CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF CARING The History of Mary Immaculate Health/Care Services
In 1867, Fr. James H.D. Taafe, a Dominican priest serving in Lawrence, announced plans for the
first charitable facility in the City-- an orphanage to care for poor and sick children. At his
request, five Sisters of Charity of Montreal, “Grey Nuns,” traveled to Lawrence and arrived for
the dedication of the Protectory of Mary Immaculate on February 9, 1868. The Protectory (also known as
“The Little Red House”) was built on the present site of Mary Immaculate Church.
During the next century, the Grey Nuns filled many roles in Lawrence serving as “mothers,” teachers and
nurses for more the 7,000 orphans and providing a home for almost 2,500 elderly. Their compassion was
endless in a city known for its depression, and poor health conditions.
As the needs of the community grew, so did the response of the Protectory. By 1901, Fr. Taafe’s Little Red
House could no longer accommodate all the orphans and elderly women needing care. Construction was
begun on a large brick building to meet the expanding needs.
By the 1950’s, Mary Immaculate had come to serve an increasing number of elderly, many of whom had
worked in the mills but who now had no support. In 1954, The Protectory of Mary Immaculate was officially
licensed as a nursing home. A new, spacious 170 bed nursing center designed for multi-level nursing and
rehabilitative care was opened in 1971. A fourth floor was added, including a specially designed unit for those
with Alzheimer’s disease.
Independent and assisted living facilities and an Adult Day Center were added in the 1980’s.
In 1986 the name was changed to Mary Immaculate. Now sponsored by Covenant Health, Mary Immaculate
has grown far beyond the expectations of those who began the Protectory 150 years ago. What distinguishes
Mary Immaculate today is its continuum of care designed to meet the broad life-support needs of older adults.
The Legacy of the Grey Nuns and remains committed to continue our Mission to provide healing and care for
the whole person, in service to all in our communities.

First Reading: Wisdom 7:7-11 - This poem discusses how the spirit of wisdom is far more beautiful than any riches could be. All gold is no more than sand when compared to the importance of wisdom, which often leads people to the other good things in life.
Second Reading: Hebrews 4:12-13 - God’s perception of people is called “sharper than any two-edged sword.” God is able to know the thoughts and feelings of all his people. We can hide nothing from him, and will need to account for all he has seen in us.
Gospel: Mark 10:17-30 - A man asks Jesus how he can share in everlasting life. Jesus tells him to sell his possessions and travel with them. The man refuses and Jesus tells his disciples how difficult it is for a rich person to enter heaven if they are too concerned with their possessions. The disciples remind Jesus that they gave up everything for him, but he assures them they will be rewarded with everlasting life. difficult to let go of those things that stand in the way of
being fully committed to following Jesus.
What are those things in your life that hinder you from
being a disciple of Jesus? Hear the words of Jesus, “all
things are possible with God” and trust that God will help
you to live as a committed disciple now!

Last weekend, Father Carlos spoke at some of the
Masses about the financial challenges facing our
parish. Our parishioners, as you can see, are
generous and many are keeping the commitment they
made last year to Increase their Offertory.
We will publish in November the Annual Report for
last fiscal year (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018) Each
week, in addition to your offertory contribution we
will print some of the expenses during the previous
week.
A Broken Pipe. Cost: $2,200
Two weeks ago a pipe broke and leaked from the
second floor to the basement of the friary. The pipe
had to be replaced. This was an unexpected expense
but also points out the fact that the friary/office
building is old

October: Respect Life Month Care of our Elders
Our celebration of 150 years of caring at Mary Immaculate calls into focus the care of our elders. Many of our elders are still able to live at home and care for themselves, maybe with some assistance. Some grandparents are now raising their grandchildren. Probably in past years many families cared for their older parents/relatives in their homes. This reality has changed. Many facilities (independent/assisted living and nursing homes) provide various levels of care. Home attendants and visiting nurses and therapists offer help. However, we must recognize not all elders have the opportunities for such services. In addition to physical and health needs there are also social and spiritual needs. As families live at a distance and friends die and sometimes confined to their homes there is a certain loneliness and solitude. We also need to be mindful that at times our elders are victims of abuse and fraud. Respect for life calls us to insure that our elders maintain a good quality of life.

Envelopes for the All Souls Novena were included in your monthly envelopes and are available in the vestibule of the church and the parish office. The names will be entered in the Book of Remembrance and placed on the altar at each Mass during the Novena. You may place these envelopes in the collection basket.
