburgh died. He had arare disease where the protein settles in the heart andother organs and hardens them. When the heart calcifiesto such an extent, it ceases to beat. It is no longer a pliablereflexive muscle but has been turned into stone. In theworst cases there is not much that can be done.

A parallel can be drawn to the Christian life. In baptism we were set free from sin andbecame servants of righteousness. But when we turn again to sin, we do harm to ourselves. Sinobscures the inner beauty of God’s image in us. Sin turns our spiritual hearts to stone. Not allat once but gradually. We commit a sin here or there. Maybe we feel remorse, maybe wedon’t. It’s when we don’t feel any sorrow for our sins or are even aware that we are sinningthat we are in real danger. Our hearts are turning to stone. There’s no feeling or movement. No reason is seen to improve or do better. Left unchecked, the end result is spiritual death.“The wages of sin is death.”

Thankfully and happily for us there is something that can be done. It doesn’t place ourlife in danger and it’s not impossible. Others have done it before us. The saints struggled withtheir sins but they did not give up the struggle. What saved the saints was their sincerely askingGod for forgiveness. And then they started living their life in Christ again. As the saints showus, repentance isn’t an once-in-a-lifetime event. It is a journey we make throughout our lives. If we have the desire to shake off our sins then we can be healed through God’s lovingforgiveness.

He showers it on us in abundance when we turn to Him with sorrow for our sins. It’s notthat we become morose about our sins, wallowing in guilt or self-pity. It’s asking God’s graceto recognize our sins. And, examining our conscience against the Ten Commandments andagainst the very example of Jesus we can see what we’ve allowed to harden our hearts. Thenwe can turn to Jesus and beg His forgiveness that our hearts may be healed. Then ourconfession of our own unworthiness will bring forth the abundant blessing of God’s mercy andcompassion.

Let us not harden our hearts but allow His words to soften and open our hearts leading usto blessed repentance by which we may find salvation.

With love in Christ,

Father Matthew
