ST MUNGO’S ACADEMY Session 2013-2014 Newsletter Issue 7 April 2014 Head Teacher’s Message Dear Parent / Carer, There has been a great deal of excitement recently in our school around a number of different ventures: Another group of young people from senior phase graduated from the ‘Marriott Hotel’ experience recently. This involves them working in various departments across the hotel and when they finish are awarded a number of certificates which should help them be more successful in achieving their ambitions. Awards include a Barista certificate, service certificates and health and safety certificates. Thanks to Mrs Nugent in Home Economics for coordinating the programme with Clyde Gateway. Our first group of graduates from the Children’s University took place at the Barony Hall in Strathclyde University on April 24th. Over 40 youngsters from our current first year were part of an Academic Procession and many VIP guests including the Minister for Education were present for this prestigious event. Complete with Caps and Gowns the ceremony was inspirational and a little emotional for all the adults involved – the young people took it in their stride! Thanks to Mrs Carson, Ms Morley and Mr Mann for working with the young people to ensure that it was a huge success. A few of our young people worked very successfully with West of Scotland Housing Association on a domestic violence campaign and were prize winners in developing the promotional material for an awareness raising campaign. Thanks to Mr Sheridan and the Art department for supporting this initiative. Hairspray, our school show this year, is only a month away and we expect a huge turnout. The talent of young people across our school never ceases to amaze and rehearsals demonstrate that this is an event not to be missed. Make sure you book you tickets early! Finally, Commonwealth news! 2 nd April brought together the St Mungo’s Learning Community for an extravaganza showcase event we called our Commonwealth Celebration Event. Singing, dancing, samba, fashion shows and much more culminated in each of our Learning Community schools being awarded a ‘Game On’ award – the first Learning Community in Scotland! Lots of visitors including parents and families were blown away by the community spirit and sheer delight to be part of something that encapsulated the spirit of the Games through laughter and at times tears (of happiness – I hasten to add!). Well done to everyone involved, especially the Commonwealth Committee in our school championed by Miss Sullivan in the PE department. The LC song, which supported the fantastic film made across the Learning Community, called ‘Let the Games Begin’ can be downloaded from I tunes and the film can be watched via the UNICEF website or our school website. It would be fantastic if as many people as possible would support us whilst at the same time donating to UNICEF. Much more feedback and information to follow as East 40, the Learning Community band, take to the road! Thank you for your continued support – please be sure to take advantage of the uniform evenings detailed inside. Yours sincerely Angela Milton Head Teacher

S6 Leavers On Friday the 25th of April our S6 celebrated their last day in St Mungo’s. The group came together for Breakfast, mass and an end of day celebration. Good time was had by all and we wish them every success in their chosen post school destination.

2014 SQA Examinations Our S5 and S6 are now away on study leave. S4 pupils have organised study time. The staff would like to wish them the best of luck in their coming examinations and remind them that they are available at any time to give assistance. Students should ensure that they arrive 15 minutes before the examination start time with all the equipment required.

Anne Frank Ambassadors A huge well done to the group of S1 and S2 pupils who were selected to become Ambassadors for the Anne Frank Trust. This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils as they will go on to educate people further about Anne Frank’s life and the horrors of the Holocaust. Our pupils attended a two day Ambassador Training programme at Strathclyde University and had the opportunity to work with other pupils from across Scotland who had also been chosen to become Anne Frank Ambassadors. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have now been given the task of planning and organising their own Holocaust educational workshop which will be delivered to a number of pupils in our partner primaries. They will also have the opportunity to celebrate Anne Frank Day on 12th June by attending an educational event at the Mitchell Library where they will meet with and hear from Holocaust survivors. I’m sure this will be a very humbling and moving experience that our pupils will learn a great deal from. Miss Morley

Learning Community Commonwealth

Celebration Event St-Mungo's Academy learning community in April ran a very successful Glasgow 2014 commonwealth celebration evening. We gathered as a learning community to celebrate the Commonwealth games arriving in Glasgow and particularly our own school community in Glasgow's East End this summer! All of our St-Mungo's Academy learning community schools have engaged fully in 2014 commonwealth celebrations this school year. This is in an effort to ensure that all our young people can be inspired by the 2014 games through sporting activity, commonwealth culture and educational learning. Perhaps most importantly however we hope that our young people can feel proud of the East End of Glasgow and their home city. The showcase celebration displayed much of the fantastic commonwealth project work which has taken place in our learning community schools. From musical performances, film production to dance and a fabulous fashion show from Cardinal Winning Secondary. Huge congratulations in particular to our dance leadership group, justice and peace group and school Jazz band. Our S1 pupils also worked very hard designing colourful commonwealth batons for the opening ceremony which are pictured! The evening brought together our entire learning community schools of St-Anne’s primary, St-Thomas’s Primary, Sacred Heart primary, St-Denis’s Primary, St. Michael’s and also Cardinal Winning Secondary. We were joined by our commonwealth partner school Newbattle Community High from Midlothian to participate also. Our partner nursery schools Bridgeton Family Centre and Dennistoun Early Years also took part joining in the opening ceremony with Glasgow 2014 mascot Clyde. All schools were rewarded by Education Scotland being issued with a Game On Scotland Plaque. This meant we were one of the first full learning communities in Scotland to receive this award. All acts were fantastic and all invited guests thoroughly enjoyed the evening being very impressed by how much our school community has been inspired by the games! Our next exciting St-Mungo’s learning community event is the Launch of our Learning Community Song called ‘Let The Games Begin! ‘This is now available on iTunes as the UNICEF children’s Commonwealth song. Please support UNICEF and our school learning community by downloading this excellent song featuring some of our own pupils and some famous Scottish artists.

