Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Lent, A Season of Joyful Sacrifice and Spiritual Growth

As the holy season of Lent begins this Ash Wednesday, February 10, we are encouraged by the Church to undertake penances in three traditional ways: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Our Lenten Fridays offer you a great opportunity to combine all three. Come for a meatless meal at 6 P.M. to the second floor of the Lyceum (313 Duke Street). There will be a basket for donations that will be given to the less fortunate. On two of the Fridays (2/19 and 3/18), we will be hosting a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form celebrated by Father James Bradley. Then join us in the church at 7 P.M. as we pray the Stations of the Cross, meditating on the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Two priests will be available for you to receive the Sacrament of Penance. Remember that it is a serious obligation for those fourteen years of age and older to keep the Fridays of Lent meatless. This sacrifice should help us to identify with Christ Crucified who suffered His Passion on Good Friday. Let us keep in mind the poor during this season of sacrifice and strive to meet their needs through charitable giving through the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal.

Lenten Prayer for Spiritual Renewal

God, heavenly Father, look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy Season of Lent. By the good works You inspire, help me to discipline my body and to be renewed in spirit.

Without You I can do nothing. By Your Spirit help me to know what is right and to be eager in doing Your will. Teach me to find new life through penance. Keep me from sin, and help me live by Your commandment of love. God of love, bring me back to You. Send Your Spirit to make me strong in faith and active in good works. May my acts of penance bring me Your forgiveness, open my heart to Your love, and prepare me for the coming feast of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Lord, during this Lenten Season, nourish me with Your Word of life and make me one with You in love and prayer.

Fill my heart with Your love and keep me faithful to the Gospel of Christ. Give me the grace to rise above my human weakness. Give me new life by Your Sacraments, especially the Mass.

Father, our source of life, I reach out with joy to grasp Your hand; let me walk more readily in Your ways. Guide me in Your gentle mercy, for left to myself I cannot do Your Will.

Father of love, source of all blessings, help me to pass from my old life of sin to the new life of grace. Prepare me for the glory of Your Kingdom. I ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES Oh ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick,

Refuge of Sinners, Comfortess of the Afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Look upon me with mercy.

When you appeared in the grotto of Lourdes, you made it a privileged sanctuary where you dispense your favors, and where many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.

I come, therefore, with unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. My loving Mother, obtain my request. I will try to imitate

your virtues so that I may one day share your company and bless you in eternity. Amen.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

PRO-LIFE CORNER

In the life of the body a man is sometimes sick, and unless he takes medicine, he will die.

Even so in the spiritual life a man is sick on account of sin. For that reason he needs medicine so that he

may be restored to health; and this grace is bestowed in the Sacrament of Penance.

Saint Thomas Aquinas

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

HOLY FATHER’S INTENTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY

Universal: Care for Creation That we may take good care of creation–a gift freely given–cultivating

and protecting it for future generations.

Evangelization: Asia That opportunities may increase for dialogue and encounter between the

Christian faith and the peoples of Asia.

2016 BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL BEGINS!

Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy!

This weekend every family in our parish will be asked to complete a Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) pledge form at Mass. If you have already donated through the mail or online or are not able to participate, there will be places to note that on the form. After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs, offices and ministries that serve people in need and further Jesus’ Mission in our diocese.

PRAY DURING 40 DAYS FOR LIFESPRING CAMPAIGN! Volunteer for a weekly hour or more during the vigil between February 10 and March 20. St. Mary’s will participate in the vigil at the Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic at 101 S. Whiting St. near Landmark Mall. No formal sign-up is required – come and pray to be a visible witness to the sanctity of human life. For questions, signs, literature, please contact Sara Dina of 40 Days for Life at 571.218.6224.

ST. MARY’S PLAYGROUP meets on Monday mornings (except holidays) at the Lyceum, local no- or low-cost venues or, in comfortable weather, local parks. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Kerri Griffin at [email protected].

NUN RUN (CONVENT VISITS) FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS The FIAT Discernment Group is hosting a Nun Run on Saturday, February 20 from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. Visit convents, pray and visit with sisters, and learn more about their missions and their daily lives. Cost is $20 and includes lunch and transportation for the day. For more information and to register, please contact the Office of Vocations by February 10 at 703.841.2514 or [email protected].

THE LEGION OF MARY invites men and women who desire to grow closer to Jesus, to join them Monday evenings at 7:35 P.M. in the St. Ann & Joachim Room of the Lyceum. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. The Legion is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor. Fr. Andrew Haissig serves as spiritual director.

COME PRAY THE ROSARY every third Saturday following the 8:30 A.M. Mass. In conjunction with the International 40 Days for Life Campaign, this month and during March, we will pray in front of the Alexandria Women’s Health Clinic at 101 S. Whiting St. near Landmark Mall with other St. Mary’s parishioners and those in the prolife community. Our next gathering to pray for pregnant mothers and their unborn children will be February 20. If you need transportation to the clinic, please contact Suzan Cummins at 703.782.6757.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY DINNER & HOOLEY Please join us Sunday, March 13 at 6 P.M.

at St. Mary School, to benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society. Contact Pat Troy at 703.615.9453.

DONUT SALE: St. Mary’s Boy Scout Troop 301 will be selling doughnuts after all the Masses this weekend to raise funds for their troop activities.

We adore You O Christ and we praise You, because by Your holy Cross You have redeemed the world.

CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA Thank you for your generous donations to the Collection for the Church in

Latin America. Your support helps ensure that people have adequate catechesis, marriage and family life programs, and strong religious and

seminarian formation among other programs. Thank you for taking this opportunity to share your faith.

To learn more about how your donations are making a difference, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU: Each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Arlington and the Archdiocese of Washington will have Confessions available every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 during Lent. If you have been reluctant to come to the Sacrament or have been away for some time, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with Christ and His Church. Learn more at www.the-light-is-on.org.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays during Lent at 7:00 P.M. in the Church,

with Confessions.

PREPARATION FOR LENT

FAST AND ABSTINENCE: Everyone over 14 years of age is bound to observe abstinence (no meat). Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays during Lent and Ash Wednesday. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, everyone between the ages of 18 and 60 years of age is bound to observe the law of fast. On these two days only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs; but together they should not equal another full meal. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of both fast and abstinence.

“The devil does not bring sinners to hell with their eyes open: he first blinds them with the malice of their own sins. Before we fall into sin,

the enemy labors to blind us, that we may not see the evil we do and the ruin we bring upon ourselves by offending God.

After we commit sin, he seeks to make us dumb, that, through shame, we may conceal our guilt in confession.”

Saint Alphonsus Liguori

2015 GIFT FOR LIFE THANK YOU! Thank you for supporting the 2015 Advent Gabriel Project/Project Rachel “Gift for Life” campaign. Parishioners donated over $168,000 to date, helping fund pre-natal care for mothers in need, and professional counseling and retreats for the post abortive. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity!
