The second reading described Scripture as being for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteous-ness (2 Timothy 3:16). In Christian tra-dition, Holy Scripture is another word for Bible. The word “bible” is an English translation of the Latin word biblia (books), the plural form of the Greek word biblos, which means “a book.” The Bible as we have it today is a collection

of different books that have been put together as one book. It is made up of different books of the Old and the New Testaments. The Old Testament, the Jewish Scripture, is about the Promise. The New Testament is about the Fulfil-ment of that Promise, Christ Jesus. Since the Old Testa-ment points to the New, and the New Testament is about Jesus Christ, we could say that all Sacred Scripture is but one book, and that one book is Christ. The Bible teaches the revealed truths about God and about our salvation. By the power of the Holy Spirit, God the Father enlightened the writers of the books to the truths he wanted communicated. According to the Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Ver-bum), “to compose the sacred books, God chose certain men who, all the while he employed them in this task, made full use of their own faculties and powers so that, though he acted in them and by them, it was as true au-thors that they consigned to writing whatever he wanted written, and no more” (#11). The Bible is both the word of God and man. God enabled human beings to use their ex-periences to write about His truth. The Bible tells of the story of our salvation. This story is told by different au-thors and addressed to different people in varied circum-stances. The Church today encourages the faithful to have a deep love for the Scriptures. She says with St. Jerome that to be ignorant of the Scriptures is to be ignorant of Christ. For us to grow in holiness and righteousness, we need the ex-amples of those who have gone before us. As we read the Bible, we become aware that Christianity is not just a reli-gion of the book but also a religion of the “Word” of God, which is alive and active. Thus, the study of the Scriptures draws us into action for God. Here at St. Mary Magdalene, the Adult Faith Formation ministry has bible study ses-sions on Thursday mornings at 9:30am and in the evening at 7pm. Please join the group. There was a time when peo-ple had excuses not to read the Bible because they could not understand the language in which it was written. The Bible is available today in most languages spoken around

the world! There are many translations and versions of the Bible in English. I recommend the Catholic editions to any Catholic who wants to read the Bible. When we read the Bible, God speaks to us. We are called to also speak to God. It is therefore important to not just read the Bible as one reads a novel but rather to reflect on what one is reading and let God speak through His Word. In interpreting the sacred scriptures, the Second Vatican Council document, Dei Verbum, reminds us: “Since God speaks in Sacred Scripture through men in human fash-ion, the interpreter of Sacred Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers real-ly intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words” (#12). We cannot interpret passages of the Bible without considering the context in which the text was written. In the gospel today, Jesus told us to pray always without growing weary. I see prayer as a way of expressing our re-lationship with God and keeping in touch with him. We are not to grow weary when we pray. We also do not hide under the pretense of prayer and abandon the work we are supposed to do. In the first reading, while Moses was praying by raising up his hand to God, Joshua was in the battlefield engaging the Amalekite in battle. When he started feeling weak, Moses was helped by Aaron and Hur so that he kept on praying until the victory was won. Pray-er is not a one-time thing. We have to make it a habit to pray and persist in our prayer. A reminder that our Fall Festival is next Sunday, October 23rd. This is an event for the whole family that begins at Noon and lasts until 6pm. Due to the festival, there will be no 5pm evening Mass next Sunday. I am grateful to all our booth and event coordinators and the festival planners. Thank you to those parishioners who have signed up to volunteer for various games and booths. We still need more volunteers, so please sign up after Mass today. The raffle tickets, t-shirts, polo shirts, etc. are still on sale. This event requires the participation of all parishioners. There is going to be a lot of food, drinks, music and games. In fact, we will have the kick-off dinner on Saturday at 6:30pm. Invite your friends to the dinner and also to the festival on Sunday. I look forward to all the fun next Sun-day. See you there! Have a blessed week!

