MY DEAR FRIENDS,

LAST SUNDAY, WE, THE ST. MARTHA’S FAITH FAMILY, celebrated Our Lord Jesus Christ's triumphant Resurrection from the dead. Thank you for your participation in the Liturgies of Holy Week and the Lenten Masses! We clergy and minister s were touched by your faith and devotion! Thank you also for your generous donations to the poor, to the Holy Land Franciscans and to our parish.

In particular, I would like to thank all the priests for their dedication and endless hours in the confessional and on the altar. Also, all our dedicated deacons for their liturgical support. I wish to thank the heads of the different parish ministries and their members: our music director with the beautiful choir, instrumentalists and cantors; our Eucharistic Ministers, lectors, altar servers, ushers, greeters, our sacristans and the Altar Society members, who did such a beautiful job in preparing the church and arranging the flowers on the sanctuary; and finally, the Maintenance Department, who kept the church clean, and the grounds and tomb immaculate.

The meaning of Jesus’ Resurrection is the assurance of LIFE ETERNAL for all of us, the believers! If we pick up our cross daily and follow the good Lord with love, sacrifice and prayer, then we will live with Jesus ETERNALLY in PARADISE, first, with our soul, and after the second coming and the final judgment, with our risen and transformed body! Alleluia!

All of us, dear friends, will pick up our bodies from the ashes and dust to which they were reduced, and we will assume our incorruptible and immortal soul and body, and live forever like angels! Let us live in Jesus now, so that we will live forever in Him in Paradise! Right now we, the Catholic faithful, are proclaiming Jesus’ second coming every day at Mass: “We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection, until you come again!” A billion strong religious people, we Catholics have influenced world history more than any other nation, kingdom or religion.

TODAY’S GOSPEL HAS DONE MORE FOR OUR PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION than any other and, paradoxically, it does it through the lack of faith of Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles, who very crudely said: “I’ll never believe the risen Jesus unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger in the nail marks and my fist into His side.” The ancient followers of Christ were not easy to deceive, as shown by Thomas, and the ladies who went to the empty tomb with Peter and John: if they had faith in Jesus’ prophecy of the resurrection, why go to check it out? It is instructive to know that only Mary, the Mother of Jesus, did not go to the tomb; she knew, she believed!

THE CONGREGATION FOR DIVINE WORSHIP DECREED, on May 23, 2000, that “Throughout the world, the First Sunday after Easter will receive the

name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face with confidence, in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that humankind will experience in the years to come.” Devotion to the

Divine Mercy was promoted by St. Faustina Kowalska, canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000. Jesus said to Faustina: “I want this image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy. On that day, the depths of My Mercy will be open to all. Whoever will go to confession and Holy Communion on that day will receive complete forgiveness of sin and punishment. Mankind will not enjoy peace until it turns with confidence to My Mercy.” How

important this message is during this Jubilee Year of Mercy! The most common prayer of Divine Mercy is the famous Divine Mercy Chaplet. Other novenas are: Miraculous Medal, St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Vincent Pallotti and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Divine Mercy Sunday Holy Hour at St. Martha’s will be TODAY at 2:30 p.m. in the Church, with selected readings, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction.

DON’T FORGET THAT SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2:30 PM, THE DIOCESE OF VENICE will join with our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community to recognize “Yom Hashoah” at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. This annual diocesan Yom Hashoah will bring together members of the Jewish and Christian communities, as encouraged by the Holy Father, to remember the victims of hate, and to help build a climate of respect where tragedies occur and may never again be possible. The guest speaker will be Father Patrick Ryan, S.J., of Fordham University. It is a beautiful and impactful remembrance not to be missed. A reception will follow in the Cathedral parish hall.

It does seem to me that the devil has employed every means of destruction and horror against the chosen people of God; from the expulsion from Rome of all Jews (Rabbinical and Christian) in the year 49 A.D. by the Emperor Claudius, to the Holocaust by the German Nazis, and from the terrorist attacks on Israel, to the anti-Semitism of fundamentalist Moslems today.

The same hatred by Satan and his disciples has followed us Christians (the new Israel) throughout the centuries, because of our Jewish Scriptures and origins: “Salvation after all is from the Jews,” St. Paul wrote! To be anti-Semitic is to be against Jesus and Mary - - the most famous Jewish woman, actually the most venerated woman on earth - - and all the first Christian Martyrs! Let us ponder the prayer that, in the solemn Liturgy of Jesus’ death on Good Friday, the Catholic faithful implore God: “Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of His name and in faithfulness to His covenant: Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity.

Year of Mercy: December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016

The work of mercy that we can exercise this Easter is a simple one: Comfort the afflicted. It is simple because so many people are afflicted in so many ways. With deep faith in the Resurrection and in the

grace of the Risen Christ, we bring comfort to those afflicted, emotionally, physically, spiritually, economically. One thing is needed, though, for this simple Easter task. As Pope Francis preached at last year’s Easter Vigil: “To enter into the mystery means going beyond our own comfort zone, beyond the laziness and indifference which hold us back, and going out in search of truth, beauty and love.” To offer others comfort we sometimes have to leave our own behind. - Father James M. Sullivan, O.P.

The Annunciation (celebrated this Monday) marks the moment when God Himself began redeeming the unborn child -- and all of us who once were unborn children -- by becoming one Himself. Never can the unborn be

considered too small to be significant or to possess rights, because God Himself was that small.

A SPECIAL DAY OF MERCY

This Sunday, the Sunday of Divine Mercy, was officially designated by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000 at the Canoniza-tion of St. Faustina Kowalska. This is a very special Sunday when Jesus through the Church offers forgiveness of all sins and punishment to those who have gone to confession and receive the Eucharist on this holy day.

It was just a little more than a year ago that Pope Francis announced his intent for the Jubilee Year of Mer-cy with these words: “It’s a journey that starts with a spir-itual conversion. For this reason I have decided to declare an Extraordinary Jubilee that has the mercy of God at its center. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy. The official an-nouncement of the Year of Mercy occurred on this Divine Mercy Sunday last year.

From the beginning of his time as our Pope, our Holy Father Francis has had “mercy” as an ongoing theme. This Year of Mercy is directed at each of us as members of the Church, but also to everyone in the world. We are called to look into our own hearts and recognize the need for God’s mercy. Today should be a day of jubilation that God’s mercy is so free and open to us. Mercy, you see, is not earned. It is given unreservedly.
