Dear Student-Athletes,
Thank you for being committed to the SMR Knights Athletic program. Participating in Inter-
scholastic athletics is a program that students must earn through work in the classroom, on the
field and in the community. Participation is not required for graduation, nor must the student
have athletic credits for college entrance. Those who participate know that they will give extra
effort and extra time, while playing in a highly competitive conference.
We, as a school, applaud your efforts in being a member of a Knight team. Through your long
days of practice, travel time to games, completing homework and studying for tests, you are
preparing yourself to be a successful leader in college and your future community. The life
skills of self-motivation, time-management, self-discipline and working with others towards a
common goal are all hallmarks of a positive leader.
Please don’t forget to thank your parents, your biggest fan since childhood, for their unending
support in your athletic pursuits this season.
May God bless you, on and off the field!
Sincerely,
Rick Wood, Principal

A Note from Coach Tallman, Director of Athletics
Dear Student-Athletes,
The majority of our student-athletes have aspirations of continuing their playing careers at a
NCAA member school. I am often asked, “What do I need to do to get to the next level?” Here
are some simple guidelines to get you started. It begins with proper preparation.
Prepare Athletically
Prepare physically, be committed, outwork others, improve your talents, have a great attitude,
study the game, and listen to your coaches.
Prepare Academically
Core Courses: The NCAA Division I requires 16 core courses. Division II requires 14
(However, beginning 2013, 16 core courses will also be required).
Division I has a sliding scale for qualification based on test score and GPA.
Division II has a minimum SAT score requirement of 820 (Critical Reading and Math com-
bined) or ACT score of 68 (English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science combined) with a core
GPA of at least 2.0
Only core courses are used in the calculation of the GPA.
Students enrolling at an NCAA Division I or II institution for the first time need to also com-
plete the amateurism questionnaire through the Eligibility Center Web site at
www.ncaaclearinghouse.net .
Finally, I leave you with a quote from Coach John Wooden… “If you don’t have time to do it
right, when will you have time to do it over?”
Let’s Go Knights!
