Fr Peter writes :

O perfect Love, all human thought transcending,

lowly we kneel in prayer before thy throne,

that theirs may be the love which knows no ending,

whom thou forevermore dost join in one.

O perfect Life, be thou their full assurance,

of tender charity and steadfast faith,

of patient hope and quiet, brave endurance,

with childlike trust that fears nor pain nor death.

Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow;

grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife,

and to life's day the glorious unknown morrow

that dawns upon eternal love and life.

The Wedding hymn 'O Perfect Love' was born in 1883. In a sleepy Westmorland town, a group of youngsters were singing John Ellerton's hymn 'O Strength and Stay'. And one of them was given a challenge to fit wedding words to suit the music. Within 15 minutes, one of them came up with the now familiar words: A few years after writing 'O Perfect Love', it was published in 'Hymns, Ancient and Modern' and soon became so popular, that it was chosen for a royal wedding. On 27th July 1889, Princess Louise of Wales, the sister of King George V, married Alexander William George Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, at the Chapel Royal, Buckingham Palace. A granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Louise Victoria Alexandra Dagmar was one of three daughters of King Edward VII and was brought up in one of the Royal palaces, Sandringham House, Norfolk. The words of the hymn remained the same but a new tune was written for the royal wedding, and the challenge of writing this was given to Joseph Barnaby. He named this new tune 'Sandringham'. Joseph Barnaby was born on 12th August 1838, in Yorkshire to organist, composer and conductor Thomas Barnby. When he was seven, Joseph joined the choir at York Minster and became organist and choirmaster at the age of twelve! At 16, he entered the Royal Academy of Music, London. He held several important organist roles1, orchestrated daily concerts in the Albert Hall, and conducted the St. Matthew Passion in Westminster Abbey. Despite the recent record rainfalls the skies cleared for special wedding at St Matthews being the wedding of Nell Parkes and Tanu Nu’u (from Samoa) Nell is the daughter of Bishop John and Margaret Parkes and all the stops were pulled out for a very happy day. Our Bishop gave his daughter away after walking her down the aisle without his usual Cope and Mitre and Mrs Margaret Parkes wore an ensemble of black and hot pink with spectacular matching shoes that were greatly admired The Bride wore a traditional full ivory gown overlaid by beaded organza with a train and veil and pearls The groomsmen wore black Lava with Tapa cloth and a garland of red coral, traditional Samoan male wedding attire. The altar cloth was a huge piece of Tapa that reached to the ground. The spectacular music included a special arrangement of the Schubert mass in G and the St Matthews Choir was joined by the cathedral, Wangaratta Choristers and a Samoan Choir. Adrian Wintle played the happy couple down the aisle with a stirring rendition of the Widor Toccata on the St Matthews famous Letourneau pipe organ. Fr Graeme Garrett from Canberra, an old Parkes family friend and Fr Peter conducted the service which was followed by canapés and champagne in the St Matthews Forecourt and Garden before the reception at the Albury club where Bishop John is a member. St Matthews garden Caroline Holmes, BBC Celebrity Gardener spoke with great enthusiasm on the design of the St Matthews garden drawing on her experience of gardens in different settings across the world .The St Matthews Garden is waking up with snowdrops, white hellebores and daphne in flower, spring bulbs are pushing their way through, the leaves of the liquidambar trees are

