Do Not Conform Yourself to this Age

St. Paul tells us, “Do not conform yourself to this age but...discern...what is good and pleasing…” Since Roe V. Wade, around 60 million innocent children have lost their God-given right to live. An entire class of persons, children in the womb, have been relegated to the status of “chattel”, personal property, who can be disposed of by those more powerful than they. They have no power to resist. They are subject to abuse and destruction by those with more power, namely the power of the State. They have no voice that can be heard ex-cept our own. Without doubt, the killing of innocent children in the womb is the pre-eminent moral evil of our age. It is for this reason that we must “not conform” to this grave injustice. As St. Paul tells us, we must instead stand on the side of truth and justice and “what is good and pleasing to God”. We must recognize what both medical science and nat-ural justice tell us: children in the womb are human persons with an inalienable right to life. Undoubtedly, the most important human rights issue of our age is to protect our “first neighbors”- - -children in the womb. The womb is the “first home” of the whole human race and standing up for them is a matter of solidarity with our neighbor and love for the poor. We should not stand by while thousands of children every day are evicted and killed! Our call (as St. Paul reminds us) is to replace the cur-rent culture of death with a new culture of life and a civiliza-tion of love.

Theology of the Body Workshop event to be held at

Dear St. Mary’s Parishioners:

This weekend, I share with you an excellent reflection

on “Silence in the Liturgy” written by James Cavanagh, Direc-

tor of Worship of the Diocese of Sacramento.

“Sacred silence also, as part of the celebration, is to be

observed at the designated times.” (GIRM 45) “For everything

there is a season and time for every matter under heaven …….

A time to keep silence and a time to speak …” - Ecclesiastes

3:1, 7

Silence is an essential part of worship. It’s not just the

absence of sound, an acoustical void, a momentary interlude

between words, or a pause in the action. Silence is a positive

thing, a resonate tremor reverberating deep in the soul. In litur-

gy, as in life, we need silence. Silence allows us to hear the

‘still, small voice’ of God whispering in our hearts. Because the

modern world is filled with so much noise we need silence

more than ever. As Pope emeritus Benedict XVI said,

“Ours is not an age which fosters recollection. At times

one has the impression that people are afraid of detaching

themselves, even for a moment, from the mass media. For

this reason, it is necessary nowadays that the people of

God be educated in the value of silence. Rediscovering the

centrality of God’s word in the life of the Church also

means rediscovering a sense of recollection and inner re-

pose. The great patristic tradition teaches us that the mys-

teries of Christ all involve silence. Only in silence can the

Word of God find a home in us, as it did in Mary, woman

of the word and, inseparably, woman of silence. Our litur-

gies must facilitate this attitude of authentic listen-

ing.” [The Word of the Lord, Verbum Domini, 66]

Silence is a kind sonic veil that amplifies God’s pres-

ence, not unlike the way a bride’s veil and gown accentuates

her beauty, or the way priestly vestments make visible the

priest’s sacred vocation and identity. We can see his priest-

hood, but only as it is mediated via sacred vestments. We can’t

see the thing itself. Some things are rendered more beautiful

and more intriguing not because we can see them (or hear

them), but because we can’t, because they are hidden. Silence

does that. Silence helps us feel God's presence.

Silence before Mass helps us cultivate a receptive dis-

position. The silences after each prayer and following the read-

ings allow the words to penetrate more deeply. Why do we au-

tomatically close our eyes when the celebrant says, “let us

pray”? It is because closing our eyes opens the soul. Same

thing with silence. Silence opens the soul to the hidden God,

who speaks through his word. By pondering that word in si-

lence, we are led to the invisible God who is shrouded in si-

lence. Silence enables us ponder the ineffable.

It's not just that the Mass should be periodically punc-

tuated by moments of silence. The whole Mass should be in-

spired by silence. Silence is not an interruption between words

and songs; words and songs arise from the silence. It's not that

Mass should be silent, but rather that it should reflect the char-

acter of God who is the protagonist of the liturgy. Since it is

Christ who accomplishes the work of our salvation in the litur-

gy, the liturgy should reflect the humble quiet, servant savior

who does not "cry or lift up his voice or make it heard in the

street." (Mt. 12:19; Is. 42:2).

I am grateful to James Cavanagh for this reflection that

hit home with me. God willing, we can be more intentional

about fostering a spirit of silence in our liturgies and in our

church. I, for one, know that I can be better about maintaining

some moments of silence during the celebration of Mass. And, I

know I can be better about visiting with folks outside of the

main body of the church, so that those praying before and after

Mass can have some quiet to gather their thoughts. We do pret-

ty well in this regard, but there is always room for improve-

ment! St. Mary’s is blessed with a large vestibule and outside

shaded areas. These are the best locations for visiting before

and after Mass.

Estimados Feligreses de Santa María:

Este fin de semana, comparto con ustedes una excelente refle-

xión sobre "Silencio en la Liturgia", escrito por James Cavanagh, Direc-

tor de Culto de la Diócesis de Sacramento.

