Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

Come Lord Jesus!

The word “advent” is a composition of two Latin words– ad meaning “to” or “toward” and ventus (from venire) meaning “to come”. Advent literally means to come toward or to approach. Liturgically speaking, Advent is the holy season of four weeks preceding the solemn feast of Christmas during which Christians prepare for Christ’s coming into the world. Traditionally, the saints and mystics have encouraged meditations on not one but three comings of Christ - in History, in Mystery, and in Majesty. Over the next weeks we will reflect on these three points. Today we will focus on Christ’s coming in History.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit and the free cooperation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Eternal Word of the Father became flesh and entered human history. This coming of Christ ushered in the messianic age - the age of the Church and the Spirit - 2015 years ago. The numerous nativity scenes which are displayed in homes and churches help to make present again Christ’s arrival in Bethlehem. In union with St. Joseph and Our Blessed Lady, Christians ponder the humility of God and His great love for each human person. With this in mind, let us prepare for Christ’s coming through study, prayer, penance, and acts of charity. Especially recommended for study is the Gospel of Saint Luke, chapters 1 and 2. Next week we will reflect on Christ’s coming in Mystery.

Rejoice, O daughter of Sion, and be jubilantly glad, O daughter of Israel. Behold, thy Lord cometh,

and in His day a great light shall arise; the mountains shall drop down sweetness and the hills

shall flow with milk and honey, for the Great Prophet shall come and He shall renew Jerusalem.

Behold, thy God cometh, the Man of the House of David, to sit upon the throne; and you shall see and

your heart shall rejoice.

Let us pray: O Lord, stir up Thy power, we beg Thee, and come, that by Thy protection we may deserve

to be rescued from the threatening dangers of our sins and be saved by Thy deliverance. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

ADVENT PRAYER Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God's own work for justice. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace: peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father's joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise in me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen.

To the many who have provided regularly to the Poor Box a humble THANK YOU; to those who consistently support us with direct contributions (space constrains naming you all!) a bountiful THANK YOU; to our St Mary’s parishioners whose generosity allowed us to assist over 1,500 household members in Alexandria this past fiscal year a profound THANK YOU; to Fr Hathaway and all our dedicated clergy and staff at St Mary’s a gracious THANK YOU. To our newest members who have actively answered Pope Francis’ call to commit to our work with the poor - Judy Abid, Chris and Zoe Arantz, Suzanne Backus, Ty Balzer, John Chimento, Carmen Federle, Angela Flood, Debra Forrestel, Michael Gilroy, Dan and Amy Johnson, Andrew Kowal, Maura Lindsay, Matt Mayberry, Reecca McCuellers, Robert McLaughlin, Elise Morris, Jennifer Smith, Dennis Sutsko, Kelly Wilkinson, Terry Wilson, Kay Woodard a prodigious THANK YOU and lastly and especially to all our established members and our Samaritans who have done the day to day service duty through the years a most dutiful THANK YOU.

THE LEGION OF MARY invites men and women who desire to grow closer to Jesus, to join them Monday evenings at 7:35 P.M. in the St. Ann & Joachim Room of the Lyceum. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. The Legion is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor. Fr. Andrew Haissig serves as spiritual director.

“It is not the actual physical exertion that counts toward a man's progress, nor the nature of the task, but the spirit of faith

with which it is undertaken.” -Saint Francis Xavier

in it, but not in the same degree.”
