Perhaps you or a loved one is unable to attend Mass, perhaps due to a surgery, chronic illness, or difficulty in mobility… It is important that each parishioner knows they are a part of our community, even when not able to actively participate. Each of us is in need of Christ’s presence in our lives… Ministers of Care bring the Eucharist to the homebound and offer prayer. Please call the church office if you or a loved one is in need of the Eucharist being brought to the home. They will contact me to arrange for a visit. FAREWELL After a recent mass a young mother greeted me. She introduced her son and reminded me that I had baptized him. She then, informed me that he would be making his first communion next Spring. More than any-thing else I think this summarized my joy at having served the people of St. Mary for the past 15 years, building up the body of Christ. As St. Paul writes we are all a part of the Body of Christ and as such we all have a role in promoting His Gospel. Our pastor Fr. Russell spoke to me about a lesson he learned from his first pastor. He said it is our job to plant seeds, we plant them and trust God that they will grow. More than anything else I hope that is what I have done, planted seeds. Hopefully that young man will eventually receive confirmation. Some day he might become a loving father or even a priest. It is the responsibility of all of us to nourish the Body of Christ with our prayers and good example, trusting the growth to Jesus. Scripture compares the love that Jesus has for you to that of a groom for his bride. He loves you so much and He only wants you to be happy with him for all eternity. He shared our human life with us, so that someday we might share His divinity. That is the message He came to deliver 2000 years ago, that is the message He continually invites us to share with one another. I wish there was some way that I could say good-bye that would be memorable, that would let you all know what a privilege it was to serve you. But human words cannot describe what I want to say. So I will say it in the words of the Divine Jesus. “Love God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with your whole mind. Love your neighbor. Love your-self”. May His peace which is beyond all understanding be with you now and always.

In our second reading this weekend, St. James offers strong words to those who have put their trust in riches. He condemns them because of their efforts to live a life of luxury rather than to live the life of a good disciple of Jesus Christ. While being wealthy is not necessarily a bad thing in itself, we know that it can certainly be a distrac-tion at times from the life that Jesus calls us to. When we have lots of money, we start to put our trust in ourselves rather than in the plan of Jesus. We start to believe that we are the ones in control and that we can take care of our-selves. However, this is not what Jesus wants from us. He wants us to put our trust completely in Him, not in our possessions or wealth. This is why poverty can be a help-ful way for us to discern God’s Will in our lives. When we choose to live poverty in different ways, we take the distractions out of our lives and force ourselves to trust in Jesus more. Try to find ways to “trim the fat” in your life. Perhaps donate some of your possessions to those in need, some of your money to charities, and some of your time to volunteering efforts. Choosing poverty is a very helpful way for us to remember to focus our lives outside of our-selves. Let Jesus be the one to take care of you, and let Him be the one to make you truly rich.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples: “Anyone who gives you a drink of water
because you belong to Christ will not, I assure you, go without his reward.” On September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent
de Paul. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are on the front line in
laboring for the poor, they are among the first to know their real needs.
This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to
assist many families, providing monies for food, for utility, rent and other bills. God bless you!
St. James warns in today’s second reading that those who hoard their wealth and live only
for themselves will be condemned. But in the Gospel, Jesus assures us that all who
give of themselves for His sake will be rewarded.

The Ministry of Care Needs You!!! This ministry involves bringing Holy Communion to homebound, facility bound, or hospitalized people. It is a life-changing experience, to be a part of these lives. The privilege of serving them is rewarding. And never say, “Oh, I couldn’t do that!” Don’t underesti-mate God’s gifts!
We need a person, to offer communion at Kishwaukee Hospital every other Thursday. This service takes about 1 hour or so. The time of day is flexible, ac-cording to the minister’s schedule.

Feast Day – October 1
She was born on January 2, 1873, at Aleçon, France, the youngest of nine children born to Louis and
Zélie Martin, who were elevated to sainthood on October 18, 2015. (The first married couple to be canonized together.) Her mother died when she was four years old and she suffered a deep sadness and sense of loss that affected her for the next eight years. On Christmas Day, 1886, she experienced a profound conversion. She developed a great love for the missionary life of the Church, her desire for prayer increased, and she began her plan to enter the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, where her two sisters, Pauline and Mary were members. By dispensation she entered the Carmelites on April 9, 1888, and was professed on September 8, 1890. For the next seven years, she lived a life of prayer, fulfilling her routine duties with extraordinary faithfulness and love. She guided the novices of her community for the last four years of her life until she died on September 30, 1897, from a painful condition of tuberculosis. After her death her spiritual autobiography, The Story of a Soul, revealed her remarkable interior life. Also known as “the Little Flower”. She has inspired millions of people by the spirit of her “little way”.
