National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual
week-long celebration of the Catholic Church in the United
States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood,
diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education,
and to renew our prayers and support for those who are
considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began
in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday
of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebration was moved
to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which
falls on January 13 in 2013. Beginning in 2014, NVAW was
moved to the first full week of November.
Suggested prayer:
LORD JESUS, we ask you to send your people the servers
you need. Choose from our parishes, from our homes, our
schools and universities an abundant harvest of ardent
apostles for your Kingdom: priests, religious, deacons,
missionaries and secular apostles; and help those called by
You to never lose consciousness of the greatness and
necessity of their vocation.
Oh, Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, teach those who are
called to say yes with joy, as you did at the Annunciation.

La Semana Nacional de Concientización sobre las
Vocaciones (NVAW, por sus siglas en inglés) es una
celebración anual de una semana de la Iglesia Católica en los
Estados Unidos dedicada a promover las vocaciones al
sacerdocio, el diaconado y la vida consagrada a través de la
oración y la educación, y para renovar nuestras oraciones y
apoyo para aquellos que están considerando una de estas
vocaciones particulares. La NVAW comenzó en 1976
cuando los obispos de los EE. UU. designaron el 28º
domingo del año para la NVAW. En 1997, esta celebración
se movió para coincidir con la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor,
que se celebra el 13 de enero de 2013. A partir de 2014, la
NVAW se trasladó a la primera semana completa de

San Martin de Porres (1579-1639) This weekend, our Peruvian community
celebrates the feast of one of the saints of Peru –
Saint Martin de Porres. Martin’s father was a
Spanish nobleman. His mother was of African
descent. His father abandoned his family; thus
Martin, his mother and sister lived in poverty. At
the age of
12 Martin was apprenticed to a local barber. He learned to cut
hair and basic first aid. At the age of 15 he became a lay
brother in the Dominican community in Lima. He was given
the jobs no one else wanted. Some of the friars thought that
Martin should not be a member of the community because of
his race. Martin extended his ministry beyond the needs of the
Dominican friars to help the poor of Lima. He fed the hungry
with the monastery leftovers, housed the homeless in the empty
rooms of the monastery, opened a home for abandoned
children, taught people to farm so they could make a life for
themselves. Martin is also the patron of interracial justice.
SAN MARTÍN DE PORRES (1579 –1639)
Este fin de semana, nuestra Comunidad Peruana celebra la fiesta
de uno de los santos del Perú –San Martín de Porres. El padre
de Martín perteneció a la nobleza española. Su madre fue una
descendiente de Africanos. Su padre abandono a su familia, por
lo que Martín, su madre y su hermana vivieron pobremente. A
la edad de 12 años, Martín era aprendiz de una barbería local.
Aquí aprendió a cortar cabello y lo básico de primeros auxilios.
A la edad de 15 años se convirtió en un hermano laico de los
Dominicos en Lima. Aquí le dieron los trabajos que nadie
quería hacer. Algunos de los frailes pensaron que Martín no
debía ser miembro de la comunidad debido a su raza. Martín
fue mas allá en su ministerio con los frailes Dominicos para
ayudar a los pobres de Lima. Él le dio de comer al hambriento
con lo que sobraba en el monasterio, amparó a los que no tenían
casa en los cuartos vacios en el monasterio, abrió un hogar para
niños abandonados, enseño a los campesinos para que pudieran
ganarse la vida por ellos mismos. Martín es también el patrón
de la justicia interracial.

THE CRISIS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
Articles about the sexual abuse crisis in the church
continue to make the news. The Federal Government is
undertaking an investigation in dioceses of several states.
“60 Minutes” aired a story about Sexual Abuse in the
Diocese of Buffalo, New York. We have not written or
spoken much about this crisis in the church since the
publication of the Grand Jury report of several of the
dioceses in Pennsylvania.
What are you thinking and how do you feel when you
hear these stories? What questions might you have? The
stories may be about the church in other parts of the
country or from years past but do they raise questions or
concerns for you?
Our primary focus must be the care, healing and
counseling for victims. Even if the abuse happened years
ago, when the victims were children or teenagers, the
trauma and hurt continue to affect their lives.
There is again a call for greater transparency and
accountability of all church leaders, including bishops.
The issue of sexual abuse of minors is extremely
serious. It is a crime and a failure in moral leadership
across the Church. As Cardinal Seán stated in August
2018, “The Church must embrace spiritual conversion
and demand legal transparency and pastoral
accountability for all who carry out its mission. This
transformation is not easily achieved, but in all aspects it
is imperative. The way we prepare priests, the way we
exercise pastoral leadership and the way we cooperate
with civil authorities; all these have to be consistently
better than has been the case.”
Although most of the stories focus on the United States
this is not solely a problem of the church of the United
States. People throughout the world are now aware of this
reality. Though the focus of the news stories is the
Catholic Church we need to be aware that abuse of minors
can occur in all professions, including in families.
At Saint Mary of the Assumption all clergy, staff,
volunteers, ministers and anyone involved in service to
children and the elderly are required to complete a CORI
form (Criminal Offense Record Investigation) each year.
Everyone receives the diocesan policies and Protecting
God’s Children Training.
This issue will be a major topic at the meeting of United
States Bishops in November and in February, 2019 the
bishops will meet with Pope Francis to discuss this
concern, prevention and accountability.
LA CRISIS DEL ABUSO SEXUAL
Las historias sobre la crisis del abuso sexual en la iglesia
siguen apareciendo en las noticias. El gobierno federal está
llevando a cabo una investigación en las diócesis de varios
estados. "60 minutos" transmitió una historia sobre el abuso
sexual en la Diócesis de Buffalo, Nueva York. No hemos
escrito ni hablado mucho sobre esta crisis desde la
publicación del informe del Gran Jurado de varias de las
diócesis en Pennsylvania.
Qué piensan y cómo se sienten cuando oyen estas historias?

debemos ser conscientes de que el abuso de menores pueda

En Santa María de la Asunción, todos los miembros del
clero, el personal, los voluntarios, los ministros y cualquier
persona involucrada en el servicio a los niños y ancianos
deben completar un formulario CORI (Criminal Offense

Help with Your Heating Bill!
The Greater Lawrence Community Action Council
(GLCAC) has started to accept application for fuel
assistance. Funding is available through the Low Income
Home Energy Assistance Program to help pay a portion of
winter heating bills for low income residents in the
Merrimack Valley.
Eligibility is based on household size and gross annual
income of every household member age 18 or older.
New applicants must apply in person at the GLCAC/
LIHEAP office. Appointments may be made by phone
978-681-4950 or online at http://www.glcac.org under the
LIHEAP program
Previous applicants will receive an application and
instructions in the mail.
Applications will be accepted from November 1 to April 30

English As A Second Language
Northern Essex Community College is offering a Program for people who studied in college or have a degree from a college in another country and are limited in their English speaking skills. Representatives from Northern Essex Community College will be at Saint Mary’s on Monday, November 5th at 6:30 P.M. They will meet with parishioners to convalidate degree credits, discuss possibility for continuing education and also offer a 12 week Intensive English as a Second Language program. Northern Essex also offers other programs in English as a Second Language.
If you are interested please come TOMORROW - Monday at 6:30 P.M. to the Saint Augustine Room in the Parish Office.
