A LETTER FROM OUR PARISH ADMINISTRATOR

Pope Francis: Jesus embraces “the outcast, the untouchables”

“I believe that many Catholics believe themselves to be perfect and despise others. This is sad”, the pope said recently in an off-the-cuff remark during his weekly general audience. “We who are used to experiencing the forgiveness of sins, perhaps a little too ‘cheaply’, should sometimes remember how much we cost the love of God”. Jesus did not die on the Cross because he healed the sick, called for mercy or preached the beatitudes, but because he forgave sins, Pope Francis told the faithful gathered for his weekly gen-eral audience. Jesus embraces “those who are outcast, ‘untouchable’,” the pope said. “With a compassion that literally causes him to tremble in his depths, he reveals the merciful heart of God”. Quoting from the reading where Mary Magdalene washed Jesus’ feet causing disconcertment and scandal, Francis emphasized how much this “astonishing attitude” was revolutionary. “According to the mentality at the time, the separation between the saint and the sinner, between the pure and impure, had to be clear,” the pope said in the Paul VI hall in the Vatican. “But Jesus’ attitude is different.” The Son of God does not shy away from the lepers, the possessed, the sick and the marginalized. The pope stressed that the love that Christ bore for the “untouchables” (referencing the Hindu caste system and the people who are too low to qualify for it) deeply shook his contemporaries. “I believe that many Catholics believe themselves to be perfect and despise others. This is sad”, the pope said in an off-the-cuff remark. “We who are used to experiencing the forgiveness of sins, perhaps a little too “cheaply”, should sometimes remember how much we cost the love of God,” he added. When Jesus sees someone who suffers, he takes in that suffering and does not expect, as the stoics did, that the pain be endured with heroism. “Jesus feels compassion,” Francis said, zeroing in on a topic dear to his pontificate: Mercy. The pope mentioned all those who live a sad life because no one is willing to look at them in the eyes in a different way, “with the heart of God, meaning with hope”. Early on, Jesus got in trouble for forgiving the sins of the marginalized. Francis referred to the Gospel, when Jesus forgave the sins of a paralyzed and sinful man, knowing that the pain that the man felt in his soul was much graver than his physical illness. Jesus did not accept that human beings live forever with the “ineradicable tattoo” of sin. “Not only are they psychologically reassured, because they are freed from guilt,” the pope said. “Jesus does much more: He offers people who have made mistakes the hope of a new life, a life marked by love”. Francis listed the many sinners who filled the ranks of the beginnings of the Church, from the tax collector Matthew to the wealthy and corrupt Zacchaeus. “God did not choose people who never made mistakes to be the first dough to create his Church,” Pope Francis said. “The Church is a people of sinners who experience the mercy and the forgiveness of Christ”. We are all in need of God’s forgiveness in order to transform ourselves and have hope every day, the pope added. “To those who understood this basic truth, God gifts the most beautiful mission in the world,” Pope Francis concluded, “to show love for their brothers and sisters, and the announcement of a mercy that He does not deny to anyone.” Have a blessed week. Father Aidan O’ Boyle

MEMORIAL MASS FOR DECEASED CHILDREN OF ST. MARY OF THE WOODS

On Tuesday evening, September 12th at 7:00 pm

Mass will be celebrated to honor the memory of the deceased children of our parish.

If you have the name of a deceased child (from stillborn through adult) that you would like to have remembered at this Mass, you may enter the name in our Memory Book that evening. We also encourage anyone who has despaired over the loss of a baby through miscarriage or abortion to join us at this special Mass. Please note this Mass is open to everyone to attend (not just families who have lost a child). We support one another by our presence. This is often the greatest encouragement to grieving families. Your presence at this Mass will offer courage and hope. Do plan on attending, if you can.

To All 4th and 5th Grade Moms:

We would like to invite you and your daughter to attend the

Mother/Daughter Tea

that will be held in the Parish Hall on

Sunday, September 17 from 12:30-3:00.

It is a wonderful way to spend a few hours with your daughter and to hear some great speakers

who will discuss growing up/puberty/body changes/positive self image. Speakers will include

Pediatrician Dr. Erin Garofoli, Motivational Speaker Bridgid Chambers and more! We are hoping to incorporate a speaker about media/

internet as well.

The cost is $25 per mother/daughter pair.

Please register by September 13th at: www.events.org/tea2017.

