The first time I went to Adoration,

near as I can remember, was a couple of years before I entered the seminary. I’m not sure if I even knew what “Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament” meant, though I had heard the term, mostly through others’ conversations or through bulletin ads, as we do here. The parish was hosting a 24 Hour period of Adoration and I was asked to cover one of the hours. My immediate response was: “I don’t know what to do. I’ve never been to that before and never really learned about what it is. Isn’t that for people who like to pray a lot?” The priest said that wasn’t necessarily the case, but since we all know how to pray at least a little, that’s a good place to start. They needed somebody to fill a late slot, and since I was planning to apply to the seminary, he thought this would be a good introduction. As you know, on Sunday mornings when we’d normally be celebrating Mass, we have been exposing the Blessed Sacrament on the altar at both parishes. I mentioned in a recent homily that our number of attendees during this time period has never been high enough to go against any edicts regarding social gathering or distancing, which is sad when you think about it. However, many of us may be asking the same questions I was asking 25 years ago: “What is it? What am I supposed to do?” The better question to ask, which you will agree once reading it, is : “WHO is it?” Of course, in the Blessed Sacrament we find Our Lord. We see Jesus. In the Eucharist, He gives to us His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. As Pope St. John Paul II expressed, Adoration is in a sense an extension of Communion. We all know what it is to receive Communion and pray to God in the pew afterward. Adoration is the same thing, though I think it adds a difference if we’ve never really thought about it. I like the idea that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is an extension of the Consecration, when the priest holds up the host to show the congregation. We know at that moment something has

changed. Our Lord has come before us in a real way that did not exist a minute before. It’s during the Consecration that many people utter the words of St. Thomas: “My Lord and my God!” If Jesus stood before you as He was in your favorite Gospel passage; if you were there in the upper room when He walked through the door and greeted the Apostles with, “Peace be with you;” if He came to you in a vision...What would you say to him? When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and you see the host in the monstrance, it’s that Jesus standing before you. Say whatever you want. Ask whatever you want. Bring to him whatever concern you have. Say nothing and just be in his Presence. It’s all good. We may be denied public Mass and Communion at this time, but we cannot be denied Our Lord. He promised to be with us for all time and in the most difficult of times; and in this time his closeness to us is guaranteed every time we come before him in Adoration. And He utters the same words to us as in the upper room: “Be not afraid.”

be a minimum of 500 words, #12 Font, 1” margins and must include an introduction, 3 paragraphs and a closing.
