Dear Friends in Christ:
In one of the Bibles that I have, today’s gospel has the heading, “The Corrupt Judge.” It, of course, refers to the judge in the parable although Jesus simply says that he “feared neither God nor respected any human being.” But because of the fact that, under Jewish law, three judges were needed to arbitrate a matter, this one was likely a secular judge appointed by either Herod or the Romans. These kinds of judges earned a very poor reputation because those petitioning the court would not likely receive justice unless they had influence or they could buy it. These types of judges were believed to pervert justice for a good meal. They truly deserved the title “corrupt” or “robber” judges as they are sometimes called. The second party to this parable was the widow. She represents the poor and those with no influence to barter with in exchange for a just verdict. The average person in her situation had little chance for a favorable judgment. The ace that she held in her hand was that of persistence. She refused to give up. Like Moses in the battle against Amalek, she kept her hands raised and made the corrupt judge fearful of even a physical attack. He relented, not because he wanted to impart a just decision; rather, to avoid the consequence if he did not settle the matter in the persistent woman’s favor. Finally, Jesus contrasts our Father in heaven with the judge who gives in only under duress. As God is a loving Father, He hears our prayers and our cries. How often do we give up too soon instead of persevering in prayer? Jesus wants us to trust that, unlike the corrupt judge, God has our best interests front and center. Therefore, sometimes we don’t receive what we ask for because it would hurt or destroy us. Looking back on our lives, sometimes we can be extremely thankful for the times God said no! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Gregg

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has asked that all the faithful pray a daily Rosary and the Prayer of

Prayer to St. Michael
the Archangel St. Michael the
Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we hum-

Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all
the evil spirits who prowl through the
world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