nearly all down (and have been quite a challenge for Coralie). If anyone has access to Cream Clivias (not the orange please!)! they would make a special addition to the area around the Diamond jubilee pavilion and memorial garden. The historic decorated iron fence continues to be restored and the gates have returned positively gleaming and there is no doubt that the total restoration will make St Matthews the finest frontage in Albury. Sudden Swan song for Choir director “Dramatic Changing of the Guard” for St Matthews Music. St Matthews Albury has experienced a year of great change with the red carpet being rolled almost weekly to welcome significant national and international figures to the region and the year is far from over. From Vice-regal visits to the nation’s leading academic figures and leaders in the Arts and human rights St Matthews has stunned audiences and congregations with the quality of is music, most recently with a Diamond Jubilee Evensong with 7 trumpets and full choir singing the same music as that heard at St Pauls Cathedral London. So it was that the sudden stepping down of both music director and organist over one weekend came as a bit of a shock. Music director John Ross, former director of the Albury Conservatorium has been designated “St Matthews composer in residence” and will continue to compose church music, much to the delight of our choir. Long time organist John Scott has become “organist emeritus” and will continue to play as the need arises and as his commitments allow. Upon the advice of our music committee It was announced that Adrian Wintle from Wagga, a celebrated organist with international experience has been appointed the St Matthews Organist on the famous Letourneau Organ .Mike Halsey a distinguished bass baritone will specialised knowledge of choral repertoire has already taken over the direction of the St Matthews choir for the time being until a full time director can be found and the first morning service after the choir returned from holidays showed the new combination to great advantage and we look forward to some new ideas and new interpretations while building on the great work of our dedicated musicians and all are very welcome to attend. AAY (Albury Anglican Youth) “We are all in the same boat.” The Anglican Youth of Albury recently had a meeting, focused on issues of Social Justice. The news has been filled with issues facing refugees and policies that might be implemented to limit their arrival. We the Albury Anglican Youth (AAY) are interested to see what young people really felt about current issues as we are part of a Christian community that seeks to live out the gospel of Jesus Christ We canvassed a wide range of people including the 20 youth of the AAY present on youth issues. Those who felt that it was” none of their business” were in the minority most felt that “How we treat vulnerable people is everyone’s business we are all in the same boat.” Sunday 29th of July Bishop John Parkes, Anglican Bishop of Wangaratta will come to Albury to launch a youth initiative to explore attitudes to refugees and Asylum among young people in regional Australia ,with prize money of a few thousand dollars donated by concerned Anglicans. The 2012 Bishop of Wangaratta’s Social Justice Essay and Multimedia competition is based on the words of the Australian national anthem.

“For those who’ve come across the seas we’ve boundless plains to share’ and is open to primary, secondary and tertiary students.

The competition is the initiative of AAY the Albury Anglican Youth under the leadership of 19 year old university student Clinton Monteiro and local teachers, and reflects the concern of young people for humanitarian concerns over the treatment of vulnerable people in the light of the current “tough love” approach Australian politics. The Bishop will be at the service at 9am at St Matthews and a concert in aid of refugees “We’re all in the same Boat” at 1pm featuring musicians from Albury High and other local musical talent.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

National Trust to be asked for grant for the painting & restoration of the front fence. Landscaping The power has been put on to the pavilion & notice board. Water has

been connected to the water feature. More plants are to be put in.. The Outreach & Pastoral Care committee have designed a brochure to be given to

new comers. Members of this committee would like to assist the clergy with pastoral care visiting. Deacon Heather Matthews is interested in doing bereavement counselling.

Anglican Food Room gave out 12 hampers in June as well as 20 kg mince. The

mince is being donated by Northside Hotel. All the faculties have been approved. i.e. Moving the font to the Lady Chapel, the

Madonna above the pulpit, the cross above the votive candle stand & the memorial garden.

Archiving. The files that are stored at the Retirement Village have to be moved by

December as redevelopment work is to commence then. Finance We need to increase our income. The finance committee is planning to

have a meeting with someone who can advise on planned giving. Bank Balances At the 30

th June, the closing balance in the No 1 account was

$5289.34 less cheques to be paid $4148.57. In the No 2a/c the balance was $36370.12 less cheques to be paid $672.40.

Choir Report. Some choir members have left for various reasons. Michael Halsey

to be music director until September with Adrian Wintle as principal organist. Looking at putting something on the stairs to the gallery & the steps in the

gallery to prevent people from slipping . Confirmation on the 7th December. If you are interested in being confirmed or

know someone who might be, please contact the office Monday to Friday between 8.30 am & 12.30 pm to register.

The choir from St Peter’s Eastern Hill would like to take part in a service at St

Matthew’s. Fr Peter is hoping to be able to organise this with St Matthew’s

Music Department.