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Though Jesus told today’s parable more than two thousand years ago, human nature hasn’t changed: we recognize both charac-ters instantly. The merciless judge represents the corruption that has short-circuited justice throughout history; the distraught widow, society’s perennially powerless, marginalized to what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries” by those who wield power but lack the mercy that could transfigure society with compassion. To confront such reality, Jesus bids us, “Pray always without be-coming weary” (Luke 18:1). Prayer opens our eyes to see others from Jesus’s perspective and leads us to work for justice by com-ing to the aid of others with what Pope Francis extols as a higher standard: mercy. Thus, when Jesus asks, “Will not God secure the rights of [God’s] chosen ones? Will [God] be slow to answer?” (18:7), we respond by making God’s liberating work for others our own. “[W]hen the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (18:8). Yes, we respond—and mercy!

The Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Com-munion (EMHC) assist the presider in distrib-uting Holy Communion during Eucharistic celebrations. The Eucharist is the heart of

our religion, and it is truly an honor and priv-ilege to distribute Holy Communion to our

parishioners and guests. EMHCs are fully ini-tiated Catholic laypersons who have dis-

cerned their calling to this ministry and have completed EMHC training. EMHCs

may also serve in the Hospital, Nursing Home and Homebound Ministries with

additional training.

If you have any questions or would like to join, members of this ministry will be availa-ble after all Masses this weekend, October 15 & 16. You can also contact Freda Monk at (281) 852-7257 or [email protected].

Go on a “Field Trip” ADULT FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS AND EVANGELIZATION

Ivana T. Meshell, M.A., Director, [email protected]

Once in a while, each of us needs to go on a “field trip” in order to live a more deliberate life, discovering who we are becoming and what we were meant to become. Here are just three options:

BEHOLD: A RETREAT WITH OUR LADY—MOTHER, INTERCESSOR & DISCIPLE The theme for this year’s weekend retreats at Holy Name Retreat Center, Houston, focuses on Mary, the Mother of God as “the one who knows the way.” As each of us seeks “the way” in our lives, a retreat at Holy Name is a fulfilling, ener-gizing experience. Learn more about Catholic retreats at www.holynameretreatcenter.com and also the Cenacle Retreat House: www.cenacleretreathouse.org and click on “retreats and programs.”

PERSONAL, PRACTICAL, ENGAGING BIBLE STUDY! People are desiring a better way to live their lives. Are you one of them? The Walking Toward Eternity series is teaching adults not just theory, but how to live the Word of God in everyday life. Journals are available, and you may join us now on Thursday mornings at 9:30 am OR on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm. Contact Ivana [email protected] for details.

THE FOUR SIGNS OF A DYNAMIC CATHOLIC IS COMING TO HOUSTON! Presented by Dr. Allen Hunt and based on Matthew Kelly's best-selling book, The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic, The Four Signs event delves into the four life-giving spiritual habits of engaged Catholics. What if every Catholic prayed for ten minutes and read five pages of a great Catholic book each day? What if every Catholic gave one percent more of their income to their Church this year and did one thing each week to intentionally share God's message with others? The Catholic Church would be staggeringly different from the Church today. How do we take on these life-changing hab-its? Join us for this Four Signs event and discover how to master the four signs of a Dynamic Catholic in your life. You will also learn how to help your parish apply the four signs in order to engage disengaged Catholics—perhaps members of your own family.

The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic — Friday, November 18, 2016 7:00-10:45 pm; St. Jerome Catholic Church, 8825 Kempwood, Houston Texas. St. Jerome is off the Katy Freeway in the Spring Branch area. For more information and to register: www.cart.dynamiccatholic.com, click on “Events.” P. 11

Sacrament Prep: Our first Reconciliation meeting is tomorrow, Monday, October 17, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Children should be brought to the Education Building. English-speaking parents, please come to the church; those who are more comfortable hearing this presentation in Spanish, please come to the

NO CCE on Sunday, October 23: Come and enjoy our parish’s Fall Festival on Sunday, October 23. There will be no CCE classes on that day; however, our Tuesday and Wednesday classes WILL meet.

Shed the Light of God Abroad: By sharing your faith with our students, you shed the light of God abroad in their hearts as you help them to understand Catholic teaching. No formal teaching experience is required to be a catechist, although professional teachers are welcome. Please contact Mike or Ginger for information about serving as a cate-chist.

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I: Exodus 17:8-13

God is with us, even when the going is tough. The Israelites had recently left Egypt and were on the way to Sinai through the desert wilderness. One of the difficulties they encountered was conflict with the Amalekites, a nomadic people who warred against anyone who encroached on their territory. As long as Moses prayed, Israel won the battle. With the help of the com-munity, Moses was able to persevere in prayer.

