STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT First Sunday in Lent The waters of Baptism make us part of the

covenant in Christ. But the Bishops’ Pastoral

Letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the Sacrament of Baptism…that people place their gifts, their resources — their selves — at God’s service in and through the Church” (Our Sunday Visitor, ibid., page 16).

MASS CANCELLATION POLICY

When the New Bedford school department

cancels classes due to storm conditions, daily

Mass will also be canceled along with any and

all parish events The Parish Office will also be

closed. Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses are

never canceled as they are Masses of

obligation; daily Masses are devotional and no

meetings are more important than safety. For cancellations of Faith Formation Classes and other cancellations in the parish, please check the website.

STEWARDSHIP:A CELEBRATING COMMUNITY A stewardship and evangelizing parish is a

CELEBRATING COMMUNITY. It is spirit

filled and joyful. The parish celebrates faith. It celebrates this faith by a vibrant celebration of

Mass. Joy in singing, joy, awe and wonder in

praying. Are you brining joy into the Mass. Joy

can co-exist with reverence. If we are sad, our

singing lethargic or non existent, our responses

weak, we are not celebrating the joy of salva-

tion won for us by Christ. St. Mary’s cele-

brates all walks of life and ethnicities, making

them feel important and making them feel they

belong to the parish.

Bishop da Cunha’s 2018 Lenten Message

Dear Friends,

Many of us remember - maybe even with some nostalgia - when Lent was a time of real Penance and sacrifice. The Church still teaches us that Lent is a special time of conversion; that Penance and sacrifice are essential practices to help us in the process of change, which leads to sanctification. Obviously, Penance and sacrifice are not limited to the practice of Fasting and Abstinence - although these are good and practical ways to incorporate sacrific-es into our daily lives. This is not meant to indicate that our spirit is good or our body is bad. However, bodily discipline and some sacrifices are good for spirit and body. When we fail to recognize our need for sacrifice, we fail to acknowledge our need for conver-sion. Sacrifices are not meant to be an end in themselves; they are always meant as a means to conversion and sanctification.

Lent is a time to remember all that Jesus did for us and to acknowledge all He was willing to suffer for us. By accepting and embracing our own sufferings, we share in the sufferings of Christ, so that we can also share in His Resurrection. But who wants to suffer? No one likes to face suffering. We do all we can to avoid suffering. We try to eat well, exercise, visit the doctor, have our annual check-up; all this to avoid sickness and suffering. However, we also know that we cannot fully avoid suffering. No one is immune to the evils that surround us and no one is exempt from the suffering that befalls us. One of the greatest problems of humanity is to learn how to suffer. Do we realize that suffering can also be a path to happiness, fulfillment, transformation and Salvation?

No one is ready to accept suffering until they know the good it does. Since suffering is unavoidable, we might as well learn to accept it and discover its value. “The one who faces suffering for itself is a masochist, the one who suffers for a superior ideal is a wise person” (Huberto Rohden). That is what Jesus did and taught us to do. Don’t suffer aimlessly. Jesus knew that His sufferings were not useless; He knew that He was saving the world through His suffering. That is why He was able to accept it lovingly and peacefully. “Son though He was, He learned obedience from what He suffered; and when He was made perfect, He became the source of eternal Salvation for all who obey Him” (Hebrews 5:8). The one who rebels against suffering faces two evils instead of one.

When, like Jesus, we learn how to make our sufferings meaningful and redemptive; when we learn how to offer our sufferings to God as an oblation, as a sacrifice, as a prayer for us and for others, our sufferings will be easier to bear. As St. Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans, “we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that afflic-tion produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

Let us keep the Spirit of Lent alive in our families, our homes, our parishes, our schools and in our own lives. Let us keep the Spirit of Sacrifice, and let us teach our children the value of making Pen-ance and sacrifice during Lent. Let us all take time during Lent to pray together as a family so that the future generations will not forget that Jesus suffered and died to save us.

Diocese of Fall River CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD

(CLOW): This ministry involves participants to

share the Word of God with children pre-school

through Grade 3. Children are blessed during a

Sunday morning Mass and are sent forth with

adult leaders to the Memorial Chapel. Using ap-

proved texts that follow the same readings that

adults share on each Sunday, the children listen

and respond to the Word of God. They listen to an

age-appropriate homily by one of the adult team

members. They join the assembly for the Liturgy

of the Eucharist. We are looking to form a team of

Adults to lead our young people. If you are willing

to help in this ministry, please contact Fr. Dan at

the office or email at [email protected].

Faith Formation “Let the children come to me…” Luke 16:18

There are no Faith Formation Classes this weekend. Classes will resume next Sun-day, February 25th. All 1st Communion Candidates will be measured on Sunday, February 25th. They are to report to the Gym at All Saints Catholic School for

9:30. Students who attend a Catholic School will be dismissed as soon as they are measured.

What We Are Learning: The Mass is the greatest way to worship God. During Mass we Praise and Thank God, Listen to God’s Word, Remember Jesus’ life, Death and Resurrection and we Celebrate Jesus’ gift of Himself in the Eucharist.

Upcoming Dates to Remember: February 25th – Confirmation Letters to Fr. Dan due.