Relay for Life St Matthew’s is putting a team in this relay. I have registered our team as St Matthew’s I hope you will consider taking part It can be a lot of fun. You do not have to stay for the duration. You can come & go as you please. This year Relay for life will commence at 9.30am on Saturday 27th October at Wodonga Raiders Football/Sports Ground. Birralee Park, finishing on Sunday morning. Survivors morning tea at 10 am, Candlelight ceremony of hope at dusk . If you would like to be part of St Matthew’s team, you may join on line ’Relay for Life Border 2012 ’ find St Matthew’s team & join, or contact me. Cost to join before 28th September is $15 after that it will cost $20. Remember the registration fee entitles you to a free T-Shirt & covers your insurance while at the event. It is not part of the team’s fundraising. If you join it is the usual practice that you ask family friends,& work colleagues to sponsor you. Children’ s Church IN JULY 2012

The theme for this Sunday was BAPTISM, and Fr. cele-brated a baptism during the service, and the children were invited to be part of the service. Fr. Peter told the children that Baptism made us a member of “Jesus’ team” and showed children a footy top and footie to emphasise this point. T he children enjoyed singing “I’m in the Lord’s army’ with actions, as well as ’My God is so big’, and a couple of other rousing songs. Cathy Carden provided the music for the service. Little 10 month old baby Ella, was the perfectly behaved baby during her bap-tism, and her parents and godparents were keen to take part in the ser-vice. The 20 children were encouraged to take part in the Communion service which followed the baptism. During the service, the children’s area was well used. As it was a cold and damp day, drinks and sausages in bread and other yummy things were consumed at the back of the church, provided by a willing team of ladies, who faithfully support Chil-dren’s Church. N.B AUGUST celebrates Children’s Church’s 12th birthday, come and share the service and a piece of birthday cake! Julie Scott, Children’s Church spokesperson for Albury Mother’s Union.

OUR GARDEN BIRDS @ ST. MATTHEWS !

Now that we have a beautiful garden, birds are encouraged to visit it on a regular basis! (please let us know if you see any birds not mentioned!) Australian Magpies were some of the first visitors. Ones here are all black backed. If you go to Cooma they are all white backed– a solitary white-backed one can be seen here from time to time. One domestic pigeon thinks it is a chicken and has taken up residence with the Silkies (who really don't like it!). A spotted turtle dove comes to enjoy the free grain put out for the chickens! A pair of Rosellas, one yellow and one crimson (Mountain Lowry) have been seen together. These two species do hybridise on occasions. Except for their colour, their behaviour is similar. Yellow Rosellas are only found near river red gums, and the Murray Darling area. Crimson Rosellas are common throughout Eastern Australia. There is a pair of magpie larks (peewees) . Have you noticed the sexes are different? The male has a white eyebrow. The ‘crows’ here are really Australian Ravens. They are easy to recognize from their call, which always ends in a ‘terminal gargle’. Little Ravens, also widespread, do not have the terminal Gargle but are very similar. The former are more usually seen here. House Sparrows are so common one scarcely notices them. However there is another related family, Field Sparrows, which look almost the same and an be seen in this area (but not in our garden). Male and female House Sparrows are different. The female has a white eyebrow. Both were introduced by the early settlers. There are Pied Currawongs about. They are omnivorous and have a bad reputation for being partial to eggs and young chicks. There are only a few Sulphur Crested Cockatoos here. Flocks are much disliked by

farmers as they cause destruction in grain crops. Angela Braybrooks. And with many thanks to Coralie who spends far longer in the garden and sees all the birds.