Reading II: 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2 Be faithful to what you have learned. The reading from the Sec-ond Letter of Paul to Timothy confirms Timothy's commis-sion to leadership in the Church. The responsibilities are wide-ranging, and Timothy is warned of the difficulties of this job. Timothy's greatest hardship is dealing with the opponents who are seen as rejecting all law and order in the Church while others seem to be set on binding the Church with rigorous laws and practices.

Gospel: Luke 18:1-8 Pray always, and never lose heart. The point of today's parable is perseverance in prayer. The story is aimed to bring comfort to the disciples as they await the coming of the Son of Man. The final sentence connects the delay of an answer to prayer to the delay of the coming of the Son of Man. Only those who con-tinue to have faith will be able to persevere to the end.

How About a “Field Trip?” Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation Remember when we were kids and we always looked forward to a “field trip?” Back before we had micro-waves and other conveniences, my mom would let me pick out my favorite snacks for my extra-special brown bag lunch. I always picked Cracker Jacks because back in the 1970s, they had really good prizes in-side the Cracker Jacks boxes, and I liked the crunchy way they tasted. She would wrap a can of Coke in alu-minum foil and freeze it overnight so that the ice would melt the next morning, and I would have ice-cold so-da by lunchtime. As children, little things would fascinate and please us. Now I don’t drink soda at all, even though I can have one whenever I want. My life is full of activities and full of choices—have this, don’t have this; do this, don’t do this. I realize as I am getting a little older that I only have so much time left to make good choices, even if I am blessed with a typical life expectancy; and besides that, I have far more to choose from than I once did. Like others in our society, I am surrounded by mes-sages and options—so many that they are mind-numbing at times. I don’t want my life to be made up of things that more or less just happened to me as I passively allow the world to bombard me with what-ever gets thrown my way. I want to live a deliberate life. I want to choose God and the things of God. I want to be a dynamic Catholic. As students, why did we go on field trips? Because it opened up a world beyond our familiar, comfortable classroom; because it allowed us to have hands-on experience with something that was in the curriculum but could not be as effectively learned in books; because the experience inspired us to dream of what was possible and set our young minds on greater, higher things. So it is with adults. Sometimes we need to take ourselves on a “field trip” and explore more deeply what it means to be Catholic via experiences we cannot get in any other way. It might be something as simple as taking a walk and giving yourself time to conscious-ly observe the world beyond your front door, taking the time to reflect on godly things. For my husband, it’s quietly sitting in a hunting blind this time of year, with lots of time to be in God and nature. Many of us are currently participating in the Walking Toward Eternity Bible Study, which is taking us away from the ordinary and leading us on a spiritual path toward conversion and inner peace. In doing this along with other parish-ioners, I am finding that God is speaking to me in his Word, and I know what I have to do in order to do his will and have the freedom that is promised to the Children of God. Now I just have to pray for the courage to do it. This week, ask yourself (with me): Am I leading a deliberate life, or am I simply floating wherever the boat takes me? Am I making choices that shape who I am becoming, or am I as a feather on a breeze (as in For-rest Gump)? Is there something I can do to actively seek out the betterment of myself and those around me? The Church of our archdiocese presents us with many opportunities for workshops, retreats, prayer groups and other events designed to take us “out in the field” of Catholic Christian living, perhaps in ways we have not quite experienced before. Sometimes we need to break out of our familiar world, if only for a little while, and set our minds on greater, higher things—just like we did when we were kids on a field trip. As a child, I remember eating my brown paper sack lunch with my friends, coming back on the bus, and what it was like to return energized and renewed. As I hurriedly walked home and turned up the sidewalk, I couldn’t wait to tell my mom what all had happened—what I saw and did. When was the last time you were that excited about your faith? Friends, we need to give ourselves opportunities to discover something beyond our present familiar world and circumstances. This is how we grow. Please consider what a “field trip” might be for you. Ask members of your family to support you and give you the time and freedom to do a weekend retreat, a bible study, or some other form of renewal. You will return to them and to others around you as a better person. For more information on what you can do, write me at [email protected].