St Mungo’s Academy Learning Community

Commonwealth Welcome Film

One of our most exciting commonwealth projects this year was a short film to highlight Glasgow and St-Mungo's Academy learning community as the friendly welcoming city/ school community it gets its reputation for!! The aim of the film was to welcome athletes, volunteers and visitors from all corners of the commonwealth. Pupils were filmed at various welcome gates, famous buildings entrances, our own learning community schools and sports venue entrances throughout the east end of Glasgow. The pupils were filmed saying welcome in various commonwealth languages and also holding up colourful banners and commonwealth flags. Pupils from all our learning community schools were invited to take part in the filming of this project. All schools came up with their own unique idea of how to welcome the commonwealth. We even had pupils welcoming the commonwealth in their own first language. The final film was shown for the first time at our celebration evening. It will also be shown to all secondary and learning community primary pupils at assemblies. The final film also includes our St-Mungo’s learning Community Commonwealth song- Let the Games Begin. This song is now the UNICEF children’s commonwealth song.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR FILM PRODUCTION TEAM- MEGAN McGINLAY EWAN EVANS STEPHEN BEAVIS WILLIAM GARDNER

This ranged from the Leisure Suite/Banqueting & Conferencing/Restaurant to name but a few. The pupils benefited from Barista Training and training in the Safe Sale and Service of Alcohol. They had the opportunity to complete ‘The Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate’ if they hadn’t already done so. They also had training in the intensive cleaning of their specific departments. The completed posters displayed their vision for the future and what they think is valuable in life and to think about the values and qualities needed to make a success of their own life The standard of the completed posters was excellent and it made it very difficult to choose the top five to go forward to the finals. The five finalists are: Name Inspirational Figure Inspirational Quote Chloe Brady Martin Luther King Jr. “You can never cross the

School Uniform

This year has seen a significant rise in the number of young people wearng their school Blazer. The introduction of the Gold ‘braiding’ for S6 pupils has proved to be very successful, as well as looking fantastic, they wear it with pride in school and out in the community as fantastic ambassadors representing St Mungos Academy.

Once again this year the Student Council have met with the Chief Executive of Academy Uniforms to discuss and plan the fitting/purchasing of blazers for next session. Current S5 pupils due to move into S6 will have an opportunity to have their current blazer BRAIDED if they do not need to purchase a new one. These should be handed into the school no later than Thursday 22nd May. Please ensure the blazers are clean with their name and class clearly labelled. Academy Uniforms will be in St Mungo’s will on

Monday 19th May from 4.30-6.30 (S2 parents Evening) Please come along between these times with your son/daughter for a fitting.

GTC Commonwealth Update St-Mungo's Academy Learning Community is situated in the heart of Glasgow's East End, a deprived area of the city which is being regenerated helped by the arrival of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The school community consists of 9 schools - St-Mungo's Academy, Cardinal Winning Secondary, Sacred Heart Primary, St-Anne's Primary, St-Denis's Primary, St-Michael's Primary, St-Thomas's Primary and our two nursery establishments Bridgeton Family Centre and Dennistoun Early Years. All of our schools are situated in the heart of the main Commonwealth Games sporting venues such as the opening ceremony stadium Celtic Park, the Emirates Arena / Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, The National Hockey Centre and Athlete's Village. As a Learning Community we therefore believed we could not let the biggest sporting and cultural event Scotland has ever hosted just pass our pupils by! We decided to work hard to inspire our pupils to be proud of their city and St-Mungo's Learning Community. Our young people have been given some hugely exciting opportunities this year to encourage them to get active, learn about the Commonwealth as well as their local area and have great fun celebrating the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Sport and Activity: In relation to sport and getting active all primary pupils have engaged in a full Learning Community Sporting Challenge which involved 21 sporting activities and took over the entire Emirates arena. A huge opportunity for young pupils to participate at a Commonwealth Sporting Venue and try new sports. This was organised through active schools co-ordinator Leanne Hillan with funding assistance from The Big Lottery's Celebrate Fun and Clyde Gateway. Hopefully this event encourages all of St-Mungo's Learning Community youngsters to participate in sport at every opportunity in the long term. The event was also assisted by City of Glasgow College who sent along second year students to coach each sports activity. These students were incredibly hard working and enthusiastic on the day, excellent role models for all our youngsters. This will have been one of the coaches first experiences of running a multi-sports event so hopefully has also given them valuable experience to continue some outstanding coaching work within Glasgow ! In St-Mungo's Academy our sports leadership group have been involved in Lead 2014 the hugely successful Legacy 2014/Youth Sports Trust programme which involves University students mentoring young leaders within Secondary Schools at a Strathclyde University conference day. Leaders then have the skills to go back to school and lead their own commonwealth festival for younger pupils. Our leaders were also involved in the GHA/Cube Housing/Legacy 2014 Gold Medal Award Programme which donated funding for a Leadership legacy through coaching certificates and equipment enabling our leaders to run commonwealth events in St-Mungo's Academy and coach within our learning community primaries. This is a programme that St-Mungo's Academy wishes to build on following the inspiring Glasgow 2014 games allowing our senior pupils to gain leadership skills and provide fantastic sports events for younger pupils to get active and enjoy sport! The Gold Medal Award programme has also allowed some of our young people to try out track cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, another hugely inspiring opportunity that our young people loved! This is the first school cycling programme of this magnitude in the UK again organised by Active Schools in Glasgow.