Parishioner Profiles and Friends of St Matthews PARISHIONER PROFILE – Cate Austin St Matthew’s Church has played a pivotal role in my life for the past 25 years. Peter & I were married at Munderoo, near Tumbarumba in 1976 and lived west of Gee-long until 1987, when we moved to Albury, primarily for Peter’s work and to educate our four children. Our two elder girls, Penny & Belinda were members of the St Matthew’s choir, our youngest Sal was baptised and they & our son Stuart were confirmed at St Matthew’s. Throughout the 25 years St Matthew’s has provided a place of beauty, solace and great communion for our family. My life’s career has been nursing, as a general nurse and midwife. While our children were living at home, I worked in Albury. Once they had all moved away for tertiary edu-cation and their own careers, I made the decision to take up the challenge of working in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. For me it has been an enormous anthropological and geographical learning curve and I have been blessed to be able to work with these amazing people. After three years I remain passionate & committed to this work. My work is absolutely apolitical and any comments I make should be taken as such. My work has taken me from the desert communities in the centre to coastal communities in Arnhem Land, Croker Island in the north and Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Each community is different and interesting with their own traditions & ‘dreamings.’ These communities in the Top End are very isolated and are only accessible by air, so for us as nurses and midwives you live and breathe the community for the period we are here. It is quite difficult to understand that the communities consist of houses randomly placed, a health centre, a community store, a school, a town council, a church and that is your life. We are not able to leave the community, so you get to be rather discerning about what you pack in your 13kgs of luggage (small plane allowance). Our accommoda-tion is a basic 1-2 bedroom unit or house, comfortable enough. We buy our own food at the store, very expensive because of freight costs. All the coastal Top End communities get there supplies by barge from Darwin once a week, weather permitting. In the desert it is by truck, again weather permitting. The health centres are staffed by anything from 2 to 8 nurses & 1 to 4 aboriginal health workers depending on the community, with about 50% of communities having a medical practitioner for part or all of the week. The health centres operate as a combination of general practitioners rooms and a hospital emergency department. They are equipped with the basic necessities, we are open for business during office hours and then two nurses share on-call during the night and weekends. For life threatening emergencies and serious illness, there is a system in place for us to phone a duty medical officer in Darwin and they organise a medical evacuation plane to come to the community and transport the patient to either Darwin or Gove. The time this takes can vary enormously depending on the weather and how busy they are, much the same as urban ambulance service, except we have no choice but to care for the patient and most often the family until the plane arrives, very rarely under 6 hours. There is no denying the work can be very stressful, particularly when you have a very sick baby, with an anxious family never far away. So, when you see on television stories of the chronic disease, childhood ill-nesses that are so much more complex out here, mortality in indigenous communities, the self harm and suicides, the clan fighting & abuse, there are people like me in every community doing our best to do our little bit to improve the health of these people. We are the health service, but also so much more, because we live in the community, every-

FRIENDS OF ST MATTHEWS—Rachell Mattys My name is Rachelle Matthys and I come from Buffalo, NY. I have come to Albury for 5 months to play basketball for the Border Lady Bandits. During my stay here I have tried to do volunteer work. I approached Fr Peter about doing voluntary work for the church. I have been fortunate to meet the kind and helpful staff at St Matthew’s and they have allowed me to do volunteer work over my short stay here in Albury. The church is beautiful and well kept. Everybody here is very proud of the history of St Matthew’s as they should be. I belong to Chapel at Crosspoint in Getzville, NY with Pastor Jerry Gillis. When I return to the US I will be looking to pursue a Master’s in Education. Thank you for the time here. Rachelle

one wants to know who you are, as you walk along the road to & from work people say hello, and then “what your name”. In the centre Europeans are “Kardia”, in the Top End “Balanda” and nurse/teacher is “Yuppa”. At the same time, there is no escape or time out, except to lock the door to your accommodation. The children love having new nurses especially if you make friends with them, they love having the attention. If you imagine living in a three bedroom house with 10 to 15 other family members, for a child, having someone taking the time to talk to you, it is very im-portant. It is vital to get to know the aboriginal health workers and local staff, they can be an invaluable resource to learn the family units and in difficult situations. Not the least with language, English is their second language to varying degrees depending on the level of schooling. Some speak very little English so we have to rely on someone who does & they never speak English between themselves in front of us. Perhaps sometimes it would be better not to know what they are saying! “Silly old bat” or something! In every community I have worked, there has been a period of mission life and thus a church which remains functional today, either Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran. They have their own trained clergy and use a variety of morning services as a basis. A lot of Euro-pean hymns have been translated into their language so it is easy to follow the singing. One interesting tradition I have found in all communities is that women sit on one side of the aisle and men the other, never the twain shall meet! I always wait to be invited before I go to their church, but enjoy the service when I do attend. This really is just scraping the surface of what nursing in remote indigenous com-munities is all about. An anthropologist proposed a game to children in an African tribe. He

put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got

there first won the sweet fruits.

When he told them to run they all took each other’s hands and ran together, then sat to-

gether enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could

have had all the fruits for himself, they said: “UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if

all the other ones are sad”?

UBUNTU in the Xhosa culture means: “I am

because we are”.