"También el Silencio sagrado, como parte de la celebración, se

debe de observar durante el tiempo designado." (IGMR 45) "Todo tiene

su tiempo, y todo lo que se quiere debajo del cielo tiene su ho-

ra......... tiempo de callar, y tiempo de hablar... "- Eclesiastés 3: 1, 7

El silencio es una parte esencial del culto. No es sólo la ausen-

cia del ruido, un vacío acústico, un interludio momentáneo entre pala-

bras, o una pausa en la acción. El silencio es algo positivo, un temblor

de sonido reverberante profundamente en el alma. En la liturgia, al igual

que en la vida, necesitamos silencio. El silencio nos permite escuchar la

'pequeña voz' de Dios susurrando en nuestros corazones. Ya que el mun-

do moderno está lleno de tanto ruido y distracciones necesitamos más

que nunca el silencio. Como el Papa Benedicto Emérito XVI, dijo,

"Nuestro tiempo no favorece el recogimiento, y se tiene a veces la

impresión de que hay casi temor de alejarse de los instrumentos de

comunicación de masa, aunque solo sea por un momento. Por eso

se ha de educar al Pueblo de Dios en el valor del silencio. Redes-

cubrir el puesto central de la Palabra de Dios en la vida de la Igle-

sia quiere decir también redescubrir el sentido del recogimiento y

del sosiego interior. La gran tradición patrística nos enseña que los

misterios de Cristo están unidos al silencio, y sólo en él la Palabra

puede encontrar morada en nosotros, como ocurrió en María, mu-

jer de la Palabra y del silencio inseparablemente. Nuestras liturgias

han de facilitar esta escucha auténtica.” [Palabra del Señor, Ver-

bum Domini, 66]

El silencio es un velo sónico que amplifica la presencia de

Dios, no muy diferente a la forma que el velo y el vestido de una novia

acentúan su belleza, o la forma sacerdotal que las vestimentas hacen

visible la vocación y la identidad sagrada del cura. Podemos ver su sa-

cerdocio, pero sólo a través de vestimentas sagradas. No podemos ver la

cosa misma. Algunas cosas se hacen más bellas e intrigantes, no porque

podemos verlas (o escucharlas), si no, porque no podemos, porque están

ocultas. El silencio hace eso. El silencio nos ayuda a sentir la presencia

de Dios.

El silencio antes de Misa nos ayuda a cultivar una disposi-

ción receptiva. El silencio después de cada oración y enseguida de las

lecturas permite que las palabras penetren más profundamente. ¿Por qué

es que automáticamente cerramos los ojos cuando el celebrante dice:

"oremos"? Es porque al cerrar nuestros ojos, abrimos nuestras almas. Es

lo mismo con el silencio. El silencio abre el alma al Dios oculto, que

habla a través de su palabra. Al meditar la palabra en silencio, nos lleva

al Dios invisible que está oculto en el silencio. El silencio nos permite

reflexionar sobre lo indescriptible.

No es sólo que la misa debe enfatizar periódicamente mo-

mentos de silencio. Toda la Misa debe estar inspirada por el silencio. El

silencio no es una interrupción entre las palabras y cantos; las palabras y

los cantos surgen del silencio. No es que la Misa debe ser en silencio,

sino que debe reflejar el carácter de Dios, quien es el protagonista de la

liturgia. Dado a que es Cristo quien realiza la obra de nuestra salvación

en la liturgia, la liturgia debe reflejar la humilde tranquilidad, sirviente

salvador que no "llora o levanta su voz o se hace escuchar en las ca-

lles." (Mt 12:19; Is 42: 2.).

Estoy agradecido con James Cavanagh por esta reflexión

que me llega a mí en lo personal. Si Dios quiere, nos podemos es-

merar más en fomentar un espíritu de silencio en nuestras liturgias

y en nuestra Iglesia. Yo, en lo personal, sé que puedo mejorar en

mantener algunos momentos de silencio durante la celebración de

la Misa. Y, sé que puedo mejorar cuando hablo con otras personas,

al retirarme de la parte principal del templo, para así no perturbar

a las personas que se encuentran orando antes y después de Misa y

de tal manera permitirles el silencio para reflexionar. En este as-

pecto estamos bien, pero siempre hay espacio para mejorar. Santa

María tiene la bendición de tener un gran vestíbulo y áreas som-

breadas afuera del templo. Estos son la mejor ubicación para ha-

blar con otras personas antes y después de la misa.

Retiro en Español de Rachel’s Vineyard

No se Conforme a la Mentalidad de Este Siglo San Pablo nos dice: “No se conformen a la mentalidad de este si-glo...pero traten de discernir lo que es bueno y agradable…” Desde la decisión Roe v Wade, alrededor de 60 millones de niños inocentes han perdido su derecho, dado por Dios, para vivir. Toda una clase de personas, los niños en el vientre materno, han sido relegados a la condición de “bien mueble”, propiedad personal, que pueden ser eliminados por los que son mas poderosos que ellos. No tienen poder para resistir. Están sujetos al abuso y la destruc-ción por los que tienen mas poder, es decir, el poder del Estado. No tienen ninguna voz que se escuche, excepto la nuestra. Sin duda, el asesinato de niños inocentes en el vientre materno es el mal moral preeminente de nuestra era. Es por esta razón que no debemos conformarnos con esta grave injusticia. Como nos dice San Pablo, tenemos que en vez, ponernos de pie del lado de la verdad y la justicia y de “lo que es bueno y agradable a Dios”. Debemos reconocer lo que tanto la ciencia medica como la justicia natural nos dicen: los niños en el vientre de la madre son perso-nas humanas con un derecho inalienable a la vida. Sin duda, el tema mas importante de los derechos humanos de nuestra época es el de proteger nuestros “primeros prójimos”- - -los niños en el vientre materno. El útero es la “primera casa” de toda la raza humana y la defensa de ellos es una cuestión de solidaridad con el prójimo y del amor por los pobres. No debemos permanecer impasi-bles mientras miles de niños cada día son desalojados y matados! Nuestro llamado (como San Pablo nos recuerda) es reemplazar la actual cultura de la muerte con una nueva cultura de la vida y de la civilización del amor.

lo que deben.