Entertainment and food abounded at the “Seniors” early summer meetings

July was a Balance and Fall Prevention program from St. Benedicts of the Glen. Our August meeting featured a game day ,crazy hats, and pizza. We will start our fall season on September 13, 2017 with a presentation from AMADA Health Care on LIVING A HAPPY HEALTHY LIFE NY Jenny Novy. SMOW Principal Mrs. Mary Yamoah will also inform us of volunteer opportu-nities at our school. The October 11, 2017 meeting will feature the return of the SMOW Antiques Road Show. Our November 8, 2017 Meeting will a presentation by The Road Scholar Organization which combines travel with educational opportunities.

Remember, we are looking for volunteers to serve as officers for the coming year, If you have not paid your 2017-2018 dues yet , please do so.

PARISH LIFE

ATTENTION SMOW SENIORS! The next meeting of the SMOW Seniors will be on Wednesday, September 13th, at 9:30 A.M. in the Par-ish Hall. Now that school is back in session, parking will be permitted in the Parking Lot IN FRONT OF CHURCH ONLY! Since we need to vacate both the Parish Hall and the Parking Lot no later than 11:15 A.M., our meeting will begin promptly at 9:30 A.M. There will be two presentations made at this meeting. The first will be about opportunities for our members to volunteer in our school, presented once again by Mrs. Mary Yamoah, our principal. The second will be a presentation by our fellow parishioner Jenny Novy (with AMADA Senior Care) on LIVING A HAPPY HEALTHY LIFE. We look forward with enthusiasm to the information and assistance both of these presentations will provide us. Once again (hopefully for the last time), DUES in the amount of $24.00 will be collected. The club operates on a July through June fiscal year, and as of this time, well over 50 of our 60+ members have already paid. Our ability to serve refreshments, as well as pay for special speakers and events, is dependent on your prompt payment of dues. Thank you for your assis-tance to the club in this matter. An important event for our October SMOW Seniors meeting will be the ELECTION OF OFFICERS to manage our Club for the coming year. All of our officers have done an extremely fine job in managing the Club over the past two years, and as a result, St. Mary of the Woods Parish has a lively, vibrant and successful Seniors club! However, some of them may want to step down, so we need candidates to run for office, and we respectfully ask ALL of our members to consider a run for one of these offices: President, Vice-President, Secretary, or Treasurer. Please remember that the continued success of our Club and its activities DEPENDS ENTIRELY ON ALL OF OUR MEMBERS! If no one is willing to volunteer to manage the club, inevitably the club will shrink to the point that it won’t exist anymore, and surely we wouldn’t want that to happen! So please be willing to “step up to the plate” and help manage YOUR senior club by running for an office! Thank you! We look forward to seeing everyone at the September 13th meeting!

PARISH DIRECTORY & TRANSFORMATION

NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED MOTHER This past week we celebrated the birthday of the Blessed Mother (September 8). There are many feasts and celebra ons for the Mother of God, and each one is unique and special in its own right. Certainly this is true with the birthday recogni on. As you may have noted from our on-going recogni on of saints, in most instances the feast day is on or about the date of death (if known) of that individual. The date of death represents entering into eternal life with Christ. In Mary’s case, however, we celebrate the birth date for this feast. As we know from our other discussions, and the o en men oned tle of the Immaculate Concep on, Mary came into this world full of grace. An exact date of birth is unknown, but the Church celebrates the na vity of the Blessed Mother on September 8. It was the privilege of Mary to become the Mother of Jesus. As she brought Jesus into our world, so she con nues to bring Jesus into our lives and our hearts. A love of Mary is concurrent with a love of her Son, Jesus. We have learned many special prayers addressed to Mary, seeking her love, guidance, intercession and pro-tec on. Perhaps you have a favorite among the more common ones: The Hail Mary, the Memorare, Salve Regina, or the pe ons from the Litany o he Blessed Mother. Whatever communica on you invoke, speak o en and openly with the Mother of God and our Blessed Mother. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we sendup our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and a er this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.

BEYOND OUR PARISH

Traveling this fall season? Why not bring in those small soaps, shampoos etc. supplied by your hotel to St. Mary of the Woods to benefit those in need. We can get these items to soup kitchens, food pantries, or specialized housing. We’ll have a basket under the table in the Narthex to gather these items. Let’s remember those less fortunate as we travel this year. Your donation will benefit a local soup kitchen.
