St. Martin’s Monthly April 2018 Volume 13 Issue 4 Serving the community in the name of Christ since 1942 Dear Friends, The Vestry recently participated in a weekend retreat. It was the best one I’ve been a part of. In large part the difference was holding a two night retreat instead of a one night event. It may be a subtle difference, but those few extra hours change the dynamic of presence. By committing that extra bit of time, we were able to be fully present for all of our work without giving in to the natural tendency to start thinking about the trip home. Another important event was our worship together at Grace Church, St. Francisville for the 7:30 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday morning. With that we began the voyage home but not before we shared and planned hopes and dreams for our church and built trust with one another. We will soon commission the following Vestry members: Penny Salvaggio, Sr. Warden Don DeBarbieris, Jr. Warden Carolyn Hennesy, Chancellor Kyle Sclafani, Secretary Donald Alphonso Rene Edmon Frances Truett Steven Graf Rebecca Sadler Our Treasurer is George Allen. Canons allow the Vestry to elect the treasurer from the congrega- tion. The Vestry will also be presenting ideas and information to the church on a regular basis, perhaps quarterly. Your Vestry is here to serve you and I hope you will engage them in conversation and support of our shared work here at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. See you in church,

Serving the community in the name of Christ since 1942

Dear Friends, The Vestry recently participated in a weekend retreat. We will soon commission the following Vestry members:

Penny Salvaggio, Sr. Warden Don DeBarbieris, Jr. Warden Carolyn Hennesy, Chancellor

Kyle Sclafani, Secretary Donald Alphonso

Rene Edmon Frances Truett

Steven Graf Rebecca Sadler

Our Treasurer is George Allen. Canons allow the Vestry to elect the treasurer from the congrega-tion. The Vestry will also be presenting ideas and information to the church on a regular basis, perhaps quarterly. Your Vestry is here to serve you and I hope you will engage them in conversation and support of our shared work here at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. See you in church,

St. Martin’s Episcopal Church* is participating in Give NOLA Day this year!

Give NOLA Day is a one day online giving campaign, sponsored by The Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF).

Give NOLA Day is May 1, midnight to midnight.

Giving on May 1, at www.GiveNOLA.org, stretches your donation and enters us in hourly monetary prize drawings.

Stretch your donation through the GNOF Lagniappe Fund—at the end of Give NOLA Day, we will receive a proportional share of this fund based upon our per-centage of the total dollars raised. So the amount we raise is divided by the amount raised by all on May 1 is our lagniappe fund percentage.

Hourly monetary prizes through “Rock Around the Clock” Drawings- $1000 each hour is given to a random nonprofit from a listing of all nonprofits who re-ceive a donation of any amount within that hour. Even giving the minimum do-nation of $10 enters us into the “Rock Around the Clock” drawing.

Become a St. Martin’s Champion for Give NOLA Day! It’s easy!

Invite your friends on social media to make a donation on Give NOLA Day.

*Donations made through Give NOLA Day are tax deductible and a receipt will be emailed to you for tax purposes from the Greater New Orleans Foundation, overseer of Give NOLA Day. These donations cannot be counted towards your St. Martin’s Episcopal Church pledge.

St. Julia’s Guild is open to all women of the parish. We hope to bring pray-

er concerns, have wonderful fellowship, and get to know each other in a casual setting. The next meeting is Friday, April 13 at noon in Gayle Hall. Dessert and beverages are provided. Please bring your own lunch.

Rector’s Bible Study Rector’s Bible Study meets each Monday from 2-3 p.m. in Gayle Hall. Bring your Bible or use one that we have on hand. We work our way through books of the Bible, one at a time. We read the passages aloud. Fr. Devall then offers teaching on the mean-ing of the passage and frequently someone asks a great question that leads to an inter-esting discussion.

Read the Bible in 1 year

We will meet each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in Gayle Hall for a twenty minute check in about the previous week’s readings. All are welcome.

Patrick’s Parade Party: Actions Undertaken by the “Christian Re-

sponse to Louisiana Environmental Issues” Class

This group is busy learn-ing about how to care for our immediate environ-ment like providing a bin to recycle Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s parade beads and setting up stations for recycling at the St. Pat-rick’s Parade Party. They are also looking at other impacts and strategies to help the envi-ronment through St. Martin’s. All are invited to the next meeting on Monday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. in Gayle Hall to hear guest speaker, Helen Rose Patterson, of the Restore the Mississippi River Delta Coalition.

Resumes April 11

Pray, Eat, Learn group will read Telling Secrets, by Frederick Buechner. With eloquence, candor, and simplicity, Buechner, a celebrated author tells the story of his father's alcohol abuse and suicide and traces the influence of this secret on his life as a son, fa-ther, husband, min-ister, and writer. Over three weeks (April 11, 18, and 25) we will read and discuss. Pray, Eat, Learn will resume in Septem-ber.

How might your faith and the faith of others be deepened by the experience? Questions like these, along with more practical matters of cost, dates, activities, etc. will all be addressed at an informational meeting at St. Au-gustine's Episcopal Church, Metairie, on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:00 p.m. in Byrd Hall. The dates of this year's trip to Church of the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and School are tentatively set for June 11th-18th. Easter was a beautiful day at St. Martin’s. The children enjoyed flowering the cross at the 10:00 a.m. service. This was fol-lowed by the potluck with 11 parishioners and friends of parishioners partaking is a wonderfully prepared Easter dinner. Fr. Fred celebrated with the 2 year old Lit-tle School class Easter egg hunt. Also pic-tured are teachers Miss Tricia and Miss Vanessa.

The mission of the Episcopal Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other through Christ.

At St. Martin’s that mission is expressed through our four guiding principles:

Worship, Stewardship, Community, and Outreach.

The first service of the congregation that would become St. Mar-tin’s Episcopal Church was held at Metairie High School (now

Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies) on the Day of Pentecost, May 31, 1942. We still have the same mission of inviting others

into our community of faith.

We hope that you will further your participation and development in the faith, and to encourage others to join as we seek to follow

Christ and reach out to others in his name.

Thank you for being a part of our common life in this place.
