Comments from Deacon Dale Brown We get a glimpse of life in the first "parish" - in
Jerusalem, soon after the Resurrection - in today's
First Reading. Three characteristics stand out, which
can help us reflect on our own Christian identity
even today. First, the community of believers is
steadily growing. The Church is a living body of
believers in Christ, and living things are meant to
grow. If a community of Christians is not growing,
something is wrong; ours is a missionary religion.
Christ sent His Apostles to preach His Word to all
people; the Church is meant to spread into every
corner of time and space. Second, there is a clear
structure of authority in the Church community. The
Twelve Apostles are its leaders, as Jesus intended,
and they solve the new problem that arises by
ordaining the first Deacons. Today as well, every
Catholic community is organized with the same
hierarchical structure. First there is the pope, the
successor St Peter, leader of the Twelve Apostles.
Then there is the local bishop, successor of those
Apostles. Then there is the pastor of the parish, the
bishop's representative for a specific area. None of
them govern by their own authority. Rather, they
receive their authority from Christ, through the
sacrament of orders. By obeying them, in matters of
faith and morals, Christians are obeying Christ
Himself. Finally, even at the very beginning of the
Church, we see that there are disagreements among
believers. The Greek-speaking believers complain
about being treated as second-class Christians. This
is the point I would like to focus on today. Our faith
in Christ does not make us perfect right away, just
as it did not make the first Christians perfect right
away. Spiritual growth is a life-long process. The
first Christians had to work through conflicts and
selfish tendencies; so, do we all.
We look forward to seeing you the weekend of the
16th and 17th. Please watch all our website and
Facebook announcements pertaining to the social
distance rules we must all follow. We are working
on ways to get through this and will need volunteers
to help, and patience from every one during these
upcoming weeks. God Bless and HAPPY
MOTHERS DAY!

May 10-16 May 10 – MOTHER’DAY is a special day in the USA to
honor all MOTHERS. It was founded by Anna Jarvis (from
W. VA) in the early 20th century, who continued the work
started by her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, who cared for
wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War
(1861-1865). She believed that mothers care more for you
than any other person in the world. In 1914, President Wood-
row Wilson signed a proclamation designating the 2nd Sunday
of May as a special day to honor all mothers.
May 13 – Feast Day of OUR LADY OF FATIMA, a title
given to the BVM based upon the famed 1917 Marian appari-
tions in Fatima, Portugal by 3 shepherd children, Lucia dos
Santos, & Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
May 14 – Feast Day of St. Matthias, Apostle of Jesus
Christ, chosen after the Resurrection to replace Judas. St.
Matthias had followed Jesus since His baptism by John the
Baptist.
May 16 – ARMED FORCES DAY – a day to pay tribute to
the men & women who serve in the US Armed Forces, origi-
nated by President Truman and established as a national holi-
day by President Kennedy.

Prayer for Pregnant Mothers
Dear Father, we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs.
Comfort their mothers & fathers during the time they are growing & developing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of
persons the strength to come into this world, to fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, & loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.
Amen.
